  • In this talk, Breton Lorway examines the effects of American Consumerism on the environment.
Breton Lorway is a four-year senior at Cushing Academy, and a day student from Princeton, Massachusetts. Being from a small woodsy town, she’s grown up learning to love the earth. She is excited to voice this passion of hers at the TEDx conference, and hopes to further her relationship with the earth by majoring in environmental studies in college.

This is more crucial than most of this audience can imagine. Consumerism is truly killing our environment. I'm moderately immune to buying stuff, but the advertising is starting to damage my quality of life.
Out of the last 200 emails I've received only 15 were not specifically geared to causing me to give money, spend money. This doesn't count the advertising we have to wade through to get to any relevant content. The only way to minimize the bombardment is to spend even more money for subscriptions. And what I've found with that is that it only creates more targeted advertisements. The worse is that I have no idea how to escape it, other than going deep in the woods, or desert, where there is just no signal.

This is a really important theme, she did amazing on her presentation, i just think that she was too nervous and it looks like it was her first presentation but that's alright, good job girl! I think consumerism is killing our world, and affecting people lives bringing psychological illnesses as depression, anxiety and other stuff

This video is important to reflect of the practices we are perpetuating in the world and the way they are achieving it. Practices such as those introduced in the video are extremely helpful in improving our habits and helping the world to keep itself for future generations.

    Great speech!
It makes us reflect on the impact actions because we are also affected by our own consumerism, consumerism that cannot be sustained because the planet does not have enough resources to supply all the demand that is generated by the exacerbated consumerism.

The video has a very important and current theme, which impacted me even more because it's a "philosophy" that I'm trying to follow, I enjoyed her idea to bring important people to support your speech. I just think she could improve her posture, because walking around all the time ended up deconcentrating me

I confess that in my day to day life, I don't think about it much, which is a mistake. America, like the world, has been intensifying the cycle and addiction to consumption that is empowered by various sectors of society, bringing more and more obsolete products.
I find the idea of minimalism very interesting, but it is quite complicated in practice. But anyway, it is something that must be thought of. My favorite part was when she expressed the damage of our communism to the environment. Was very good!
I would recommend that she focus more on specific points because she has walked a lot and this can be bad for listeners. Anyway, it was a great presentation.

It's not necessarily the making and transporting and buying of "stuff," it's the method in which it's made. The short cuts in industry and the average consumer's indifference to that method is the problem.

The presentation has logic, credibility and emotion. Talking about conscious consumption today is very important to slow down the effects our society has contributed to global warming. Spreading this message is essential, nowadays it is heard in many places, but not so contextualized, direct, with references and the impact that the images bring has contributed a lot. Note that the presenter was a little nervous at first, especially by walking, I suggest using some techniques to reduce this as deep breathing, at most. Finally, I believe that if we all have done our part, even a little, the sum of all this will make a difference.

This video makes us reflect on our daily actions and the direct consequences on the environment. We often do not realize that rampant consumption harms nature as much as pollution generated by industries. Breton Lorway invites us to rethink how many things we have, what we buy, and how we can consciously consume

The Bible says to not love the world nor the THINGS in the world. Yes, we need certain things to survive, but not in excess. That's why I love the Scriptures. It keeps me on track. I wish everyone would follow it. It will help a lot with consumerism. Jesus is the ultimate minimalist.

Not that simple. We really need legislation to help us. The average consumer cannot be expected to figure out what product has lowest environmental impact. E.g. people thought single use diapers were worse than cloth diapers. Detailed analysis shows there is practically no difference. You may think pouring a glass of cold locally produced milk in the glass damage the environment less than heating up coffee produced on the other side of the planet and shipped to you. But you'd be wrong.
The best approach IMHO is the label products in manners that help us make sensible choices as well as taxing fossil fuels and CO2 emissions, so that objects will get a price more in line with their environmental impact. Give regular people lower income taxes e.g. but cover the lost income by taxing inputs to production harder. E.g. price water usage higher, to avoid overconsumption of water when producing things.

      @povelvieregg165 Před 3 lety +1

@@kithkin01 Ideologically speaking I want as local government as possible. However for practical reasons I see that isn't always that easy. E.g. if my town increase environmental standards, while the next town over reduce theirs, then all my towns companies may move to the next town over.
It is the age old conflict between individual choice and collective choice. Ideally you want as much individual choice as possible, but often it has the detrimental effect of encouraging free loaders, and a race to the bottom, rather than a race to the top.

“Saving the environment from consumerism” > suggests consumerism to save environment. This is a really bad argument that shifts blame from the companies that are responsible onto individual consumers who in reality have no ability to change production. She of course goes further into suggesting further mysticism and individualism as livinfg a hermit lifestyle, but what came of his endeavors? No, we must hold the manufacturers accountable and not blame the individual consumer who may not even have the financial means available to make such changes.
