“How long” you’ve ridden is determined by how much you ride each day, how diverse your riding is, etc. Has very little to do with how many years you’ve ridden. I know a lot of guys that have ridden for 25 years and probably have ridden around 10,000 miles. I do that easily in under a year. Not much question which of us has more “motorcycle experience”.

I bought a 2005 model which has no bells and whistles, no fancy ride modes or ABS, just pure raw old school biking goodness. Its just as nimble in the twisties as the 636's Ive owned but at high speeds is somewhat terrifying. 100mph really feels like 100mph as the wind drag is something that you dont get with the aerodynamics of the sport bikes. Also it purrs like a kitten at 70mph on the highway. Im in freaking love.

I have had V-Strom 1000 and V-Strom 650. The 1000 is actualy easier in city traffic, because the hydraulic clutch take less effort than the cable-operated clutch on the 650. Both of them could do very high speeds out of town, more than I ever needed. The 1000 had problems with the helium-filled front tyre in first and second gears, though.

How long did it take you to get confident riding your 1000RR? I have a 4RR I’ve been riding for two months. My plan is to learn how to ride for one riding season, then upgrade to a S1K. Only reason I’m debating is because I heard if you put it in rain mode, it’ll bump it down to 130HP which is similar to a 600cc

@@tiger2q a 4rr is a great bike to get used to sports bikes on. Going from anything less than a 600 to a 1000cc is always going to be a big jump, there’s guys on 600s who get scared on 1000s but it really depends what you are like. If you gradually get used to revving a 1000 out and learn bit by bit you’ll be okay, if you have no self control you’ll potentially die. If you’re unsure at all - I would go to a 600 first as it wouldn’t disappoint and is more realistic to get used to.

I tried an Aprilia Tuono V4 a few weeks ago and I was left in absolute awe of the machine. It lifted my front wheel in 230 kph in 5th... I immediately wanted one, but honestly, riding my KTM 790 Duke lets me use all the gears and is super quick and agile, it's absolutely made for twisties. I love going into a curve and quick-shifting down 2 gears to stay in the proper revs, feeling the rear wheel move a little, etc. I feel like the Tuono would just feel too much of a bike for the twisty roads I love to do. Like I wouldn't need another gear, wouldn't matter what riding mode I'm in, whatever. It's just too refined. But I absolutely get why people have them. And this is not even a proper sports bike.

I bought my first street bike 5 months ago, a KTM 390 ADV. A couple weeks later I bought a Ducati SCRAMBLER 803 cc air cooled. Lots of fun. A couple weeks later I bought a Ducati Diavel 1260S. Ooh Laa Laa..... the torque and the power curve of that engine are addicting. The key to riding ANY motorcycle is to first learn how to control the throttle and how to control the clutch. I learned about 15 years ago by riding single track dirt trail in the desert around Phoenix for 4 years. Once you master the clutch and throttle, no bike is dangerous or intimidating to ride.

Yammie talks bad about the Versys but I disagree, it was a great bike,,, I had to trade it in because it was rebuilt after a wreck and then got flooded and repaired again but it was never the same, it was like... anemic, didn't want to go to full power... I miss her though... going weird places, up down curbs and stairs and it would always do little mini wheelies when leaving red lights,,, it way sicker than Yammie makes them out to be. The 1000sx has a traction nanny that keeps me feeling "mature and responsible" out there. All in all though,,, I love them both.

I wouldn't mind an MT-10, maybe next year. Most of the people who ride 600cc Supersport motorcycles in my area, plan on moving up to liters, one person who I rode with promptly was nearly killed after getting a used R1, the power is definitely a rush, I could ride my ZX14R just on the freeway and be content although I take it out into the twisties where it doesn't do too bad.

Personally, I don't think 1000cc or 1400s are too much for a beginner. You can easily start on these types of bikes with self control.
My dad always told me growing up, "1000s are like guns".
IMHO, 1000s, big liter sport bikes are bragging rights more than anything. You can never really use this kind of power on the street, without getting in huge trouble.
