I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. I’ve purchased a few stoves off your reviews. I’ll say this. Don’t spend to much time worrying about what others think. There’s always going to be “knock-offs” to products. Review them all. What you’re doing is helping the community as a whole. The snobs will be alright.

Hello Ernie. Your point concerning whether or not you should support knock off stoves was correct. Some people can't afford the higher priced original and I would argue that if you cannot get out in the field as much as you would like, why pay the higher price? I myself will spend the extra money if the quality is apparent between the two stoves. Camping and backpacking should be enjoyed by everyone no matter how much money you are capable to invest in the sport. Also, the simmer function made this a very versatile system.

Competition is good, they will all copy each other once the patent is expired and then they will develop better products and the cycle will start again. In my mind, since the Jetboil and Firemaple are made in China they are pretty much in the same category. MSRs are still made in the USA so the choice to me is really between buying made in USA vs made in China and whether you want to make China's regime stronger.

That is good information. Reviewing the copies is not that bad. They are out there and people are going to buy them. If the review helps to make the right choice or avoid buying equipment unsuitable for the requirements, resources are saved. Eventually the is a good thing.
For a meal at home this cook set is nice. It heats water for dehydrated meals fast and the simmer function allows some real cooking too. There a lot of one pot recipes with fresh ingredients out there. I think the stove offers enough bang for the buck for considering it for a car kit.

I bought the X2 before you posted this review and I missed this one. I have yet to get out and use it, and I'm still inside my return window, so I'm going to return the X2 for the Polaris due to the versatility. Honestly, I can't tell a difference between the jetboil and fire maple systems, so I went with the fire maple system simply due to price. They seem exactly the same to me, but I like that the fire maple pots have flip out handles for ease in pouring. Thanks for an honest and great review!

Thanks for the review. I have a pocket rocket, which I really like and use almost exclusively when backpacking. That said, I burned the 💩 out of my knuckle one day in windy conditions and ever since, I’ve been very reticent about using the stove in any type of breeze. I like the Jetboil design, but as you say, the price is astronomical. My sister has the Jetboil and loves it, but they are wealthy people. $70 is still a lot for me, but this stove seems like a better option for 2-3 day short hikes, which is all I do these days. The weight isn’t an issue for me. I’m not a gram weenie, I generally hike 7-9 miles per day and I want comfort in camp.
I agree the knock offs are problematic for USA companies with patents. However, this is the world in which we all now live. A 1-2 year jump is all any company can expect before the copies are made.

I already have a Jetboil - got the Sol Ti in 2012 - so I'd not buy this, but I'd agree these type of systems are good backup systems like store in car on an emergency kit as they pack well all you need. But for either a short backpacking overnighter alcohol wins, or if doing real cooking a remote canister stove with nested couple of pots is more able to prepare variety of food.
So these all complement each other and we each have unique existing ownership and contexts.

I have the Fire Maple Polaris and really like it. For the money, it is a good quality system and I feel it is a great value. I like the fact that it is pressure regulated and that it has great simmer control. The universal pot stand is a nice bonus, so you are not limited in what you can cook on. This really hits the sweet spot for quality, features, and value. Excellent for car camping or short backpacking trips where weight is not a concern.

Yeah, you do have a problem with stoves, but it's useful to the rest of us. "I film myself boiling water as a side hustle" is delightful. I always recommend this channel for folks who are looking to figure out what they want or need in a backpacking stove.
Not gonna lie, I probably watched 50-80 of those 140 videos to try to narrow down type and model of what I wanted in a stove. I 100% appreciate having budget options in gear. Places like REI can be overwhelming for branded high end offerings, and uneven for which brands and types of stoves are offered. It's nice to see reviews on a variety of products, because buying stuff online and especially on Amazon can also be overwhelming.
I vanlife and car camp, so weight is not necessarily my main concern but size is. I eventually went in for a Firebox Nano stainless steel with the adapter sticks for a Trangia burner. But I appreciate the "this is adequate for the need" of a random folding windscreen I picked up for about $3-$5 at the local Daiso Japan store. I also know that there are a lot of fancy backpacking cooksets out there, but my Stanley Two-Cup and Two-Bowl cooksets are JUST FINE at a pricepoint that absolutely cannot be beat. The outdoors should be for everybody, and it's always good when a channel has a variety of options for every budget.

I've had the X1 for a few years and it has held up well. It's not quite as good quality as a jetboil, but it's good enough in my opinion. You really do save gas with the heat exchange design, but the heat exchanger also add weight, so for short solo hikes it is not worth it, but for longer hikes with many people sharing a stove (i.e. if you carry a lot of fuel) it can be worth it.
I'm not entirely convinced there's a significant advantage to having a pressure regulator valve over a needle valve (assuming both are properly designed).
Pressure regulators should not be better at low temperatures, but perhaps they can provide more precise regulation over a wide range of temperatures. So they might, in theory at least, be better for simmering, frying and advanced cooking. A traditional needle valve also works well at low pressure, you just have to open it more than you would at high pressure. The downside to a needle valve is that you have to pay more attention to the flame and make adjustments now and then (but how much of a problem is that in practice?). The needle valve also has an advantage: it is simpler so there's less that can go wrong (but maybe they are reliable enough that is not a problem either?).

    • @GeekfromYorkshire
      @GeekfromYorkshire Před rokem

I have the Fire Maple Blade 1 (remote, no pre-heat), the FMS-117T (on canister, Ti) and the FMS-300T (narrower flame, more compact), and the Trangia gas converter (remote, pre-heat), and a Jetboil Sol Ti (discontinued, got 2012).
For short trips (overnight) alcohol wins on weight and less to fail. For 3-5 days a remote gas seems to be my preference with a stacked mug+pot for varied cooking. The tricky part to decide is the 2 day trip, gas begins to win on weight and is faster cooking.
As for weight of the heat exchanger vs fuel used, for my setup the heat exchanger saves me average 5.5g per day (cooking twice/day) while the heat exchanger pot + stove is 30g heavier than my two-nested-pot-remote setup. So the heat exchange does save weight for 6+ days BUT I'm wanting more cooking variety on those trips so I'm finding the Jetboil I already own is never taken now - was taken all the time a decade ago before good Ti remote stoves came around paired with good wide Ti pots which nest.
My Jetboil relegated to emergency car kit just for compact neatness but I may even swap that out and sell the Jetboil. These heat exchanger systems seem to be getting squeezed into ever narrower niches.

Can we drop the idea that it's because people can't afford it. It's about priorities. If you're backpacking all the time and way of grid then maybe every gram counts. If you're just starting out then it's nuts to buy the best gear. Maybe a goretex jacket is a bigger priority, or better walking boots. It's not you can't afford it, more that you can't justify it.
As for buying the original. What's original, the fin design/heat exchanger. 90% of it still stands on the hundreds of ideas and knowledge developed before it. It's a design concept that stands in the shoulders of everyone that designed the rest of the system over decades.
