As somebody who lives outside of the US. Hearing a child say "we practiced a lot", "...we started in kindergarten" and finally "Im scared someone might shoot me" just fills me with horror and dread for the after-effects that these kids will have to deal with for the rest of their lives.

It's important to remember while what you are saying is true there were real heros in this situation too. The off duty BORTAC officers who stopped the shooter rushed in as soon as they arrived without backup or gear and the person who killed him took a bullet to the head before doing so. But you're right there's no excuse why the feds had to come in to save the day.

It was my understanding that there were many many officers there at the time of the shooters death. Also, I cant find where it says anything other than a general "he was injured". The entire police force in Uvalde is a total of 15 cops, which means they have 2 cops on duty per shift! They engaged the gunman 4 minutes after he entered the school, and kept him pinned in one room until back up officers could arrive travelling 30+ minutes to get there! If not for them engaging this sicko, he could have walked from room to room killing over a hundred. You clowns seem to think there were hundreds of cops abailable mere seconds away, and thats just not true.

As an Australian, it blows my mind that kids in America need to do drills for shootings. I'm so glad of my countries gun laws as this is something we here just don't even ever think about getting shot. The only drills our kids get in schools is for if a fire broke out.

Comment number 2 As a kid, my friend was in a restroom when another student themselves in the chest. It was a tragedy and confusing for the lot of the school. When I reflect on that time, it's obvious that my friend had changed and the rest of the school did not change like he did. He was there, saw it. He was witness to such a horrible thing. Others students had only the pain of the idea, for him that pain was not so metaphysical. I'm trying to say this kid will be ok. My heart goes out to all involved in this heinous crime. How many times does this have to happen? How mny innocent people, children, have to die or be traumatised before action is taken? The “2nd amendment” citing is quite frankly outdated. It was never intended to allow the possession of modern day firearms or weapons but for weapons available at the time. The constitution can be amended to reflect current times. It is alien to me that people are happy to put their people including their own children at risk just so they can have a deadly weapon. The “I need a gun to protect myself, my property, my family….’ is crazy! Why not introduce tougher restrictions for obtaining weapons? Regulate the access to guns, remove the threat and therefore the need to possess the weapons. If civilians do not have guns there is a minimal risk that when/if you need to protect yourself/family/property you will not be confronted by someone carrying a deadly weapon and therefore no gun required! I know, what a crazy idea! It’s not like this happened in other countries following school shootings, is it? It’s not as though those countries have very few incidents of mass shootings, or gun crime as a whole, is it? Of course all their residents are being killed by those breaking into their homes, being killed by people out in the streets because they don’t have guns (sarcasm!). Too many times the rebuttal is “but the UK (for example) have high incidence of knife crime. There are issues, yes. However you are more likely to be able to disarm a perpetrator armed with a knife and bythe very nature of the actions required to maim and injure people with a sharp weapon fewer persons are harmed/killed. The truth is the gun market in the US is worth millions, if not billions of dollars. Politician’s pockets are lined by the NRA. As long as this is the case too many more innocent people will be murdered by guns. Yes, guns. Yes the person wielding the gun is responsible but without the gun they wouldn’t be able to commit the mass tragedy. Wake up and save your children and save your future.

Robb Elementary: Communications Failure I am a former law enforcement officer. I now teach little ones, the same age as the babies in Uvalde. Texas is no different from any other state in that we have multiple police agencies in any given radius with different command structures. But that does NOT hinder or eliminate communications. For example, take Houston. There is Houston PD, Harris County SO, five Harris Constable Offices, state troopers assigned to Harris County, and the school police agency. Adjacent agencies have their radios programmed so that officers can scan and monitor neighboring agencies to assist and minimize harm. Therefore, of most of the responding officers, they should have heard the dispatchers’ communications-regardless of agency: Uvalde CUISD, UPD, UCSO, TXDPS HP R6, or USCBP. Let’s say the public safety answering point (PSAP) were UPD that received one of the 9-1-1 calls. All neighboring agencies would have heard the transmissions. To be fair, there is a priority programmed into each agency’s radio systems. For example, in terms of HPD, their transmissions would take priority before another agency’s. In other words, in the event that that that were traffic on HPD’s and HCSO’s priority channels (channel 1) simultaneously, each respective agency would receive its prioritize transmission that overrode secondary transmissions. When I was a police officer, we knew each officer’s unit numbers. For example, when I heard 662 on the radio, I knew that it was Corporal Jane Doe. That’s how small communities work. Just about EVERY ONE of those officers was able to hear radio communications from neighboring agencies. Again, 9-1-1 is designed to route calls to closest agencies. Given the scan-and-monitor capabilities, most of those officers should have heard the dispatches. If UPD got the call, all neighboring agencies who had their radios on scan heard it. If UCISDPD got the call, same thing. If UCSO got it, same. If TX DPS got it, same. After Columbine, we completed extensive training for such-ALONE, no backup, no tactical gear, save or die. Each of us entered scenarios ALONE, and we had to take out the bad guys-ALONE. Remember the burglar bars that were awesome-until they prevented victims from escaping from fire in their emblazoned homes? What about a master key? Hardening the classrooms was a great idea, but did we create an obstacle for ourselves? No one thought to have a master key like we have for fire departments at gated communities? Did we set up our children? As with the rest of the civilized and selfless world, I’d like to know why. WHY??? Why are AR-15s on the market? WHY????

I’m thankful to these children and the parents of these children, for speaking out. This must be a very hard decision, but it’s so important. What matters is these these kids words! Our government must listen to the horrific stories and look at their faces! Look into their eyes!!! In those eyes you see fear, anxiety, PTSD and a part of their childhood stolen forever!!!! This cannot happen!!! This was preventable!!! Why hasn’t our government funded schools to make imperative renovations, so a shooter cannot enter? If a shooter is able to enter why are their not safe rooms for each classroom? Why no bulletproof glass inside and outside our schools? Each state requires mandatory testing of children, to show how their schools are doing… but what is the state and government doing for our children? NOTHING! Nothing has changed since Columbine! I feel bad for his parents and for the child, wish he never had to deal with the evil that some people do in this world. I know it is good for the kids to speak about it but I think it should be done with family & psychologist. As an outsider, when we were small we idealised America, the freedoms, technological endeavors and so on, funny we even dreamt of visiting or moving there, but as adults that image we had is long gone. In this case the failure to take a direction cost these innocent lives. Outside USA these innocent souls would have lived a full life....

It's important to remember while what you are saying is true there were real heros in this situation too. The off duty BORTAC officers who stopped the shooter rushed in as soon as they arrived without backup or gear and the person who killed him took a bullet to the head before doing so. But you're right there's no excuse why the feds had to come in to save the day.

The entire police force in Uvalde is a total of 15 cops, which means they have 2 cops on duty per shift! If not for them engaging this sicko, he could have walked from room to room killing over a hundred. As a kid, my friend was in a restroom when another student themselves in the chest. It was a tragedy and confusing for the lot of the school.
When I reflect on that time, it's obvious that my friend had changed and the rest of the school did not change like he did. He was there, saw it. He was witness to such a horrible thing. Others students had only the pain of the idea, for him that pain was not so metaphysical.
I'm trying to say this kid will be ok. His trauma is lesser the some, and more held to the idea, and not to the experience.

My heart goes out to all involved in this heinous crime. How many times does this have to happen? How mny innocent people, children, have to die or be traumatised before action is taken? The “2nd amendment” citing is quite frankly outdated. It was never intended to allow the possession of modern day firearms or weapons but for weapons available at the time. The constitution can be amended to reflect current times. It is alien to me that people are happy to put their people including their own children at risk just so they can have a deadly weapon. The “I need a gun to protect myself, my property, my family….’ is crazy! Why not introduce tougher restrictions for obtaining weapons? Regulate the access to guns, remove the threat and therefore the need to possess the weapons. If civilians do not have guns there is a minimal risk that when/if you need to protect yourself/family/property you will not be confronted by someone carrying a deadly weapon and therefore no gun required! I know, what a crazy idea! It’s not like this happened in other countries following school shootings, is it? It’s not as though those countries have very few incidents of mass shootings, or gun crime as a whole, is it? Of course all their residents are being killed by those breaking into their homes, being killed by people out in the streets because they don’t have guns (sarcasm!). Too many times the rebuttal is “but the UK (for example) have high incidence of knife crime. There are issues, yes. However you are more likely to be able to disarm a perpetrator armed with a knife and bythe very nature of the actions required to maim and injure people with a sharp weapon fewer persons are harmed/killed. The truth is the gun market in the US is worth millions, if not billions of dollars. Politician’s pockets are lined by the NRA. As long as this is the case too many more innocent people will be murdered by guns. Yes, guns. Yes the person wielding the gun is responsible but without the gun they wouldn’t be able to commit the mass tragedy. Wake up and save your children and save your future.

Robb Elementary: Communications Failure
I am a former law enforcement officer. I now teach little ones, the same age as the babies in Uvalde. Texas is no different from any other state in that we have multiple police agencies in any given radius with different command structures. But that does NOT hinder or eliminate communications. For example, take Houston. There is Houston PD, Harris County SO, five Harris Constable Offices, state troopers assigned to Harris County, and the school police agency.
Adjacent agencies have their radios programmed so that officers can scan and monitor neighboring agencies to assist and minimize harm. Therefore, of most of the responding officers, they should have heard the dispatchers’ communications-regardless of agency: Uvalde CUISD, UPD, UCSO, TXDPS HP R6, or USCBP.
Let’s say the public safety answering point (PSAP) were UPD that received one of the 9-1-1 calls. All neighboring agencies would have heard the transmissions.
To be fair, there is a priority programmed into each agency’s radio systems. For example, in terms of HPD, their transmissions would take priority before another agency’s. Just about EVERY ONE of those officers was able to hear radio communications from neighboring agencies.
Again, 9-1-1 is designed to route calls to closest agencies. Given the scan-and-monitor capabilities, most of those officers should have heard the dispatches. If UPD got the call, all neighboring agencies who had their radios on scan heard it. If UCISDPD got the call, same thing. If UCSO got it, same. If TX DPS got it, same.
After Columbine, we completed extensive training for such-ALONE, no backup, no tactical gear, save or die. Each of us entered scenarios ALONE, and we had to take out the bad guys-ALONE.
Remember the burglar bars that were awesome-until they prevented victims from escaping from fire in their emblazoned homes? What about a master key?
Hardening the classrooms was a great idea, but did we create an obstacle for ourselves? No one thought to have a master key like we have for fire departments at gated communities? Did we set up our children?
As with the rest of the civilized and selfless world, I’d like to know why. WHY???

I’m thankful to these children and the parents of these children, for speaking out. This must be a very hard decision, but it’s so important. What matters is these these kids words! Our government must listen to the horrific stories and look at their faces! Look into their eyes!!! In those eyes you see fear, anxiety, PTSD and a part of their childhood stolen forever!!!! This cannot happen!!! This was preventable!!! Why hasn’t our government funded schools to make imperative renovations, so a shooter cannot enter? If a shooter is able to enter why are their not safe rooms for each classroom? Why no bulletproof glass inside and outside our schools? Each state requires mandatory testing of children, to show how their schools are doing… but what is the state and government doing for our children? NOTHING! Nothing has changed since Columbine! As an outsider, when we were small we idealised America, the freedoms, technological endeavors and so on, funny we even dreamt of visiting or moving there, but as adults that image we had is long gone. In this case the failure to take a direction cost these innocent lives. Outside USA these innocent souls would have lived a full life....
