Damage to Japanese Maples by Squirrels

I'm in Dallas. My 15+ year old tree is even worse. Caught the squirrels in the process of chewing. I'm using the tree wrap material to protect and heal. Also using peppermint and other repellants. What do you think about what I'm doing?

You are doing the right thing. You can also use cayenne pepper as a deterrent.
