  • A review of Sigma's newest 50mm lens - the 50mm f/1.4 'Art'. How special really is this unusually expensive 50mm lens?

    Christopher, I like that CZcams channel you mentioned too, but I really don't understand where Kai is coming from, saying this lens is not bokehlicious. I consider it plain awesome (just like it predecessor's was), except of course in situations with extremely busy backgrounds, but that is common for EVERY lens.
    Great review - and great channel. I love to watch your unbiased reviews. Keep up the good work.

    Wow what a review! As of December 2020, this lens still has the No.1 best DXOMark for Canon 5D Mark IV of 39, second comes Zeiss Milvus 1.4 at 35! That is a clear 4 point lead in the front .. Wow! Can't say the same of other Sigma lenses but this 50mm seems like a catch in 2020 especially a good 2nd hand one for Canon DSLRs lovers.

    Dear Christopher, I just love your elegant and very useful reviews. I have been following them for some time now and I would like to ask a question about this great Sigma lens. Would you recommend this lens for shooting indoor sports? Would it be a fast lens for photographing high-speed movements, like the ones in Crossfit and weightlifting? I was considering Sigma 85mm but in my Canon 70D it could be a little bit tele for the environment of a Crossfit box.

    @markharris5771 Před 8 lety

    Hi Christopher, I have two questions please. The first is you said you had to alter the front focusing in your camera, does that mean it isn't compatible with the hub? Also, like yourself, I shoot both full frame and cropped sensor, do you think this lens will be good enough when used on the 7DII to make purchasing an 85mm for the 5DII redundant? I know the cropping in a camera isn't the same as a longer focal length but because of the distance I will have to zoom out with my legs in this case the case for a '1 lens 2 focal lengths' has slightly more validity. I've not used 'normal' focal lengths much before as most of my photography has been landscape and wildlife, but unfortunately due to deterioration in my health I've been driven more indoors. I'm also having a slight upturn in demand for corporate, commercial and family portraits albeit on very small scale as its all I can manage. Thank you in advance.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  Před 8 lety +2

      It should still be compatible with Sigma's hub. As for 50mm on APS-C or 85mm on full-frame - it's really up to you! It might be slightly better to have 85mm on full-frame - if it's the 85mm f/1.8 (or 100mm f/2) then you will get just a little more background separation, and the benefits of using a full-frame camera as well, of course

    Hi I have just bought the 35mm version , I'm thinking MAYBE to swap for the 50mm , would you say there is much difference in sharpness enough to swap or not ? , this was after watching your 10 sharpest lenses video , I know the 35mm was 7th and is a great lens and I do like the 35mm focal length ,also I'm thinking of getting the samyang 135mm f2 from that review as well although I do like the look of the canon version from flickr pics even though was rated lower from your video but will prob go for samyang for price and still looks very good ,I was torn between 135mm focal length and 85mm but after research I think I prefer the 135mm focal length ,which is great as is cheaper lol anyway , great videos , very helpful , thanks , p.s I may not get the 135 yet as have a 1ds mark II and prob need a canon 6d for higher iso ?

      @@christopherfrost Hi Christopher , thank you for the reply ,I think I will stick with the 35 as I have the canon 50mm 1.8 II I think my next lens will be the 135mm Samyang . I was just reading how good the canon ef 24-70mm f2.8L II is , and was thinking would it be worth but I would really like to stay with primes , I am just a hobby photographer only been doing 6 months but have learnt A LOT thanks to the internet and great videos like yours , I started with vintage lenses , like zeiss from prakticar cameras and also zeiss from medium format cameras adapted to my canon 1ds mark II (before 500d) trying to get best quality for low price ,anyway thanks for the reply , it seems every time I find a lens I find another one for more money , haha , I only started with £140 invested now I'm upto a £1000 but I have some good gear just trying to get a complete set I would be happy with and then take lots of photos I think the sigma 35 and the Samyang 135 will fill my needs,although I am slightly torn between 85mm Samyang and 135 but I think the quality of the 135 is better and I think I prefer that range , anyway sorry for the long message , thanks for your time thanks :-)

      If you need wide angle then 24-35 would be the perfect option really. The Sigma 24-35 is a big, heavy (but excellent) lens

      @zanzanzanzan Před 8 lety

      +tonizuz It depends on what you to shoot. I started out with a 600D and a 50mm f1.8. I switched to the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and was really glad I did -on APS-C 50 was too narrow for general use. If you want to go wider still and don't mind the size/price, the Sigma 18-35mm is crazy good but will dwarf your camera.

As I sometimes shoot some proms or weddings inside, this is a huge issue. Did you buy this lens? Are you happy with it in this manner? Thank you!

    So I have this lens for about a year and it truly delivers sharp images, absolutely the sharpest lens that I own. Though.. I am going to sell it. I came to discover that sharpness isn't everything and I noticed that it was kind of a drag taking it with me, the lens is too heavy and bulky.. I didn't shot as much pictures with it as I wanted because of the weight. Now I would be all over this lens if it came in a lighter form factor but that would probably be physically impossible to achieve for a manufacturer.

    I bought and used 3 of them back in the day but all sent them back. They were all over the place with focusing. Couldn't get the calibration right either because it had massive front focus at random times... when it nails AF, it's so sharp but 40-50% of the photos were unusable. It sucks.. no other lens has better sharpness than the Sigma when it focuses just right. It's been 2 years since then... Perhaps I might get one again with the newest Firmware updates from Sigma.

      +zion darl Different lenses for different purposes. e.g. you can't zoom with a prime lens, although they allow a shallow depth of field and got a nicer bokeh. If you want this look, then go for it. If you want to use different focal lenghts, you may take a zoom lens or you have to buy several prime lenses. Maybe you should visit channels for videography and not photography. But in the end it all depends on you and what look you are going for.

I am considering to upgrade for a full-frame at some point. And was going to use a prime lens for a portriats and some item shots. Sony has some own lenses but most of them are too expensive for me, or the cheap ones are too noisy for my taste. Im asking because i could get this lens as used and its in good condition but im not sure. Any thougts ?

    • @LightWthoutTheStatic
      @LightWthoutTheStatic Před 8 lety

      +Jaymes Harris Full frame is great. I would actually suggest the opposite as Jaymes Harris. Lenses will last a lot longer than camera bodies, and the investment staying power is high if you keep your gear in good working condition. Camera bodies age out and completely lose their investment value constantly because of technology growth, but some lenses actually end up appreciating in value. I've always gone by the rule that you should spend at LEAST as much on glass as I would on a camera body. I've consistently bought full frame Canon or Nikkor AIS glass (with canon EF mount converters) and it hasn't steered me wrong yet. Lenses can make our break your gear capacity. Creativity first, as always, but when it comes to camera I'm a 'lenses first' proponent.

      Got my 18-35 from SLRHUT for £500 including taxes and free shipping, it arrived in 3 days from USA. I'm loving it. The day it arrived I had a family in house portrait photo-shoot booked. After much testing all morning I found it sharp, but inconsistent at 35mm. But after incamera micro adjustment it ended up being the main lens for the evening shoot. I have been getting 99% percent accuracy. I took 92 shots with this lens, of the couple in their living room with 1 YN568 speedlight rogue flash bender, silver reflector and a jelled rotolight LR48 LED for tones and mood and I deleted only 2 images(because of framing not the lens) IT IS THAT GOOD. Great light conditions make this king of the cropped(samurai sharp). I can boldly say after a week it's better than the 50mm f1.2 on my 70d. I. Had nothing to correct/edit in Lightroom 5 except framing. Workflow time cut by half. I delivered the images... An easy reference for my work...
      Video it's crispy(I will do more video tests)... Gwaaaan Sigma, big ups SLRHUT.co.uk

    Just got this lens in 2018. I wonder if there has been any quiet engineering updates to it to address some of the CA you mention. Even so, it's going to be my go to for portrait work until I can afford a full frame setup.
    The Canon 50mm f1.4 is in bad need of an update. Better optics, better coating, and either STM or nano-USM, and if possible IS. If they did this and kept it around 400-500 USD, it would be one of the best selling lenses they ever made. Even if it was 600 at release but then rebates and incentives got it down into that price range, yeah, it would sell. Canon might not be impressing lately, but if there is one thing they are good at it is making inexpensive but effective lenses.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  Před 6 lety

      When manufacturers change the optics they tend to do an official re-release

    • @kevindiaz3459
      @kevindiaz3459 Před 6 lety

      I don't mean changing the optics, I'm talking about engineering. The longer anything is manufactured the easy it is to make it, and as time goes on engineers sometimes come up with little tweaks to the setup that can improve the way the item works. For lenses this will usually result in a more recent copy outperforming an older copy, but usually just in some minor way. It might be a bit sharper, or quicker to focus, or less CA, less noisy, etc. I'd be sure that Sigma is no different than anyone else, and these little engineering updates don't usually end up as new versions, they are usually quiet about it so that people don't freak out over not have the most recent revision in spite of it not being anything of real circumstance.
      Then you have shit like Canon releasing a mkIII of the 70-200mm and literally telling everyone that it really isn't any different optically. Or the converse of that where they replaced the dodgy IS module in the 17-55mm F2.8 without calling it an update (another lens in need of an update). The fail rate on those was pretty high in the beginning, now, I don't really hear about it anymore.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  Před 6 lety

      I haven't heard anything I'm afraid - maybe get in touch with Canon, I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you if they've quietly improved any of their lenses.
