Dean Ford & The Gaylords - “Twenty Miles” Columbia DB 7264.
Dean Ford & The Gaylords - “Twenty Miles” Columbia DB 7264.
Released 1964
I was still 16 years old when this was recorded and released ….
Some history …
First ever recorded release … would you believe over 60 friggin years ago in 1964 …
‘meant to post a few months back but totally forgot about it ….
The legendary Norrie Paramor, producer of Cliff & The Shads, Frank Ifield, Helen Shapiro, Frankie Vaughan etc was persuaded by Gordon Reid, music journo from the Daily Record/Express, to come up to Glasgow to check out the “Scots Beat ”Scene” …. and thank god he did.
Very many Scots bands and artists (at least 20), including us, auditioned for Mr Paramor behind closed doors, daytime, over 2 days at the Locarno Ballroom on Sauchiehall St in early ’64 I think..
We were each granted 2 numbers and you got whirled around on the revolving stage to face Norrie, Gordon, and Billy Grainger ( Scotlands top promoter and coincidentally” our manager) sitting at a table AND an empty ballroom …. Terrifying ….
End product, Norrie chose The McKinley Sisters, Golden Crusaders - both from Edinburgh - and us, Glaswegians, to join EMI Columbia Records, provided we passed sound test recordings done in Biggar’s tiny basic Studio in Glasgow … which we all did.
We signed the traditional standard royalty contract, my dad sponsoring me because of my age, and both parties committed to record and release four singles … this was mammoth for us … and Scotland, and this one was our first.
The song had been a big US hit for Chubby Checker and we had seen Brian Poole & The Tremeloes perform the song at the Barrowland in Glasgow in ’63 … they had also recorded it for their Twist and Shout LP … so we fancied giving it a go for our first session ….
We drove overnight to London in our Commer van on the allocated date … we got 3 hours total to record and complete the A and B side at EMI Recording Studio 2 in Abbey Road … it wasn’t yet known as “Abbey Road” then.
Studio 2 was Mecca for us, particularly for me cause that’s where Apache, Wonderful Land, Kon Tiki, Atlantis, Shadoogie, and all the Shadows classics had been recorded .. with Norrie Paramor as producer and arranger, also Move It, The Young Ones and all others for Cliff.
(It was also the Fab 4’s base, the Hollies, Gerry & The P’s,Shirley Bassey, Cilla Black … you name them …).
Studio Control Room was up open stairs from the studio floor and we never got near it … don’t even know who the engineer was … a studio assistant told Raymie to set his kit in the drum booth and just move the existing one to the side which he did … he then appeared, ashen faced, pointing at the now coverless bass drum with the iconic "The Beatles" emblazed across the front 😎..
Norrie Paramor then came in, his frameless glasses reflecting the light … he was very nice and could tell we were all nervous … he explained the procedure and we went for it. We all gathered around the single huge cabinet speaker on the studio floor to hear the playback and were amazed to hear our ourselves, recorded properly and at EMI, for the very first time .. the tea lady even brought us in a fresh cup of tea poured from a big brown pot on her trolley and she gave us some hot rolls and some cheery cockney chat which we’d never heard before … very lovely.
Then came the B side .. a Derek Creigan song “What’s the Matter With Me” … nice little ditty of the day. We ran through once, then Mr Paramor reappeared, removing the cover from a keyboard instrument called a celeste … vivid memory of me standing by him … the great Norrie Paramor … him checking the chords with me before then laying the final master.
“Very good boys … Well done … Best of luck”
A staff photographer came in and took some smudges.. in case we got lucky … and that was it, straight back to Glasgow.
Twenty Miles did really well in Scotland, sales wise but zilch nationally … but it was the beginning and we had no idea where it would take us ..
Released April 1964

This one went so far under the radar it ended in the drink ! Written and recorded over 50 years ago and in truth, my youthful cheeky foray in having the audacity to try and arrange the track in the style of the great Paul Riser, the Tamla Motown genius who arranged almost all the classics on that label. I threw the kitchen sink at it in terms of orchestration, and Decca, (but ultimately me), we...

amazing!! one question... when was "just a little romance" recorded? judging by some of the instruments i could probably guess around 1986-1987, since the instrumentation sounds alot like the TUGS opening theme

This is a belter. I was two years old when it came out so discovered it retrospectively. This is confusing because I'm comparing it to stuff that wasn't around when it came out😂😂 I think it has got a bit of a disco vibe. The intro is a killer.

  • @HerFatherDidntLikeMe

I was three months old when this was broadcast. So, obviously, I don't remember it. I think "Reflections Of My Life" is a masterpiece. Great lyrics, melody, performance, and production. I was blown away to find this live version.

Sharp eye! Yes it is. That's a Fender Stratocaster six-string and the left handed guitarist is playing a right handed guitar. At 2:15 the bass strings are visible and are clearly on the bottom, they should be up - toward the ceiling. Also the knobs for adjusting the volume and tone are showing at the top of the body where the players hand/wrist might bump them. 😆
