  • PART 2 : Available soon!
    The journey of Marco Polo, famous venitian merchant who in the 13th century travelled from Europe to China, and met with emperor Khubilai of the mongol Yuan dynasty, is one the most famous stories of humanity. However, in complete parallel to Marco Polo, one religious adventurer born in China, would accomplish the exact opposite, travelling to Europe and meeting several famous khans, kings, and even the pope. This is the story of Rabban Bar Sauma.

    Although I get that you're probably starved for images when it comes to Rabban Bar Sama, the image you use is actually from an icon of Mitrophan Ji--an Chinese convert to Orthodox Christianity who became a priest and was martyred during the Boxer Rebellion. The story of the Russian Mission in Beijing, including the story of Saint Mitrophan, might prove an interesting topic for this channel

    • @History_of_China
      @History_of_China  Před 2 lety +2

      You're absolutely correct. There are no pictures of Bar Sauma, and my first choice was a depiction of a Nestorian monk from Persia. Given Bar Sauma's ethnic background, though, I decided to compromise and take a likely more realistic - although anachronic - picture.
      That subject would be very interesting indeed! But I have many more projects planned before :)

      Well thanks! For me, the best method after getting a basic knowledge of the language is to simply get immersed in native pronounciation (though media or real life interactions), and practice, practice, practice! I find it way better to try to reproduce the sounds you hear rather than read a phonetic transcription. I also have a few Chinese speaking friends who could help me and correct me when I mispronounced things. Hope that helps :)
