This is so simple it's almost hilarious compared to some other systems that will put cables connecting lid and base, hide screws, make buttons unremoveable or have their own type of screws. It's like sony actually wanted you to be able to clean it from time to time.
The first few years of PlayStation had plastic guides for the laser, as the vents were placed poorly on the sides and bottom heat was not expelled properly causing all the plastic in the system to warm up. Once the runners sat in heat for long enough they would warp causing the movement of the laser to not be as smooth. Turning the console upside down will remove heat better and gravity will pull the laser onto the runner that has never had any pressure to warp thus making it run smoothly. A real fix is to replace the optical drive (around $15) which is really simple and easy then use the PlayStation on a lap top stand preferably the ones that raise the rear to a few desired angles, this will allow the heat to escape freely out the back without having to flip on the lid. I have done this with mine and works perfect for hours on end ✌🏼
I recently dug a GBA and PS1 out of a dumpster, and though I was able to clean the GBA with ease, this video really helped out when I couldn't remember where the open button spring went. Thanks Adam!
So I was assigned to the "History and cultural significance of video games" course as an elective in college today. I fully plan on going through your videos as a study guide!
Cool video! I picked up a PlayStation about a month ago and it was in rough shape. Took it all apart that night (literally everything taken apart, the "Open" mechanism, the lid mechanism, the laser, controller ports, and power supply cables disconnected..yeah). Was an easy fix, although getting the lid mechanism back together was a pain in the ass. Great video nonetheless! Keep it up, Adam. Your content's getting better and better, man. :D
Really great episode man! I just picked up my 6th PS1 (trying to collect all the models), and I really gotta take the time to tidy them up. My methods are pretty much exactly the same as yours - but never tried using Windex on the laser (didn’t know what that would do to the bulb). Will have to give that a go on my newest one. Thanks for sharing man - I'm sure this'll help out a ton of people!
Thank's for this man i got the exact same model PS1 you showed here and it was dew a good clean (thankfully i have never had any problem's with it like reading disk's ect)
Thank you much! I had my playstation and it was making weird noises, like the game scratching against the plastic. I cleaned it and now it's running like it's 1996 all over again!
Thanks a lot . This really helped . Now my ps1 look almost brand new . Before it was really dusty and dirty . The model I have is the more later on where on the back it doesn’t have the composite and serial port .
Thanks, Adam! I have an old ps1 I gave to my siblings that is UNBELIEVABLY dirty, Im sure this video'll come in handy! Definetly my channel of choice for any video game related videos.
is there a replacement laser kit for the original playstation? Mine has the FMV bug. Back in the day I used to adjust the bias directly to get around the issue but eventually the laser wore itself out completely.
Thanks Adam your on how to clean a Playstation has helped me I cleaned fixed refurbished and restored both of them and they work fine I own a scph 1001 and scph 5501
Excellent video. I don't have one yet, but I do plan on picking one up when I come across one for cheap. It's hard to find this stuff at resale shops. It's really all a matter of timing. I occasionally get lucky though.
Hey Adam I have a PAL PS1 that I've been trying to get it to run in the US. I've swapped out the power supply with one that I bought from Savers and also tried running it with straight up American voltage with the original power supply. In both cases the console turns on and will read PAL games as music CDs (I can hear the game's soundtrack). Putting in an NTSC game tells me to insert a correct PS1 game. I do have a modchip but it has never failed me so far. Any idea what's happening?
Hey adam, just wanted to let you know that you're my obsession, your voice breaks the silence of my house and soothes my dogs to sleep. I'm a devout follower of you, Aaron Yonda, Emre Cihangir, All the fabulous people on blame society. i've had my computer broken for about two weeks now, and going without you guys has been FUCKING HELL. But now i have all these epic videos to watch so i guess it's cool. But i've been waiting for you to do a gamerade cleaning video of a fat PS2 model, because i have one that desperately needs it. Thanks Adam for all the hard work and keep being you.
I looked for it!!! I've seen all your videos i watched them from the beginning!!!! HOW DID I MISS THAT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (thanks anyway Adam still love you) OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@AdamKoralik hey I got a question if the spindle gets gunk on it is it safe to clean it with Isopropyl Alcohol with a Q Tip cuz I can’t find anything on cleaning it online
Very nice. Reminds me of when I found my PS1. Of course it wasn't anywhere near as clean. I got it for a dollar at Goodwill and it looked like it hadn't been touched in years. There was dust, dirt and dead bugs inside of it. It took me a full day to clean it up. However, I never even thought of the Pledge till now. It gives it a very nice shine to it.
hey, does the original ps1 power cable look kinda gray? Im just asking because i found a power cable that works with ps1/ps2 and its gray but wondering if its the same one that came with the ps1 or if its from something else
Adam, would you suggest RGB scart over component for a PS2? It appears to work well for a PS1, but with the PS2 RGB options, does it give a better picture than component?
The power button on mine just started “sticking” recently after years of it working fine. It’s kinda annoying but if I close the lid with a little force it’ll fix itself and keep the lid down. I took it apart assuming it was dirty but it’s absolutely spotless on the inside. But I took the button assembly out and cleaned it and it only worked for a short time until it started sticking again. Is this a common problem with the PS1? All these years I used them and never had this issue. Any tips would be great
Just picked up a PS1 Nov. 1995 version at a yard sale yesterday for 15.00. It came with 2 red controllers, one memory card and power cords. Everything worked. Your hand moving around a lot in the screen...:-)
Lucky you you got the first model PS1 (SCPH-1001). I got an Oct.1995 model and it works. I have a laser from the Slim PS1/PSONE (2000) and its one of the most reliable lasers you can find. The 1000/Launch models were the ones that had the Overheating problems,Laser issues,Breaking down alot and more.
I'm taking the slim ps1 model apart, but I can't seem to take off the top part for some reason. Maybe it's simply my PS1, but is it different for the slim?
my ps1 was manufactured in May 2000, and in October 2013, the gripper for the disk broke off and when I flip the system upside down, the disc makes noise.
+Aura and the gamecube 2001 model had serial port 2 next to serial port 1 and it was not used neither. so nintendo stripped that port out and the digital AV out for some VERY unparticular reason....
One mod to help the original Playstation is to open up the side vents from the inside. You can do it with a dremel. You need to remove about 5mm. I remember years ago my local gameshop used to sell brass templates for routing out vent holes in the bottom chassis to match the rest. No idea how viable a solution that was.
Hi Adam, i have question about Playstation 1. What's the name of that wire, witch connects Controller ports to motherboard? 4:24 I really wanna now the wire name, cause my ps1 dosen't have that wire, ['when i was little, i threw it away] my ps1 model is SCPH-9002
hey adam on your Playstation it says 9080564 on mine it says "96" or "a6" or "ab" or "9b" not sure which but what's weird is it was written in what looks like crayon. I rubbed it and it smeared. Do you know why? do I have some sort of prototype
Actually, flipping PSX on back or side will eventually destroy laser assembly (but yes, it will help with reading problems). I don't know how to name it correctly in english, but this metal sticks that laser drives will get curved and drive will stop working. It's better to try to fix laser issues with a little screw that makes laser run more powerful.
My PS1 has stopped spinning. Or, well, not really. It starts to spin, but it's like it doesn't pick up enough speed and then gives up. Any thoughts on what the issue is? It was fine and then just started doing that. Can't play any discs on it now.
I've been wondering about these models with the composite outputs. People have been calling the audiophile unit. Does it have better DACs than other models or something? If not, I don't see how it's an audiophile model. Especially considering that a real audiophile would be using something far better than an old crusty PS1. Especially when you can find hoards of CD players with superior DAC for cheap.... Please excuse my rambling. Thanks for the video! I have yet to open one of these suckers up. Interesting to see one on the inside.
I have some disc reading problems with my PS1 Slim, would turning it around work? Sometimes it would take ages reading discs on loading screens, which results in a lot of frustration.
AdamKoralik I totally agree, when i was a child i bought this fat model, and i wasn't lucky, every week it had a problem, i exchange it for the slim model and i never had problems again. :D
Sweet video Adam! On a related note, I know that the Dreamcast's laser issues are legion, but does it also have the same issue with poor positioning? I know that my dreamcast freezes constantly on Disc one of Shenmue and flat out refuses to boot on disc three if it's right side up, but when I flipped it over in desperation, it started working flawlessly. The oddest thing is that Shenmue is my only game to struggle when the system is right side up and the discs appear to be in great condition.
See I wondered the same thing. Years ago, flipping a Dreamcast didn't seem to do anything, now it seems it actually can help. Who knows why. I think it's an issue with disc one of Shenmue actually. As that's the exact same disc I did that with too.
I know this is an old video and you probably won't read this, but just in case you do, can I use pledge on all systems, including the white PC Engine Duo-R? Also, do you know if I can use the same trick that you used on SNES to remove yellowing on the Duo-R?
+AdamKoralik adam this may be a bit out of subject but my psone slim caught a little bit of water i waited 30 minutes then turned it on it works however the display will glitch up after a minute or 2 what do you recommend i should do?
I have an xbox 360 slim without a power supply. It has a standard definition cable two controllers and two games. I have two ps3s and a ps4. I don't have a want to buy the cables necessary to hook it up. It is almost new it is 6 months old. I'm thinking of trading it for another gamecube or an original xbox tomorrow. Should I keep it or trade it?
+Adam Ziolkowski Rrgggggg guess what I found a ps1 slim missing the open button lid stuck open all the way (you couldn't close it) for 60 dollars your right they don't know prices still pissed about that one FRICK you goodwill
Don't know if anyone said this before, but to remove stickers you can heat them up with hairdryer and get rid of them very easily. P.S. I'm really loving your videos, keep them up!
I was kinda suprised that you flipped the ps1 over at the end, I have those lazer problems where it sometimes doesn't read the disc; I thought the thing was a bit worn down from being used over the years so I use an Ouya ps1 emulator to spare the actual ps1
I did this to my old PS1 a couple weeks ago but I took the dissassembly process a little further. I also removed the lid and the lid catch mechanism that's incorporated with the "open" button. These areas, especially the damper mechanism that limits the lid opening speed, have small areas where water could get trapped.
another thing that is different about that model is that the laser is in a different spot. The launch version had it in the top left corner, while the second version (I think) had it more on the right. Maybe it was because of the PS1 laser issue.
That video sure is helpful, I just wonder what might be helpful on yellowing. Especially 90's systems had their issues with that i.E. the SNES, PS1 and Dreamcast.
Thanks, AdamKoralik. Sure looks like a hard job to perform but on the other hand, it's probably worth it. As long as there are no 3D printers around for casual use, this might be the best way to go.
PSX is my fav console. So many good 2 and 4 player games! Crash Team Racing, Rampage Universal Tour Twisted Metal 4, Gran Tourismo 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3...
You seem to know a lot about PS1 maintenance. Do you by any chance have a hint about how to fix the Open button not being clicky anymore? (when pushed, it stays down, so the lid won't close. I have to fiddle with the latch on the inside to make the button pop back up and be able to close the lid) PS: nice cleaning job (and lucky you, having an extra view and comment 5 yeas after posting 😛)
I got one at goodwill for $3 and it doesn't work. I opened it up and the power supply is covered in brown crusty stuff. Should I just replace the power supply? I don't know if anything else is damaged because of some type is leak. A power supply is $10, so after that I will be $13 in to it, plus I need cords which are also around $10. Now it's $23, unless something else is wrong. I planed on selling it, and they go for around $30. After shipping and fees I pretty much break even. Should I gamble on only the power supply being broken, or just sell it as parts or not working?

Adam, I bought this PS1 fat model for Five bucks knowing that it would not read discs because the guy who sold it to me said so. I cleaned the laser and tried to play a music CD because I don't have any PS1 games, and the system sounded like a loud little remote control car. The first time, I had ot laying flat. Next, I had it on it's side and it acknowledged the disc but still could not read it. If the console would've sounded normal, I would've suspected it to be a laser malfunction. However, I think it may be the motor not being able to spin the disc correctly. What do you think?
Adam i need a suggestion i have a original Xbox,ps2, and a vectrex i need to know if there is a good console that is cheap, im am ordering the ps1 soon and i need to know if there is another one that is cheap as well for a starter
AdamKoralik thanks i have been wanting one i want the model one due to stereo sound in the front thanks for the suggestion i think you need a vectrex. they may burn a hole through your pocket because of the 400$ price tag but its worth it
Thanks man. This worked perfectly. Oh yeah and i also have an Original launch model PS1 (SCPH-1001) i wanna replace it with a Slim PSOne drive (Which is the most reliable one).
AdamKoralik Sorry for the late reply but yes a Slim PSone laser would fit. You should see two holes. There are screws inside. Just take a Philips screwdriver and just unscrew and take off the top cover and replace the Slim PSone cover and place the original black cover back on. Good tutorial vids btw.
I forgot the name of it but I believe it's a special type of tape for electronics. Mainly used to prevent shorts on the board and components if I'm not mistaken.
This is so simple it's almost hilarious compared to some other systems that will put cables connecting lid and base, hide screws, make buttons unremoveable or have their own type of screws. It's like sony actually wanted you to be able to clean it from time to time.
Gotta love how reliable certain vintage consoles are.
The first few years of PlayStation had plastic guides for the laser, as the vents were placed poorly on the sides and bottom heat was not expelled properly causing all the plastic in the system to warm up. Once the runners sat in heat for long enough they would warp causing the movement of the laser to not be as smooth. I'd suggest cleaning it, flipping those doesn't really do anything.
AdamKoralik I totally agree, when i was a child i bought this fat model, and i wasn't lucky, every week it had a problem, i exchange it for the slim model and i never had problems again. :D
Will doing a retr0bright cleaning fix discoloration on the Fat model?
+Jocaju3 Yeah, should be fine.
+AdamKoralik adam this may be a bit out of subject
but my psone slim caught a little bit of water i waited 30 minutes then turned it on
it works however the display will glitch up after a minute or 2
what do you recommend i should do?
Hi Adam i don't know if my ps1 is dirty on the inside because i know it can't read games
I got my ps1 at a goodwill brand new still factory sealed for 20 bucks.
Kyle Harrison that is cheap...
+Adam Ziolkowski Rrgggggg guess what I found a ps1 slim missing the open button lid stuck open all the way (you couldn't close it) for 60 dollars your right they don't know prices still pissed about that one FRICK you goodwill
LUCKY NEVER OPEN IT
Kyle Harrison you lucky shit...
i got one for $10
where do you get all your video games I know you get your ps1 at goodwill I used a ps1 controller to my playstation2
Do you have a video for cleaning and restoring for a ps1 slim?
+jorge zeraba I do not.
Hey Adam, between VGA and Component what would you pick ?.
is there a replacement for were you put the game on ?? like the circle that holds the games
???????????
+Juan Luna ...You'd need to buy a new one or gut another one and replace it yourself.
hey Adam, can you do a restore video on the slim ps1 please
Hey Adam do you have a video on the scph1110 joystick? I'm looking to see how to take it apart for a restore
Sorry, I do not.
@@AdamKoralik its cool Adam,I'll look more into it. Thank you tho!
Maybe the most simple console to clean? Thanx Adam again for your videos....PEACE
When I turn on my ps1 it just shows a black screen and I tried changing the cable and it wouldn’t work, any ideas on how to fix this
Great video Adam! Do you know if the laser issue was fixed in the smaller PSone redesign?
It seemed to be, those tend to be a lot more reliable.
Thanks for the info!
Hey Adam, when i play games on my ps1 the system makes a ditditditdit noise when reading disks. Is it supposed to make that noise?
Doesn't sound familiar, but who knows with those things man.
hey Adam, would you mind if you did a video on cleaning and restoring a PS2 slim model,
thanks in advance
Will the magic eraser work on a white scuffmark on a black n64
Yeah, probably.
Don't know if anyone said this before, but to remove stickers you can heat them up with hairdryer and get rid of them very easily.
P.S. I'm really loving your videos, keep them up!
Thanks!
Serge Darko you can also use WD-40
***** I Just use goo gone on most stuff. A little greasy, but if you clean the case after using it, it works well.
I was kinda suprised that you flipped the ps1 over at the end, I have those lazer problems where it sometimes doesn't read the disc; I thought the thing was a bit worn down from being used over the years so I use an Ouya ps1 emulator to spare the actual ps1
my ps1 laser spins the disc twice that stops I tried to fix it and I failed.
Omg..... Brings me back to my childhood
I did this to my old PS1 a couple weeks ago but I took the dissassembly process a little further. I also removed the lid and the lid catch mechanism that's incorporated with the "open" button. These areas, especially the damper mechanism that limits the lid opening speed, have small areas where water could get trapped.
In hindsight, I wish I had been more thorough with this one.
yes finally !!! thank you Adam :)
Thanks for watching.
another thing that is different about that model is that the laser is in a different spot. The launch version had it in the top left corner, while the second version (I think) had it more on the right. Maybe it was because of the PS1 laser issue.
Is dollar store furniture polish a good substitute for Pledge?
I haven't used it, so I can't say for sure. But I bet it'd be fine.
That video sure is helpful, I just wonder what might be helpful on yellowing.
Especially 90's systems had their issues with that i.E. the SNES, PS1 and Dreamcast.
Thanks for watching.
Here you go: Gamerade - Remove Yellow from Super Nintendo, Other Consoles, Plastics - Adam Koralik
I have to fiddle with the latch on the inside to make the button pop back up and be able to close the lid)
PS: nice cleaning job (and lucky you, having an extra view and comment 5 yeas after posting 😛)
A new power supply is not that expensive

Dam cheap :)
Oh thanks!
You're welcome :)
The Gaming Hobo | zphil123 dude its just a ps1 just buy another one
adam i'm enjoy watching in your video god bless nice talking to you tc.
Your model has a parallel port? If so the laser is near the power supply and burns out quickly
Could you ever do a handheld system clean-up
I don't trust myself to open up and clean out handhelds to be honest.
Adam i need a suggestion i have a original Xbox,ps2, and a vectrex i need to know if there is a good console that is cheap, im am ordering the ps1 soon and i need to know if there is another one that is cheap as well for a starter
Kudos on having a Vectrex.
Sega Genesis is super cheap.
AdamKoralik thanks i have been wanting one
i want the model one due to stereo sound in the front thanks for the suggestion
i think you need a vectrex. they may burn a hole through your pocket because of the 400$ price tag but its worth it
I have the model schp 5501... and its starting to go (laser lens) but still works even though its 18 years old, pretty good lifetime for a diskdrive.
Thanks man. This worked perfectly. Oh yeah and i also have an Original launch model PS1 (SCPH-1001) i wanna replace it with a Slim PSOne drive (Which is the most reliable one).
Glad I could help.
Would that mod work?
AdamKoralik Sorry for the late reply but yes a Slim PSone laser would fit. You should see two holes. There are screws inside. Just take a Philips screwdriver and just unscrew and take off the top cover and replace the Slim PSone cover and place the original black cover back on. Good tutorial vids btw.
When I opened my ps1 up there was this copper tape inside. Is it okay to remove this tape and dispose of it? What is the purpose of it being there?
if it's on the motherboard I think it is a cheaper way of rf shielding?
I forgot the name of it but I believe it's a special type of tape for electronics. Mainly used to prevent shorts on the board and components if I'm not mistaken.
Can this technique be used on controllers as well?
Yes.
