Jan, could you talk about your favorite cow (past or present) sometime. Apologies if you have already. Mine was a dominant beef cow that would lead the herd, calm the herd, etc. She had the best calf each year as well and although it's been many years ago I'm still in awe of her. She would "straighten out" the misbehaving ones and bring them in line, sometimes with just a look, as if she was saving me the grief. Most helpful partner I ever had. Hilarious.

I live in Waterloo, NY, birthday place of Memorial Day. Winter is coming. Yuk- snow squalls off both, Lk. Ontario & Lk. Erie. We are just a bit away from what is the snow belt. Snow falls in the snow belt fall in feet not inches. Hi to fellow Waterloo , midwestern folks & to the amazingly huge dairy family. You put our lg.dairies to shame. Do your neighbors hate it when you spread your tons of cow manure?

Jan, On another posting I saw something about water beds for the cows. There is minimal need for sawdust on top. ALSO - they use a yellow stuff that looks a bit like foam to clean the cows teets before milking. You use wipe rags to clean the udders and teats. Their barns and such are quite dark. Is this because of lack of lighting fixtures or the cows prefer a darker environment. You often work late at night. Is there a time when the lights in the building are off. The cows can go through a sort of regular day-night cycle? Yes, How is there a brown cow among all the black cows. If the B&W cows give white milk does the Br&W cow provide ready made chocolate? (Just kidding) I noticed something else on that channel. They have silos for their feed - I think it is the same material that you lay out in rows and cover with plastic. Why don't you use silos to store your feed? Vertical storage takes a lot less land than horizontal ples and likely has less spoilage from wet ground.
You might think about printing out a sheet on how to set up the ventilation for summer and fall. Then laminate it. Tack it on the wall. Always there no struggle.
