  • June 2020 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the release of “Rainbow”, The Marmalade’s tenth single release, sixth UK hit, and follow up to "Reflections Of My Life” ……
Some info on the actual recording session and how the single came about … also Dean’s vocal, solo'd and the harmonies solo’d also… "barber shop style".
Huge hit over the summer of 1970 with blanket airplay
Written by Junior Campbell & Dean Ford (Campbell&McAleese)
Film intro recorded 19 June 2020 with "dodgy voice" (summer cold)
    Rainbow
Look me up, look me down
    Rainbow
You were fun to have around
    I was dreamin'
Of the love I had to share
    Never thinkin'
You were here, you were there
Not a word, not a sound
Couldn't see or even feel the ground
A pot of gold, I was sold
By the way you let it fly
    Rainbow
Look me up, look me down
    Rainbow
You were fun to have around
    I was dreamin'
Of the love I had to share
    Never thinkin'
You were here, you were there
    Rainbow
Look me up, look me down
    Rainbow
You were fun to have around
    Now I'm changing
For the better, for the day
    Feel like singing
    All the colors you convey
Come on home, keep me warm
And love me till the new days born
And I pray, you will stay
    For ever in my eyes

When the record peaked at #3 in August ‘70 in UK, this was the official chart, as you can see in the video .... quite surreal to look back at some of the classics listed .... only Elvis and 10cc above us .....
1 The Wonder Of You - Elvis Presley
2 Neanderthal Man. Hot legs (10cc)
    3 Rainbow. The Marmalade
    4 Lola. The Kinks
5 Tears Of A Clown. Smokey Robinson and The Miracles
    6 Something. Shirley Bassey
7 The Love You Save. Jackson 5
    8 Natural Sinner. Fair Weather
9 In The Summer Time. Mungo Jerry
10 I’ll Say Forever My Love Jimmy Ruffin
11 Big Yellow Taxi Joni Mithchell
    12 Alright Now. Free
13 Love Like A Man. 10 Years After
    14 25 Or 6 To 4 Chicago
15 Sweet Inspiration Johnny Johnson and The Bandwagon
16 Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours Stevie Wonder
    17 Lady D’Arbanville Cat Stevens

Hi Junior, I’m Graham’s daughter, Sarah. Thank you for posting this, I get so overwhelmed to see things like this of dad. I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve sent him a screen recording of your video, I can imagine he wouldn’t know how to use CZcams! 😂 I’ve heard many stories from dad about the times with the band and he always speaks so fondly of you. Cracking video, it means the world to me to see things like this. Take care 😊♥️

I listen to your albums most days as of course i am a big fan still. Your harmonies were actually so spot on it was breath taking to listen to you and still is. Your music lives on. Eu já tenho 71 anos. Sempre gostei do Marmalade.

A song as good as that will always stand the test of time. By the way Junior i loved your 2 top 20 hits, Hallelujah freedom and Sweet illusion the latter being one of my all time favourite songs ever, your vocal on that was so powerful. They don't make bands like Marmalade anymore, more's the pity.

I have the 45 of this song on an original Canadian pressing on the London label. It is a treasure. I also had Reflections Of My Life but sadly, I sold it to a record collector. I kick myself every time I think about that. I had around 100 other 45s that share the same story so my rear end is getting sore. Very nice upload; thank you.
BTW, I loved The Hollies too and one of my missing 100 is He Ain't Heavy. Of course, the collector wanted all the best that I had. I loved your harmonies too on both recordings. I must say that I didn't know any of your other stuff although, off the top of my head, I think I remember that you did Obla Di. Obla Da.

An extremely talented singer , songwriter, try and find the cd "Second time around" pure gold, so rare to find at the moment, if there is any justice, the record company should reissue this, let everyone out there see what real talent is.

BTW Junior, I still do Reflections at gigs and jam sessions.

Junior Campbell was an active friend here in Facebook land, but opted out a year or 2 back. His posts and reminiscing were always fascinating to a fan like me. The first part of the attached video is interesting to fans but the second part (the music) shows how brilliant Marmalade were in the studio at that time, with harmonies that would rival any of the highly regarded American bands like The Eagles, CSNY, Byrds, Quicksilver etc.

Big Pat Fairley lived up our street (Garlieston Road, Barlanark, Glasgow) He would regularly walk up the street in his floppy hat and fur coat. Everybody loved him! His poor mum was so embarrassed when the Sunday Paper printed the story of the Scandinavian girls! (Referenced in the outro of Radancer) She moved away, but I’m sure it was because Pat bought her a big house somewhere!

Such a wonderful & beautiful song that I only first heard this month. I was born in 1965 so a little too young to remember it; but I am currently with my friend Chris (b. 1946) to whom I am carer. Earlier this month there were some showers and sunshine and I mentioned there could be a Rainbow - and Chris immediately recalled this song - as he said, "Rainbow, Look me up, look me down" . It was very moving as he has memory problems - so I looked it up and instantly fell in love with the song and the original 1970 video - which we have listened to repeatedly . Deep gratitude to you Junior Campbell and posthumously , to Dean Ford - and to all the band. This record should have been No. 1. I love the beautiful dancer who moved so beautifully and surreally as the 'Rainbow". Do you recall her name - I wonder where she is now ? She too is a beautiful part of this wonderful musical creation. Thank you ! Kindest wishes to you ~ Stephen B. Whatley

@Stephen B Whatley Thank you Stephen, for your very generous and moving comments ... I am much aware of the power of music ... but have always been totally unaware when it's my own ... the girl in the video was arranged by the director and i recall she was a ballet dancer .... we never saw her again and didn't really speak to her during the shoot ... we never liked this video ... sort of entry level, even back in the day. Best wishes to you and Chris .. jNR

@@JuniorCampbellmusic Thanks so much for your kind and sensitive response. the song will always be in my heart, I love it - so thank you again. I think the film is surreally wonderful and unique. I'm naturally sad that you didn't know the lady but interested to hear she was a ballet dancer. Maybe, if she is still here, she will see these comments ! The song and film mean a lot to me personally too as the lady reminded me of my late beautiful young mother whom I tragically lost in 1981, when I was 16; her style . The wonders of recordings of capturing a time , making it stand still. I hope you are keeping well, Junior. Take care and keep writing music. As a painter myself , our arts help us through these times.

we had to knock out a very quick flip side for Rainbow ... wrote this with Dean, very quickly, then hit Decca studio three one Sunday morning ... just me, Dean and Graham chirping 'round one microphone, plus Dean's moothie, and me on geetar .... very similar, same key, as the A side ... one of my alltime fave's from the band .... "The Ballad Of Cherry Flavar" ... see if you can spot the nick from the Everly's "No One Can Make My Sunshine Smile" ... czcams.com/video/ew-ycjKFHIY/video.html

Sometimes spontaneity really pays off. Marmalade released some really high quality self-penned B-Sides that have been lost to time. "Cherry Flavor" is definitely one of them. Music that will hopefully be remembered a century later. Thanks for sharing, Junior.
