    I think the biggest problem with Klonoa's lack of sales was the fact that Namco NEVER advertised him outside Japan. All he got in the west were bad magazine ads and, for the wii remake, a REALLY bad commercial that never even aired on TV. They never even put it up on the Wii Channel, which is supposed to have every single Wii game, including shovel ware. I've heard that the same problem exists with the Tales series, too. Nobody bought it because nobody knew about it.

      Very good point. It's pretty amazing that we got as many of the games as we did.

      They did make a commercial for the Wii remake but..
      It was barely aired and.. well..
      Its horrible, the commercial was so terrible
      EDIT: Oh wait, didn't notice that part mention that somehow
      Klonoa really deserves better

    I LOVE Klonoa for the PS1, I've played it regularly since launch, now on my PSP. It's a solid, amazing little gem

    It's nice to see folks like yourself talk about their love of this game and series. It's one of my personal favorites, and the sequel is the first game I popped into my PlayStation 2, which was essentially the reason I picked up the system in the first place! I have the volleyball game, and while it's pretty basic, it's still good fun, and the fantastic Klonoa music and art style is intact.
    I hope you don't see this as "nitpicking," but the "mile" part of Phantomile is pronounced the same way as the unit of distance...just thought I'd let you know, in case there was any confusion about it.
    Nice retrospective/review--and congrats on Retroware submission of the week!

      @mylifeingaming  Před 10 lety +4

      Thanks so much - I used to always pronounce it like "Fanto-Mile" but felt like I was the one pronouncing it incorrectly. When I decided to make a video on it, I went with how I assumed it was really supposed to be pronounced - I guess it's nice to know my original pronunciation was correct, but sucks its incorrect in this video. Thanks again for the kind words!

      No problem, I hope to see something else from you guys soon! The way you pronounce Phantomile sounds French and dare I say, fancy...I kind of like it better that way, to be honest, ha ha.

    Truly inspirational, Klonoa is one of those games who can't be easily imitated, is really unique and wonderful, full of magic and awesome mechanics, it's a shame here in México was impossible to find a copy of the game at the time (even now is very hard).
    Excellent video, instant sub!

  • @ChaseFace
    @ChaseFace Před 10 lety +7

    This is in my top 5 PS1 games of all time. And I appreciate you mentioning how it was one of the saddest endings of all time. I seriously cry every time I see it.
    Klonoa fills me with nostalgia and passion. That Moon Kingdom, the shimmery stardust that trickles off the untouched crystal path with a glimmering echo, the confusion and emotion I felt upon learning Huepoe's true identity, the tears I shed when Grandpa's life was snatched away from you, and the burning rage that ensued.
    This was a really heartfelt tribute. Thanks for making it, Coury. :)

    I rented this game as a kid, and totally forgot about it until a few years ago. It was amazing - but very difficult.
    Interestingly enough, in Ridge Racer Type 4, there is a track called "Phantomile"

    • @olevet75
      @olevet75 Před rokem

      Also has Pac-Man balloons along the track, klonoa's logo for car livery, klonoa's hat has Pac-Man logo too. Namco's classics references across their classic games

    Lovely video.. several steps above the usual CZcams videogame video in both presentation and script. I always thought it was pronounced Fanto-Mile though!

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  Před 10 lety +1

      Yeah, thats one thing I've learned with this video. Trust your gut - I used to always call it Fanto-Mile, but felt I was pronouncing it wrong - so I changed it here because I thought it was the way it was "supposed" to be pronounced. Turns out...I was right the first time. Ah well...

    Good video Coury :3 I loooooove Klonoa, it will always be one of my favourite early PSX rentals with a friend, so many great memories. So glad for the Wii version and the originals rerelease on PSN so I could get back into it. Really looking forward to playing 2 someday too ^^

    Ahhh I discovered this gem of a series a few years back when the remake came out. Managed to snag the second game and gba games before getting the remake after seeing references to him from a youtube channel I watched awhile back. I was entranced immediately pretty much and I now hold each game as unsellable gems for my taste. They've all managed to captivate me with their creative worlds, memorable characters and just all around good mix of fun and sorrow. A shame it just was a bit too cute for the western consumer to appreciate in a time when the big thing was moving to more realism. Though for what it's worth for me, even if it never gets another game, I'm still pretty happy we got as many as we did. It still did get plenty of support for some time, which was more you could say for certain other platformers for its time.

    Good video, and I will for sure have to keep an eye out for the Wii version, but it's going for more then I want to pay for it on Ebay at the moment. Also I did not know this game even came out for the Wii, and I'm actually a fan of the Wii who likes too seek out gems for it.

    I loved this video and I immediately felt like getting the original PS1 version. Then I looked on Amazon and thought "Oh, it's one of those Playstation games...". I'm fine with getting the original on PSN, but given how expensive the game has gotten, would the physical version still be worth getting?

    There was a point in the late 90s where Namco temporarily overtook Nintendo as my fav game dev, its all thanks to Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3 and this freaking increadible Gem!

  • @LinkEX

    2:15 I was just wondering why you were calling him a cat and not a rabbit, then I checked the Klonoa Wiki and read this:
    _"There is much speculation as to what Klonoa actually is, though he most closely resembles a rabbit, cat or dog. The latter is probably the most fitting description, as Namco has stated in various interviews that though he is primarily a fantasy character, they mostly consider him a cat with long ears."_
    So he could be officially considered a feline after all.

    Question, Coury: if Namco had used the sharper, more adult redesign for Klonoa Wii and doing that had actually increased sales by such a significant amount that more Klonoa games were bankrolled, what would you think?

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  Před 9 lety +4

      [Coury] Well, I'd be happy for more games in the series. If that's what clicked with people I guess that'd be that. I'd be ok with it because the gameplay is really amazing, anyway. But I'd at least always hope for a unlockable original skin like what the last Bionic Commando did.
