  • This is a flawed reading of a flawless short story.
When I was in college, the short story that most moved me was "Everything That Rises Must Converge," a story in "Southern Gothic" style by a woman named Flannery O'Connor. She died of lupus at a young age but lived long enough to bestow her gift of writing on the world.
From the collection that contained "Converge," I have discovered "The Lame Shall Enter First" as a middle-aged man, and I am so moved by it that I want as many people to experience it as possible.
For a short story, it's rather long. I urge you to read it, but if you cannot do so, perhaps my attempt to read it out loud will suffice. It deserves a better treatment than I can provide, but I hope that it will move you, regardless of form. Please make the time for it. Thank you.
Note: I took liberty with one word used in three different places of the story, changing it to not distract from the intensity of the story itself. I wish Miss O'Connor was able to give me her opinion.
