Got excited for the Cody Townsend skincare routine only to be let down
Well it's pretty simple. I don't.
I was hoping for the haircare line
Rub some wax on, then hit it with a hair dryer. Do this once when you first get them. Trust me, it works.
See www.wildsnow.com/27086/climbing-skins-easy-tips/
stoked for the softgoods episode AND THE BJARNE GEARLIST EPISODE (especially camera carrying walkthrough)
We gotta see the truck setup too at some point
Awesome video! Could you include an overview of your super modded boots in the next gear talk? Kinda wanna know what the mods are for some inspiration for my own boots.
CORONAPOCALYPSE got me trapped in the house. Watching the 50 is the best way possible to pass the time. Completely awesome series.
Cheers. Well more to come!
I almost love this more than the regular episodes! Great stuff
As a ski enthusiast, the Fifty and how you approach each challenge is a constant source of inspiration.
Cody Great Job this year brother your killing it and I really enjoyed watching you ski he Outter Body Grand Teton and the list goes on! MADD respect for you and positive vibes. Thank you again for all your advice and help. These episodes are bad ass brother!!!
Love watching these, aspiring to do snow mountaineering a lot like what you have going on in these series. Absolutely love it.
Thank you for explaining the bindings. I watched this episode and immediately purchased the S-Lab Shift 13. I have been looking for a big mountain hard charging binding. The video clip included in your explanation depicted what I wanted new bindings for.
Love what your doing here and I hope you get to keep on for years to come. I am a Montana boy that loves the Rocky Mtn. front and Beartooth for adventuring. Best part......no one else around!!!!!
Hey Cody - Great vid, thanks for posting it! What I found most interesting was your thought process behind kit choices, rather than the specific models you use, so keep the ad-lib and stream-of-consciousness coming in the next bonus vids!
The only thing that my skiing has in common with your skiing, is that they both end up with a cold beer! Loving this series... Signed, 65 year old resort skier! :-)
genuine and honest review. Like IT!
I’d be so stoked to see a tour of your truck
actually i'm a snowboarder but funnily i forget that completely when i watch your videos. it's just about being outside ... very motivating ... greetings from austria
For gear talk 2 I'd like to see more on the bindings, apparel, goggles. Episode 3 perhaps cameras, media etc!
I picked up a set of QST 92's at a crazy, year-end blowout price and managed to get a few runs on them before everything was shut down for the season. I absolutely love them! Like Cody says of the 106's, a fantastically versatile and predictable ski. Point it and go, it'll do exactly what you ask of it every time. I'm an East-coast skier and this is my first "fat" ski, coming off some older Dynastars that had a massive (relatively) shovel but were 71 at the waist. Couldn't be happier with the QST's! Now if I can just find that old Swatch watch I had back in high school... That thing is probably an antique by now and worth some coin!
Thanks for the wicked videos Cody, keep after it!
I definitely want to hear more about your boot modification!
Love the videos man keep up the great work!
I completly agree. I also prefer a good grip the whole time when I shift my hand up and down my pole.
finally some gear! very cool, thanks!
Would like to see an updated Gear review of what you are currently using. Watching many of your videos assisted me in making the decision to purchase the 2023 QST 106’s last year and they have become the favorite of the 4 skis I own!
Keep these coming they are extremely helpful & Thank you!!
I dig! The beer is essential gear for the video!
Cody you def deserve more than 12K subs! Amazing what you provide! Hope when you pitch, the $$ people realize just what you do give us! Thank you! So much fun!
on 13k now!
Thanks for the excellent gear vlog.
I haven't skiied for a long time, but I love this channel. If you guys keep it up this could be a great channel. Amazing content, super interesting. I fucking love it
You should show and compare your modified boots with the normal ones so us regular people can get some inspiration!
Particularly interested in how you make them stiffer:)
He has a full custom carbon cuff and uses a foam injected liner. Lots of the salomon athletes also add a scarpa maestrale strap across the ankle to improve heel hold.
@@littlelawson06 yes, this but there is more...and that's why I don't go into it really, my boots are still quite different than lets say Chris Rubens, who mods his boots as well. It's super personal and I tweak mine to my exact preferences.
Cody Townsend I can imagine. But that’s just what I worked out from Instagram stories!
@@CodyTownsend Thanks for answering but I'd still like to see this in a video, maybe you and Chris should compare your boots as well? I'd find it interesting:)
Good stuff! Thanks for the insight!
I would love to see a gear episode diving into more mountaineering specific gear!
Cody, thanks!
For your sponsors: for the next season I'm buying the gear from this video.
Hope it will get you some extra money for the Project :)
Can we get an episode on your rig? Love the camping setup and would like more details.
Oh yeah, that'll come for sure.
Thanks for sharing Cody. I'd be interested in what sort of boot mods you're doing as well. Also how often are you skiing down with the toe piece locked in on the MTN bindings? Thanks, I'm loving this series.
Thanks so much for doing a gear review. It really sucked zooming in on all the photos of you, Jimmy, and Killian trying to see what you were skiing on...you would be surprised how seldom a clear photo of gear shows up in a video. I need a good ski for steep hard snow...my 112 under boot skis chatter something awful when doing hop turns. I thought your ski on the grand was 88 under boot so I had to settle for a 94 Ibex Elan because 88 isn't quite wide enough. I haven't tried it yet, but if I had seen your review first I would have gone with your Salomon guaranteed. But I haven't purchased bindings yet so Salomon it is!!! My first Salomon binding since I raced in grade school 30 years ago. Your videos are very inspiring and fun...so important to me that they are so down to earth and honest representation that even the best skiers in the world have struggles...thank you!!!
You are pretty funny! Love your stuff! Making my recovery from a broken leg that much better! Thanks!
I feel this as I am also recovering from a broken leg due to a skiing accident.
@@connorsmith9324 bummer! i hope your recovery goes well. i have been on the mend for 5 months now and i might have to go back under the knife. it happened in the beginning of the season too. keep me posted!
I will buy Salomon skis and swatch because of this video. Make more videos!
This channel is real solid. Only just found it.
I'm interested in your boot modifications. What you do and why. Also, do you ever use a more alpine specific boot like the S/Max or S/Race.
Disclaimer, I use the S/Max 130 and loved them this past season.
I don't use those boots simply because I'm walking so much and alpine boots are really good at the down, really really bad at the up.
@@CodyTownsend Thanks. Keep up the good work. -Reverend Russell
Boot modifications are specific to each skier. Because each skier has a different shaped foot and range of dorsal flexion in their ankle's subtaylar joint, i.e. forward flex. Individuals also tend to pronate differently and may have other conditions like hallus valgus or retrocalcanial exotosies. I would never recommend that someone copy another skier's boot work simply because what works for @CodyTownsend will not work for you. Advanced boot fitting isn't a "dark art" either. It is simply a matter of someone that knows what they're doing taking a look at your bare feet inside the plastic shell and attempting to shape the generic piece of plastic that costs 800 bucks around your unique feet. I can also guarantee that no human being should be skiing in a 130 flex boot unless they had their FIS points well under 100 in their racing days. Boot flex isn't the right place to flex the ego, GoPro Hero 7 footage is what you want to spend the extra cash on. For example, I am 6'2", 230 and ski in the Atomic Waymaker Tour 110 and am in heaven when I carve perfectly round, dynamic turns after 4 hours of skinning. This, my friends, is why one should never buy ski boots online. Spend the extra cash and find someone like me that can help. Or be a former high school quarterback and things will work out like they did for the star of this video.
anLTproduction Really? Was all that jibberish necessary? You sound like you just got out of your first Master Fit boot clinic and your trying to impress your hard goods supervisor.
Boot fit is specific to each skier, but knowing what others are doing for their desired fit will give others inspiration for solving their own fit. Especially for BC skiing where there are vastly different modes of fit (tour vs down)! I have flat feet and every “expert boot fitting” made me hate touring until I listened to some salty flat-footed dirtbags about their boot mods.
Love your channel Cody. Awesome content. Always interested to know about the gear you are using. Thanks
Any suggestions on which snowblades to use in more intense lines?
j skis bladezzz
Ask the BrownBlader, he gets after it
If any of Cody's sponsors are reading these comments: Yes, we do rewatch these videos! Yes, I do ski more than twice a season now because Cody makes rad stuff seem possible! Yes, I am looking at Salomon gear because of this epic series!
I watched many episodes and wondered about those poles. :)
Came here to learn about the poles. so THANKS CODY haha.
Thank you, very helpful! 🙂
The new QST 106 is the best quiver ski I’ve ever ridden. I use it 99% of the time I’m on any mountain, in any conditions. Performs incredibly!
Totally agreed
Salomon does make damn good skis though. I never really was into Salomon until 2 seasons ago, when the local rep put on a demo day at the end of the season and I got to check them out. I was blown away! Huge fan of Salomon now!
Well this is awesome to hear. Our skis have come a long long way in the past 5 years.
I, also, am very curious about your boot mods... and I thought you were gonna share your skincare regiment, but then you didn't. Thanks for the rundown on the QSTs. Glad to know that they added tail rocker. Can't wait to give em a try.
Thanks bud. Post some more hear talk please. Especially backpacking and climbing gear
Great channel
11:30 Perfect definition of charging it hard.
What sunglasses do you wear? Looking for something to use uphill that doesn't fog, and your shades seem to have the wraparound coverage that's necessary to not go snow-blind after a long day. Awesome episode, and love the series.
I came here for the snowblades and monoski and was disappointed!
I was here to read about the newest saucers??
Damn! I shoulda done a mono ski review.
Skincare routine on skins, what skins do you use/why would be great! A fundamental piece of gear to any touring adventure ...
Dear sponsors of Cody and the fifty project, we buy the gear and we want more episodes please and thank you
niceee!!!
Those Poles!!!! 😂 btw I have a tutorial on my channel to do the same extended grip as Cody has :) have been using the wrapped poles for two seasons and absolutely love it!
Cheers!
Which raises a vital and underasked question.
What is the etiquette for dropping flatus on a skin line ? Should you drop out and go back before hitting the release catch, or is it toot and devil take the hindmost ?
We want to hear about the modifications you make to your boots!
Subscribed!
Do your toes get cold? How many socks do you wear? Wool? What kind of lip balm do you use? My feet get cold and no matter what I use my lips and face gets chapped.
Thank you for your videos. I really enjoy seeing everyone have so much fun. 🦋
Hey Cody, Great episodes. What length skis are your QST 106'S and MTN Lab skis?
Hey, Love the series. Do you have a pair of skis you use on piste (groomers) or still use your backcountry kit?
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
Cody thanks for doing all these videos. For someone whom has tough times with boots (punching out, liners etc) I was curious what modifications you do for your boots to help make them work?
It's a lot of stuff. Some in the name of personal tastes, some in the name of testing. All in all though, what I do is stuff I wouldn't recommend a lot of people to do. I've spent a decade testing and helping design boots and that knowledge has given me the confidence to work / build my boots myself. But it can create problems (see Pyramid episode) and be financially irresponsible. Honestly, the best course of action is to learn from the best boot fitter in your town.
hey i love your blog! can you do a gear review for knuckledraggers too,, curious looks like jones your buddy rides. im on burton, looking for facts on other more dependable setups. right on->
Wish Salomon boots were a tad wider in the toe box. I like extra room for BC and my hot swollen feet. Agree that 106 is the best all around BC ski, but I was so impressed with my 88’s today in May powder!
Hey Cody, I'm also very interested in your boot mods!
I have to modyfy most boots to make me truly happy and would love to see what you do...
Another for the boot mods!
Please do one on winter camping for skiers!
Cody, how does the qst 118 compares to the qst 99? Of course the rocker is more aggressive and the flex softer, but is the feeling somehow familiar? I have the Qst 99 and absolutely love them but I need a wider Ski for the really good days.
Do an episode on your truck setup!!!
Thanks for taking us through your quiver! Looking forward to a future softgoods review too. Did you really not test ride the MTN Explorer before the Grand? Insane. BTW lay off the Sriracha and sausage in those breakfast burritos to reduce your methane production. And, we really want to know: what is your skin care routine?
Yup, those were the first turns on those skis and my freshly built boots. Unfortunately the boots didn't work to my liking and have continued to tinker.
Hey Cody, I was wondering... I love the 106 for new snow but why is it that you love the 106 and jump to the MTN Explore which I have and use but the two are apples and oranges. Why is it you don't have a pair of 99's instead of MTN? It has the same characteristics and length the 106 but a little narrower. I use the 99 on patrol everyday and have a pair with the MTN tech binding. Just wondering... Thanks! Love the vids!
Wait I would love to know how you mod your boots though! As someone with weird feet, I love picking up tips
hey cody i love your videos. They motivate me to take even more time for the things I really like to do.
I have always rented equipment for my ski tours and I have had to make a lot of compromises in terms of comfort or the performance of the skis. I have very big feet and only a few companies make touring shoes for me (eu size 48)
This year I want to buy my own touring/freeride skis with bindings etc.
What do you think of a Salomon Qst 106 with a Shift binding? I want to take some skis into the mountains and have fun on the slopes/deep snow and everything in between. The weight of the skis is not that important to me. I'm 1m90cm tall and weigh about 130kg with luggage. I find it very difficult to decide on a ski that I don't have to make too many compromises on.... I hope you can help me out. Thank you very much for the great videos. take care, and enjoy the rest of the fifthy line☺️
Greetings from Switzerland❤️
Can we get a tour of your entire gear room? Mainly to see if you got the Oscar in a good place.
U the man
I agree that boots are a very personal piece of gear... So can you do me a favor and ask Salomon to bring back the SX91 rear entry boot as some sort of "Heritage" collection for me. They are light, warm, comfortable, easy to get on and off, and have the first ever walk mode by just undoing the buckle. Touring pins in the toe lug would be icing on the cake, but I can mod that in myself. Serious.
Look at these cool poles! Anybody know the model? By far the coolest poles I have ever seen in my entire life!!
Rad! Is there a Bjarne camera gear vid coming.....?
Yeah we can do that for sure!
@@CodyTownsend Please do! Enjoying your videos a lot. Would like to learn the effort behind the actual filmmaking.
would love to see your truck set up
How do you stiffen up those X-alp boots? I would like to use a touring boot like that more if they were stiffer. I tried this pair of boots at the shop I work at and they feel like you could break them in a single run.
What has the biggest impact on driving the ski and turn initiation - the boot or the bindings?
Would like to see what you do to modify your boots.
Hey, any chance of a skills tips video? I’ve been working on my transitioning, as well as trying out ski crampons. I notice we don’t see you on ski crampons. Thanks!
Hey Cody. Where on your skis do you prefer to have your bindings mounted?
K I have watched all the Fifty episodes. Since we're talking about gear...that Arcade hat needs to be available again like asap.
Shotgun a beer on your next Gear talk Episode and wax some skis! yewwwwwwwwwwwww!!
Another guy interested in the poles! Can you easily adjust the heel riser and lock toes etc withe grips? Is there a decent hook on them for this?
No specific hook on them but I've also never had a problem with normal poles for this.
What skins do you use during this project as well as shorter local tour days?
Nice video. Can you do another gear video on your axes, crampons, rope and other mountaineering equipment?
That's definitely coming down the line.
@@CodyTownsend Thanks for the quick response. I really like your series and I think it's a great opportunity to inspire new ski mountaineers and backcountry skiing done safely. Some pretty gnarly lines too ;-)
Have you had any issues with release on the MTN bindings? I'm looking to get a pair of AT bindings and am liking the looks of those because they're on the lighter side but am a little worried about how they'd perform when skiing?
BOOTS? we need some more info about the buckles. It is obvious that the boots are modified, but please tell us more
Agreed! As well as that slingshot on the pegboard.
I would but I feel like it wouldn't be of much help. I've spent so many years destroying, testing, breaking and modding my boots to my preference that a bit of CZcams time would probably just confuse or lead people down the wrong road. It's in my opinion, just best to talk to you local boot shop expert about personal needs.
Wow, thanks. I am also on the "destroying and testing" phase :). currently on QST 99 (the best ski for almost all type of conditions, except the deep pow days) with Shift and testing on Nordica StRider 130 (done some modification on the liner and some small amendments on the shell).
Anyway, thank you for you feedback and hope to see you someday in Bulgaria. We have some nice places here you will enjoy. Check it out on your next visit to EU.
enjoy your "FIFTY" project.
Best regards
Alex
What about the center mount on those QSTs??
I am just getting into backcountry skiing. I noticed your ski length are of normal length. I watch other channels and they seem to ski a bit shorter. I would think going shorter would save weight but would effect performance. When sizing time a newbie what rule of thumb would you use? Thanks great channel
Are ur poles modified aswell? Did u add the extra long grip urself? Very clean and comfy looking :)
Nice
Another vote for a boot mod video!
Nice Video! 🤘 Can you talk about your Mounting positions on your Skis. And why do you mount your binding on, for example +3cm from the recommended point?
Thank's a lot Cody!
Kai P He mounts them almost to center, I believe. Cody did an instagram story mounting skis last year and explained that he doesn’t believe forward mounting hurts performance. He’s right. I’d guess he uses the longest length skis and mounts them -1 to -3cm back from center (recommended is -6cm for QSTs)
Depends on the ski and personal preference. For the QST 118 I go -2cm from dead center, which is quite an extreme mount point that I wouldn't recommend for many people. For the QST106, I go +2cm from mount point, especially on the new ski with more tail rocker. The MTN is on the line.
@@CodyTownsend thank's for taking the time to answer me. I am excited to watch your next video!
@@CodyTownsend I'm interested as to why you mount the MTN on the line when it's so far back compared to your other skis. Does having the mount point far back really provide a big advantage on steep, firm, exposed lines or is it because of the shape of the specific ski? I'd really like to have a stiff, light ski for such lines that I can mount close to center to suit my preferences
