The comment about something happening in Sweden last night was based on a tweet by Trump, where he claimed something had happened in Sweden last night and Swedes responded by saying they had no idea what he meant.
there was also another tweet where Trump wrote about Fuinns cleaning the forest in the context of firefighters in the US, and the Finns responded by posting pictures of themselves "vacuuming" the forest.

      1. how does Biden "support genocide"?
      2. So what is your solution then? Voting for Trump because you believe a far-right government will somehow shift the Overton window to the left? Or not vote at all, even if Trump overtakes Biden in the polls? If there was a serious possibility that Biden would lose to Trump, do you just do nothing, stand by and let it happen?

One of the biggest reasons why the Dutch are speaking pretty well English, is because we have almost everything subtitled. Nothing is dubbed, only some movies and cartoons for toddlers and small kids, there for we hear everything in the original language and slang from a very young age, plus we can read what it means! 🤷🏻‍♂️✌🏼

In Germany, no citizen has to register to vote; prison inmates also have the same right to vote. Everyone has 2 votes, one for the party in the Bundestag / state parliament, and one for a candidate in the constituency. Party advertising and election campaigns are regulated. Every valid vote counts.

LOL at the subtitle dilemma. We never get content dubbed, it's always subtitled. I'm so used to subtitles dubbing irks me it feels so unnatural😄. Over the years I've learned the basics of so many languages the subtitles in most European content I watch get supported by the original sound, so the need to constantly read has lessened. Lately though, I've been watching a lot of Asian shows and getting frustrated over having to concentrate way more than I'm used to, so I can relate.

In Australia it’s straightforward. Each party has a leader. Each party offers candidates for election. People vote for local candidates. Whichever party has the most seats in the House of Representatives becomes the government and that party’s leader becomes prime minister.
The Senate is different, slightly more complicated but each election half the Senate is up for re-election. Senators serve six years. After that they go for reelection or retire. These half senate elections result in a slower turnover of senate majorities and have a hopefully good damping effect on legislation.
Also, everyone has to vote (or at least turn up and get their name crossed off) and our elections are held on Saturdays.
With multiple parties you must have preferential counting. So whoever comes last gets their votes reallocated. Rinse repeat until two are left. Over 50% wins.
Some of the registered parties are wild - the Loony Left Party, the Marijuana Party, Animal Liberation Party, Hunters and Fisherman’s Party and more.

Here in the Netherlands we have a system that every vote counts. This means that we have 10 political in our parliament and how many seats a party has in parliament depends on the vote they get with the elections. This also means that no party has the majority and therefore we always have a government based on a coalition in parliament. I think this is better than the elector college because every voter has a voice in parliament

I always think of the UK as US Lite, that whatever goes on across the pond will eventually be adopted here. Our current government has taken a massive shift to the right...or they were always that way and I didn't realise just how deplorable they are until I started paying more attention to politics. If there's ONE thing I can thank Trump for, it's serving as a warning to those that were previously apathetic to politics. The US quickly realised that he had to be gone and voted Biden...thank fuck! I can't wait for our general election, to be done with this 14 year Tory nightmare. I hope they're voted into oblivion and the UK can finally start redeeming itself.

    • @paul1979uk2000
      @paul1979uk2000 Před 8 měsíci +2

The thing is with the UK and I say this as a Brit, the UK have many of the negative elements of the US, whiles being a European country with a lot of the benefits of Europe.
It feels to me that the UK can't seem to make up its mind in what direction to go, but having seen everything that's been going on the last few years in the UK, US and EU, we really should be moving more towards the European model, it's less frantic when it comes to politics, especially on the debate of left vs right, European countries tend to do a better job of looking after it's citizens better than the US, even the UK doesn't score that well by European standards, whether that be quality of life index, work culture, happiness, Europeans are doing it better than the US and even the UK to a less degree, and it doesn't surprise me why so many European countries dominant the to 10 quality of life indexes around the world, whereas the US is slipping down the ladder since Trump got into power and it's not really changing under Biden, as for the UK, we've been slipping for some time, before Brexit but Brexit isn't doing the UK any favours.
But seriously, if you look at all the modern countries around the world, the US is the odd one out, almost every modern country has a strong safety net, universal health care and many other benefits, the US is quite weak in a lot of those areas, the UK does better but even the UK is lacking in many areas compared to European standards.
The Tories are a big problem in the UK, being pro business, they seem to want to import a lot of the negative elements of the US to the UK, they've been quite successful at that over the last decade that we've become quite the joke around the world, especially during the Brexit days.
Maybe with a Labour government after the election, maybe the UK can start digging its self out of the hole it's got its self in, but it won't be easy when we're dealing with the cost of Brexit and our voice isn't as important as it was when we were in the EU.
If Trump were to win the next election, that won't look good for the US, it's one thing him winning it once, it could be a fluck or Americans were angry at the system and wanted change, it's another thing to re-elect someone that is a joke, it could very well do a lot of damage to US credibility around the world if Trump won, far more then what was done last time because this time it will show that it's the people that are the problem and that isn't easy to fix to put the country on a stable footing.

I don't think, this movement to the political right or anti-progressiv or whatever we should call it is only in the US. We do have it in Germany in the 2020's, where even social-democrats and the greens jumped on the anti-migration train. We do have a rise of a reactionary right-populism against the progressivism of the 2000-2010's. And in history, this is kind of normal. There's allways a cycle of progress and than reactionary anti-progress...
Thing is - and I do see the US in a pretty weak spot there:
The reactionary time is a time, where the system can break down and used by extremists. We did have that in Germany in the 1930. It's the same. We now do have - thank to our fellow Americans btw - a constitution and democratic system, that most likly is strong enough to withstand such attacks. I don't see this in the US, the constitution aged badly, the society lost democratic culture at all - and I really hope, you still make it through this reactionary times as a working democratic republic. This election will be a breaking point to test it.

My impression was the nuts faction was the majority, but this could simply be personal bias. From outside it was crazy how clueless and stupid a US government could react to a crisis like the covid pandemic (and our own german goverment was acting confusing an unprepared too, so our comparison is not to a ideal scenario). But after they installed the coronavirus task force it was impressive what the country (USA) are still capable to do and how quickly they have overthrown most other countries (test and especially vaccination) even having a late start.
