Let’s change the terminology here. The word is “weapons” control and the USA already has weapons control. For example, it’s illegal to own a Milan anti tank missile in ANY state . When the 2nd amendment was written, the average citizen of the new republic, was allowed to own military grade weapons, that were military grade for that time. (You can take on a tyrannical government on near equal terms when the forces of the state are armed with the same muskets that you own). But there was a practical side to the debate. Guns are very important in lawless Somalia and so too were they in the newly created frontiers in the Wild West. A nation where a paranoid schizophrenic has easier access to firearms than he does to mental health care. Don’t shoot the messenger. I’m merely holding up a mirror to yourselves and if you don’t like the image that you see then don’t smash the mirror or criticise the person holding it. Do something sensible that the rest of the civilised world has accepted. Introduce better more sensible controls. You already have them. Just extend them.
