    ○ Introduction to the work
An influential contemporary of George Frideric Handel in London was the Italian violinist and composer Francesco Geminiani. In 1725 he was commissioned by a Masonic society to rework the first six op. 5 solo sonatas of his former teacher Corelli into concerti grossi. Financing by notable nobles and dedication to the English king contributed to the great success of this edition in 1726. Three years later Geminiani also presented the remaining sonatas, including No. 12 with the famous Follia variations. The follia (Ital. folly), known since 1500 as a Spanish dance style, served as a basis for improvisation for numerous composers. Among them, Arcangelo Corelli was probably the most prominent author of virtuoso variations on the Follia theme. In Geminiani's arrangement, Corelli's original remains largely untouched, but the interplay between tutti and solo passages brings hidden charms to light.
