Totally agree... I think the main problem most people have with her is she has extremely easy songs that showcase little range. Pretty sure there are couple hundred high school sopranos that could give her a run for her money.
+Archiduc De Belgrade 1:28-1:32 If you don't call that off key, then you're tone deaf. She's also very quiet and lacks any kind of power during the entire performance. She almost comes across as somewhat flat but I think it's largely because she's so quiet.

Besides that, she has a terrible singing voice but the song is catchy, so that's not what I'm defending. Okay people you need to learn the difference between a live performance and the CD. Yes this is different, because she has a band behind he and its a more for a TV performance. You can tell by her vocals, its a more relaxed version. And its not straining, it her vocal style. She is amazing, deal with it kids.
It's as though that's as loud as she can sing and if she puts more power behind it her voice turns into a whisper. I bet it's hard for her to do things live

Beautiful. Ellie is such an underrated performer. It's so crazy to be that there are artists like this who not only write their own music but have a trademark, unique voice that just comes from within. Adele is like that too. But quite honestly, most artists aren't like that. The ones who are doing the best commercially can hardly sing a lick (I'm looking at you, Taylor Swift and Rihanna).

I don't get why people hate on her voice. She's got grit, which I love, but she definitely can sing and does hit those high notes. Why everyone expects live performances to be cookie cutter versions of the record is beyond me. I love that she sings her songs differently each time. As for this particular performance, not her best, but lets be honest with ourselves, SNL performances notoriously sound pretty bad. The studio just isn't good for live music in general, I think.

I know... she doesn't sounds the same live... but let me tell you just one thing, she is an amazing singer, as a soprano, she can hit the high notes (you call whispering) with no problem. She's also singing with a huge number of, what i call, "effects" on her voice, so she's not a flat singer, she goes up, down, and plays with the song every time, and to do that, and do it the way she does, it needs a lot of talent and practice. I'm a soprano too and I know how hard it can be to control the high notes, so yeah, she is doing a great job.

Probably because you know a thing or two about a live performance. Hiccups and quirks are what make live performances special. If I wanted to hear the studio version it's a lot cheaper to just stay home. But that's not why I go to live shows. I want to see and hear the human behind the music-not a robot. Why do you think Milli Vanilli or Ashlee Simpson caught so much heat way back when? Fake is fake.
I'm not saying she made any mistakes either. But hearing those hints of rawness in her voice and how she works (and I don't mean "struggle") to hit a few of the notes... It's magic.

Her mic just usually isn't loud enough. Most of the high notes in the chorus, which is basically the whole chorus, are all in head voice, and that can sound significantly softer than chest voice (which is basically your talking voice). Ellie's voice is already soft so her head voice needs better amplification or else it will come across as weak.

The problem with Ellie is that she's very hit and miss, sometimes she sounds just look like the CD (usually when her mic is turned right up) but other times she sounds strained. It's a shame, but some of her live performances are actually amazing.

I rate this as a very good live performance--and I'm not even a big fan of hers. I dig the raspiness in her voice here, and prefer it to the recorded version. I think a lot of people don't realize the amazing breath control required to sing this live.

I like this song, but her live is quite different from recorded version.
She can't seem to figure out when to breathe and always short of air to push the sound out. I find that telling for somebody who writes her own songs. She needs help on this. You can easily tell when she is out of breath and forcing out the note, or worse just stop singing at the end of some verses.

Musician here, and it's not at all a weak performance. She's not a power vocalist like Adele, or Beyonce-that's what makes her unique. Her pitch is great, her breath control is outstanding (any idea how hard it is to sing this live?), she's solidly in the pocket rhythmically and her raspy tone gives this performance more depth and shading than the original studio version.

Brittany lip syncs. Ellie is singing quite well here for it being only her 2nd Ever North American TV appearance and with the pressure of a big audience as this was SNL's 700th Episode.
youre craaaaazy if you think she's bad live. look at her other performances, she does amazingly well. Theres alot more that goes into a live performance, she mentioned in an interview that she has a routine for trying to relax her vocal chords too, she may have had an off day that day. Dont be so quick to dismiss her talent!!
