Almost an entire family history, and a tribute to a flawed but wonderful father, all in one incredible song

Attended Martin’s masterclass last weekend in Sheffield. It was Remembrance Sunday and he paused the masterclass and played this for all who have served and who are serving. His soul is as huge as his talent.

Thanks for uploading. One of my favourite songs.Wish I could work out the guitar tabs for this. Difficult, cos Martin Simpson does not use simple chord progressions! As a Sheffielder, have had the privilege of seeing him live and hope to do so again soon .

Simpson is known more as an interpreter of others' songs than as a songwriter, but this song just blows me away. At least as good as anything Dylan ever wrote in my opinion, but with much much much better singing and picking !

This is in another league entirely from Dylan.

The fact that you even have to mention Dylan shows how much better he is than Martin Simpson. You could trawl through hundreds of Dylan videos on here and and no point would someone say "I'd say this guy is even better than Martin Simpson".
It is a great song though either way.

Curious about this too. I have this on the 'That's proper folk' CD and I thought it sounded like Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, but looking at this clip it obviously isn't...
