A wander along the coast in Aberdeen - PART ONE: from Don to Dee...

  • Throughout history, the sea has shaped Aberdeen as a city. So join me on a wander along the coastline on this sunny spring morning. I'll be honest - camera problems mean this is just 'part one', but a 'part two' will be filmed soon I promise! We'll get all the way down to Cove Bay in the next one, but for now, let's stroll along the front from the River Don to the River Dee. We'll see beautiful sandy beaches, Aberdeen's football stadium, an old fishing village and the industrial harbour in the heart of the city. I'll also pop into the Maritime Museum just before my camera fails :O
    Filmed in Aberdeen Scotland on Sunday 6th March 2022.

    Really enjoyed the video of Aberdeen, having visited there (from NZ - sadly quite a few years ago now), hopefully next time Alicja will have time off to join you in a re-visit?. You noted the oil industry, which reminded me of the one place I wished I had seen in Aberdeen, and that was the memorial in Hazlehead Park to the 167 lives lost in the Piper Alpha tragedy, but from that tragedy, so much was learnt and so many lives are here today because of it, and being in the marine industry myself I wanted to pay my deep respects and quiet thanks to those who gave their all. Going south I followed the truly spectacular secondary coast roads (stopping at Stonehaven!) right through to Dundee and then onto St Andrews, Edinburgh and back to the Uncles in East Dunbartonshire. Scotland is just the best, and thank you Steve & Alicja for the wonderful "re-visits" from my easy chair 12,500 miles away!

    So happy to see this! We loved this coast line. We took the train from Aberdeen to Edinburgh in 2019 and it was one of my favourite train routes. The views along the water from the train were fantastic. Wish we had have been able to stay longer in Aberdeen and take in some of those trails. I have a great-great Grandfather that apparently lived in Aberdeen but only discovered the street he was on after we got home from our trip. Always the way, right? Anyway, we only had a one night stop and that was to do laundry of all things. Really enjoyed this walk and would love to see Part 2! ❤

    Another great video, Steve, looking forward to Part two.
    I agree with you about football stadia, The old ones seemed to have a more concentrated "atmosphere" than their superstadium replacements. That was certainly true of West Ham's old Boleyn Ground where I used to go with my mates, (firat match August Bank Holiday Monday 1962, when they beat the Spurs "double" side 2-1! ) We used to take a bus to Woolwich, cross on the ferry, or under the River in the spooky foot tunnel, to North Woolwich and another bus through the Royal Docks to East Ham Town Hall. I've not been to their new home at the London Stadium, the 2012 Olympicvenue. I also remember going to the old Stamford bridge before it was rebuilt, when it had a full size running track between the stands and the the pitch where, my Dad told me, he'd raced at athletics meetings before the War, My "local" stadium, The Valley at Charlton is estimated to have contained 80,000 for the "Who" concert there on 31st May 1976 - Charlton Athletic never got anything like that attendance for their home games! I also remember going to the "old" Wembley for a schoolboy football international before it was refurbished for the 1966 World Cup, and that too had huge spaces of open terracing. My parents told me that I was also taken there in a carry cot during the 1948 Olympics, but only a couple of months old, I probably slept through that.
    I wonder if Alicja ever went to the "Ten Year Stadium" on the east bank of the Vistula near the Poniatowski Bridge in Warsaw. It was a huge open concrete monolith which as well as political rallies, my wife told me used to host the finish of the stage into Warsaw of the cycling "Peace Race", Eastern Europe's equivalent to the Tour de France, and you could dine on a grounded airliner in the park outside.. After the "regime change", people from further East used to come there to sell things until it grew into the world's biggest boot sale where it was said, you could get anything you wanted, if you knew the right person to ask... It was swept away to be rebuilt as the National Football Stadium.
    The correct pronunciation of "Esplanade" is given as ESP+LUH+NAYD, but if you' want to seem posh you can say ESP+LAN+ARD.
    I first learnt that Aberdeen had the name "Granite City" from a big coloured children's book of steam railway pictures I had, which showed the "Granite City Express" leaving Aberdeen.

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  Před 2 lety

      Cheers Hugh, so a bit of a hammer are you? Doing well this season! I'll be sure to ask Alicja - she is back home in Poland just now, she went down to the railway station today in Katowice, but it is transformed to a refugee shelter just now, Poland really is right on the border of a major war, so sad and so much closer to home for her!

Walked about 'Fittie' and the esplanade more than a few times. Spend many happy hours in those old pubs. Now that I think my parents took me to that beach when I was a wain. Cold Cold Cold. Do a part 2 Steve. Aberdeen always has a tug for any football fans - Fergie, Archibald, Strachan etc. Amazing achievements to overthrow the Glasgow old firm for a while. Topical too, in that it's sad that Aberdeen's prosperity is threatened by a Scottish government who seem to despise the oil and gas industry at a time we have been shown as needing it so badly.....
