Bret, I attended your 230PM talk on Saturday. We were both wearing the same shirt! haha

The Tenere ticks a lot of boxes, but the even simpler, tough as nails, air cooled DR650 is a better bet for Africa. It bugs me that we can't buy new DR's here in Europe due to pesky E.E.C emissions laws. The crazy thing is, I get stuck behind poorly maintained or worn out diesel trucks & buses every day, that push out more pollution in an hour than a DR would in a hundred years.

The HP wars, reminds me of the megapixel wars when digital cameras were first a thing. It's an easy marketing point but not as important as they make it out to be. The T7 could really be were the DR650 is today in 20 years. The solid reliable bulletproof bike that won't kill your wallet.

Currently on a 990 and the Tenere is appealing to me for the reasons you mentioned. 790 makes me nervous with all the tech on board when traveling long distance far from a ktm dealer. I doubt I'll ever get rid of the 990 but when it is time to retire it from full-adventure riding duties I will be looking for something more along the lines of the Tenere. Hopefully by that time, some other companies will also be entering that category.

I like how light they are and how they slip under my gear and don't chafe. Also, they are drip dry so when I arrive, I just wear them in the show and hang them overnight. - Mini Folding Fire Stove
    - Toiletries
    - Chain Cleaner/Lube
    - Spare parts - chain/links/brake pads/spokes etc.
    - Tire pump/repair kit
    - Basic cleaning kit, shield/visor spray, micro cloths, latex gloves, disposable paper towels
    - Medicines, Sun screen, lip balm, extra ear plugs, bug spray, mosquito net hat, hand sani, wet wipes, etc.
    - Extra boots (typically a lighter weight backup pair, though both should be Gore-Tex laminated or lined)
    - Heated Vest/Jacket Liner
    - Thermal Helmet Liner/Head/Neck Warner
Not including water, this should be 5-8 lbs. of gear, and most is essential.

I don't understand the comparison though... to compare the T7 to the DR650 is far fetched. They are comparable in the sense that both are "dual-sport/adventure bikes", but one is 165kg Wet, the other is 205Kg Wet...one has 1 cylinder, the other has 2...
I mean... comparing these 2 like one is the replacement of the other is a bit like comparing a CBR1000 to a Vstrom650.
I would even say that someone who is happy with the T7 won't be happy with the DR, and vice-versa, they are fundamentally different bikes in the experience they provide (I own a DR650, so I know)

  • @charlesmattina3787
    @charlesmattina3787 Před 4 lety +4

DR650 may be ancient but at half the price of the Tenere it is twice the value. The DR650 outshines the Tenere on most of it's "redeeming qualities".
    1. Simple electronics on the Tenere - The DR has even fewer
    2. Steal frame to be welded - The DR also has a steal frame that is more accessible
    3. Lack of damage prone areas on the Tenere - DR has even fewer damage prone areas
    4. 9.5 inches of ground clearance on the Tenere - DR has 10.5
    5. Inverted Forks on the Tenere - Unless I am on a race bike on the track, i'd rather forks that don't need immediate attention once i get a leaky seal. Inverted forks will leak oil all over your rotors and tire.
    DR is also lighter.
i will admit an 18" rear on the tenere outshines the DR's 17"
Ultimately, the Tenere is going to be a better handling and more powerful bike. Is that worth twice the price though?

It is the engine of the MT-07 a little modified, but it has 75hp, 68Nm max, 204 kg with full fuel tank. What you have to be aware is that despite it is written "tubeless" on the Pirelli it comes with chambers...I have tried it on road, it is fun to ride despite the small engine (I have a 2015 GSA) but couldn't try it off road. But I can't wait to see if the new Husqvarna concept bike is coming on production: Norden 901 it has the engine of the Duke 890, it could be a revival of the 990 adventure....

Hey Bret, I just did a comparative test T7/790S/850 GS Adv and I can tell you that during those 3 days on on & off road, T7 behaved quite well, the best in highway the most planted (speeds in excess of 170-190 km/h), very planted on twisties, but because of the very stiff suspension it was a bit jumpy, you could feel that much more in off road (compression and rebound both very stiff) but I have a 950 Adventure and I'm used to that :)) seat was comfortable for those 200+ km range that the 15 litres tank gives you. Consumption at around 5,5-6 liters for 100 km. To me it felt like a lightweight 950 Adventure and you don't feel the lack of power, those 70hp are more that enough, the engine is super-smooth compared to the 790 S & 850 GS. Overall a good bike but the 790 Adventure impressed me in all departments, on road - on rails, off road confidence inspiring and very able. The 850 GS was a heavy sofa on wheels :( I hope this helped a bit :) Cheers!

Good informative video but what you think about the 16 ltr tank? I have a 23ltr tank on my XT660Z and was on my tours through the desert very pleased with it. I think an ADVENTURE bike have to have a larger tank than 16ltr!

i love the path of "keep it simple" chosen by yamaha. I would have added only a tc for less experienced users or for beginners, but very simple, 3 settings: on, hard conditions (wet, snow, city, etc. all in a more marked setting), off. but overall the best value for money on the market today (here in EU, i hope the price stay under 10K also there)

I definitely like the specs on the T7... would like to see the low slung raid tank as an option but thats not a deal breaker (can always carry extra fuel). Price is also very appealing... even fully dressed with rugged bags and all the farkles it should be 12-13k

You poor US guys... I've actually tried the Ténéré 700, had one for 24h while my SuperTen was on the mechanic. Only ridden it on road, and my off-road experience is very limited (not to say nearly null), so keep these two things in mind. My final conclusion, after ridding it, was simple - if i could afford to have a 2nd bike, THAT would be the one. It's quite lightweight, it moves around very well. I'm used to the SuperTen 1200cc torque, so for me the 700 lacked a bit, but nothing critical and that you won't get used to it. It rev's higher than the SuperTen (as expected), and it lacks no power - actually, on a steep climb on a highway (yes, we have those in Portugal), i tried to twist the throtle in 6th gear, starting at 70km/h (a little under 50mph) to see how it behaved, and it reached 140km/h (about 95mph) in less than notime. I'd change three things if i purchased one: the seat (the original is quite stiff, not the sofa-like i'm used to on the SuperTen); add chashbars (they're small, so the weight won't go up much); and the licence plate holder (it goes waaaay too far back). Other than than, i really loved ridding it, and i'd love to try one offroad.

Enjoyed the review because yes- I'm looking. My concern as an older (63), "vertically challenged" rider is: even w/ a lowering kit, how much lower will the seat go? I'm 5'7"/180#. My current ride is an older tourer, a 1987 BMW K75. After two years I've decided I'd like to go offload more; I'm looking for a "two wheeled Jeep Wrangler", and those 850cc-1200cc monsters are too big for me. THIS bike might do the trick.

That new Ténéré looks great, but the incandescent turn signals look out of place. LEDs would allow a little extra power for things like heated grips. I hope this is the start of a new trend for lighter weight ADV bikes.

    Hi Mototrek team - Bret.
If we want to comply to a Leave No Trace approaches specific to Moto-Camping trips, several topics don't seem to be talked about very often.
As a general rule of thumb, I know that heavy loads are carried the lowest and closest to the center of the bike.
I'd like to have the MototrekADV rider's approach and insight on the following topics.
    A - Water supplies :
A.1 - How do you carry/store/strap on the bike ?
    A.2 - How do you filter/clean it ?
    A.3 - What quantity do you usually carry/day ?
A.4 - What types of containers do you use ?
(MSR Dromedary, MSR Dromlite, Collapsible water bottles, Hydration backpack, Rotopax 1 Gallon-Water , other methods ?)
    B - Food supplies :
B.1 - How do you carry/store/strap on the bike ?
B.2 - How do you store it night ? (
Bear Bag, Canister, Hanging on a tree)
B.3 - What types of containers do you use ?
(Ursack Allmitey + Oppsack, BearVault, OPSAK Odour Proof Bag, other methods ?)
C - Trash (Food remnants or Human waste):
C.1 - How do you carry/store/strap on the bike ?
C.2 - What types of containers do you use ? (STS Trash sack, OPSAK Odour Proof Bag, Dry bag + Ziploc, other methods ?)
C.3 - What types of methods do you use ?
(On site - Cat Holes / Carry-on - Wag bags or Restop bags ?)
    D - Fuel :
D.1 - How do you carry/store/strap extra fuel on the bike and manage with other luggage ?
    D.2 - What quantity do you usually carry/day ?
D.3 - What types of containers do you use ?
    (MSR Fuel bottles - 30oz - 887ml, Rotopax Fuel - 1Gal - 3.80L, Desert Fox Fuel Cell - 3L, other methods ?)
Thanks for your input and recommendations.

Well, at least here is South Africa, it looks like the Tenere 700's closest competitor is the DL650 Vstrom.... Similar pricing and low tech approach. No doubt that it'll be a "this one for more road work, the other for more dirt" sort of argument. I look forward to the ride review and hopefully a comparison between those two bikes

I’m driving the S10ES, and for me, the height is the issue along with the top end weight. The 700 looks interesting, but want to see if I can find the ground with my feet. Unbelievable the amount of gear you take, looking to down the amount I take.

    Great video (again)!
Could I ask for a complete list of Your packing list from this video?
(There is not much of this light weight camping stuff, here in Denmark...)
I'm about to buy the 2018 Enfield Himalayan. "Itchy boots" recommend some nice overland gear in her videos, but maybe You could recommend some things- or custom parts (for a low budget rider)?
Thanks to all Your videos, I will now try to find the right suspension kit, panniers and gear for myself. The Himalayan is sold in Denmark with Pirelli MT60 50/50 tyres. Looks like they are OK tyres.
I'm your age, 90kg and 178cm, and want to be able to ride some dirt tracks, and when I get some practice, perhaps a bit rougher terrain like the TET.
I have 30 years on the road, on all sorts of bikes, but almost 0 off-road. (There are no off road training programs where I live, only speedway, trial and roadracing. So it's going to be self teaching via CZcams videos!)
And a last question- Is chains with o-rings not good for off road? No one ever talks about it?!
    Best Regards-
    Jacob, Denmark

what do you think about those two pipes on the right side engine? im guessing coolant lines coming from a pump? Having the "lip" facing forward scares me. Also that type of oring connection has always leaked on me at one point or another on anything that vibrates...

Like a lot of bikes, those indicators look like they will bust up in a fall over. Needs tough flexi LED. There is body work, so possible damage. My ancient DR650 has none and I've fitted flexi LED blinkers. Not concerned about damage if I ever drop my DR. Still, I'd like a Tenere 700 anyway. As well as my DR that is....
