    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Před 2 lety

      Hi Barbara. My brother Craig and his family live in Liberty, MO not too far from you. Actually, we've only had less than 1" of rain over the past couple of weeks. If only there was a way for Mother Nature to spread the rain around more evenly. Far too much damage due to flooding and not sharing with drought-stricken areas.
      Yes, the dahlias and giant hardy Hibiscus take our breath away every time we are out and about in our gardens. Lots of photo ops. Hope all is well now that we are getting close to Labor Day activities.
      As always, thanks for taking time to watch, care and share. "Keep The Love Growing" - Lynn & Richard

    The indian plantain is something I don't think I have seen before. The leaf structure reminds me of a locust tree. Those balloon flowers are beautiful!!! I have never had luck with those here - my plants stay small and I don't get many blooms. I love how you have the area by the free library so inviting and colorful.

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Před 2 lety

      Our native Indian Plantain plant can be rather aggressive if left unchecked and can grow 5-8 feet tall. Along with the seed droppings it wouldn't take long to grow a forest of Plantain. Balloon flowers are another fascinating plant that has always intrigued our children when first planted as are we.
      As for the little red free library, it has become a hit with all the new children dotting our neighborhood. Always great to see an active neighborhood where children can play without being constantly on guard. If only we could wish-snap our fingers so that all children could have the fun, we had as children.

    I love the story about the tomato berry. I did look for them here to grow but its still coming on the boat. LOL I did see it at the supermarket a few years ago but never got to taste it. One day, they will eventually make it ashore LOL I love the sunflower jungle you have going there - beautiful. Those hibiscuses never disappoint...love them. Great video, Lynn & Rick! xx

      Hello Mary. Hopefully the docks down under don't have the backlog problem recently experienced here in the US. Hopefully those delicious TomatoBerry plants will make it to a nursery near you. When they do, make sure to buy the red ones. While the yellow ones are fine, they aren't as sweet. We've grown both. We will be doing a video just on the Hibiscus Rose Mallow family soon.

      Good morning Rod. We'll keep an empty chair available for you anytime. One of the great pleasures in life is creating an environment that brings joy not only to us, but for others to enjoy as well. Even while we're working people stop their car, get out and ask us about plants and all the colorful blossoms that caught their eyes.
      In the late afternoon after a day in the garden we'll retreat to the front porch with our dogs Pepper and Jingle and enjoy looking at all the different textures, shapes and colors. Even on rainy days we too will sit and read a book while drinking an Arizona Arnold or a Sprecher Root Beer, talk with one another about life or simply sit in silence enjoying the moment. We wish that all mankind would find or create that special place that grants them the peace and serenity we are blessed to have as well.

    My tomato berries did not do well this year, I think I had a batch of contaminated compost, as they grew deformed, had flowers but never any tomatoes. It was difficult for me to watch you pop that tomato in your mouth, haha!! I really enjoyed your tour, you have some very lovely plants that look so healthy. Thank you!

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Před 2 lety

      Yikes, now we feel badly doing a taste test on video. They were our 1st of the year, and we just couldn't help ourselves. You will just have to take a long daytrip and fill your tummy with our delicious TomatoBerry tomatoes, along with lots of other tasty delights. You probably will go home with some plants as well. We'll keep the light on. How in the world did you end up with contaminated compost? Maybe next year, plant them in containers newly filled with fresh potting soil. Your garden is so beautiful, What variety are those coral/orange color Dahlias? Im growing Canna Lillies this year for the first time. I know you said just bring them in in the fall, do u cut off the foliage or just leave them like they are?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Před 2 lety

      Thanks Trav. Dahlias & Cana Lily are tender bulbs/tubers here in Wisconsin zone 5b. In late fall after the first hard frost, we cut off all above ground foliage, dig up and store all tender bulbs/tubers over winter in a cool, dark and dry space (basement). If we didn't, they wouldn't survive our winters. While there are stories of exceptions, most tender bulbs in our zone need to be stored this way. Some gardeners prefer not to bother and just purchase new ones each year and avoid storage space. It's a personal decision. Hope this was helpful. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Hi Tim. Missed you lately. Hope all is well in the U.P. We're starting all the fall cleanup chores and trying to find some free time as Richard is going to change hosting companies and will have a lot of work to do rebuilding our website and email address connections. He's also concerned over all the work needed to shut down our S-Corp after 25-years and all the personal connections he also has to establish, especially our CZcams Channel. I think he's actually looking forward to something more rewarding than pulling weeds and replanting plants where I want them. Such is life. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. Are you ever bothered by the Hibiscus Sawfly Larvae on your hardy Hibiscus? I didn't notice too many holes in your leaves. I'm in Southern Maine and they are munching away. Last year was the first season and I saw them then. Neem oil does work but I have a few Monarch Caterpillars moving around to find a place to attach to, so I only applied once a few weeks ago and don't want to reapply just in case.

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Janet. We have not had sawflies on our Hibiscus or other noticeable places (knock on wood). Because this summer has been really hot and dry, we also saw minimal Japanese Beetle damage in early spring and very few mosquitoes and even Monarch butterflies than we would normally see. Happy about the first two but miss all the beautify butterflies this year. Thanks again for watching, caring and sharing. "Keep The Love Growing." - Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com

    Quick question not related to this video. Do you grow Lorenzo Trussoni Heirloom Safflower?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Před 2 lety

      Hello Louise. No. We don't but it looks very spiky just like my hair. Interesting history - Lorenzo brought this heirloom plant from Italy to Genoa, Wisconsin back in 1889 and used as a saffron substitute. It's an heirloom mostly grown out west, 50% in California alone. Looks very lush and only grown to around 2 feet tall. A very lush looking plant. Saw that SeedSavers sells seeds.
      Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Perhaps it will go on our Wish List for next year.
