The best part in my opinion is the fact that the exchange student was trying to speak to them in Japanese and they ignored it lmao.
The same thing will happen in germany if you try to speak german. The people will answer in varying degrees of english instead. Because every chance to practice is an opportunity to get better.
Some bloggers say that it is quite normal: they ignore you and speak to any other japanese near you even you do speak Japanese

My brother tried to do that in Spain but the problem was he was speaking to them in Mexican Spanish so the Spanish were like "naw. Dont bother with that uncivilized language. We're just gonna speak English with you"

Since I am a vegetarian, when I bought a hamburger, I asked for a hamburger without meat.

And the clerk was like "WTF". "O...OK, no meatsu?"I tried to say no meat "Japanly".
"A...Hai, no meatsu." after that they still bring a hamburger with meat, so I gave it to my friend.
After a few years when I started to learn Japanese, I finally knew that the word that is a noun and pronounced similarly to "meatsu" means water (mizu).
SO I ACTUALLY ASKED A HAMBURGER WITHOUT WATER THAT DAY, THEY MIGHT CONSIDERED ME AS A FREAK LOL.

I went to Japan in 2010 for 3 weeks with my then Japanese bf. I tried to learn as much of the language as I could in 6 months. (Wise decision). I was amazed at the cleanliness and lack of crime! They have huge vending machines sitting in downtown Tokyo that no one breaks into. Everyone was eating a huge bowl of ramen in the afternoon. I’d only heard about sushi. I became totally addicted to Sakura scented or flavored anything. Starbucks had a Sakura hot creamy drink and cookies with that flavor.

I am currently in Japan. One thing I gotta say is, people don't exactly like it when you're running too fast for no reason. Whether its on a street, a mall, a marketplace, anywhere. I get somewhat disappointed looks when I'm just running too fast, maybe because they think I might bump into someone and hurt us both but tbh I'm used to traveling like this
