this was very helpful...I purchased a redcamp awning to put on my jeep and return it asap...horrible..I camp alone sometimes and wanted something like this that seems to be easy to put by yourself... thanks
Glad you found it useful! I have found that the Kingcamp can sometimes be tricky to put up solo, but it’s definitely not as complicated as that Redcamp looks, and the addition of the upgraded poles and the magnets makes it even easier!
Same, the redcamp one is awful to setup solo
Thanks for the vid! I have the same TRD RAV4. I bought one of the ARB awnings and never got to use it. It doesn’t come with any hardware or brackets. You also need a aftermarket roof rack for it (for the RAV4 anyways). The way the rails curve don’t allow for the ARB to be attached very easily. It was a huge hassle. After a year of trying to figure out a way for it to work I gave up. I ended up selling and losing a ton of money. Definitely going for your option. Thanks for the info. 🙌🏽
Glad I could help! I found the original crossbars that came with the vehicle to be lacking in capacity, very noisy, and kinda funny looking. If you check out my video "8 more Easy 5th gen Rav4 upgrades"(czcams.com/video/MKGsJ3R3HKQ/video.html) I actually ended up getting aftermarket cross bars and a roof rack from Yakima and adding attachment points for a potential ARB-style awning, but I haven't pulled the trigger on purchasing one of those yet.
I actually just used the KingCamp on an excursion in Tennessee and it was really handy being able to pack the KingCamp in a checked bag on the airplane and then add it to the rented UHaul van I used to go exploring and give me shade under the hot-ass Tennessee sun. One of the advantages of not having the awning attached to the car at all times is that you can move it from vehicle to vehicle!
Super helpful - thanks for sharing all your modifications. All sounds like a big improvement.
You bet!
Definitely helpful! I guess I’m now in the market for one
Very helpful and comprehensive, thanks!
Glad it was helpful! You're welcome!
Sweet! I just came across your video after watching a Kelty vid. Good content! Keep doing cool stuff!
Hey, thanks!
I'm in the market for a vehicle tent. I love the price on this one!!! Thanks for the video!!!
You're welcome! Glad you found it useful.
Great idea for the magnets!
Your link to the awning shows as "sold out" bummer
Hey thanks for watching! I just checked and changed the link, they're available for $99 currently. Thanks for pointing that out!
Getting harder to find a place to stick a magnet on any vehicle, my new truck is mainly aluminum or plastic.
I’ve been debating on whether to fork up the money for MoonShade or to go with this version. Thanks for doing this review. Super helpful.
Glad I could help! Thus far this set-up has served me well. I haven't seen/used a Moonshade in person yet for comparison--guess they haven't decided to send me one for review :)
Really like vehicle though. Bought the KingCamp and stakes
Green elephant don’t have the tall poles anymore. I could not find them. Only 4ft now. So had to go with another brand that go to 8ft 2.4”
Oh man, that's a bummer! Probably some supply-chain issues I would imagine. Thanks for watching!
how do the poles stay in place at each end of the awning? Is it like a fabric pocket or a rubberised pocket? Bought something similar recently and it was using rubberised pockets and the rubber broke off when I first tried to insert the pole. Bummer.
The ends of the awning have grommets at the tips where the poles are inserted. The poles themselves have a straight metal tip covered by a removable rubber sleeve which goes through the grommet and held in place by the rubber sleeve. Hope that helps!
