I have very thick hair (lucky, I guess in a way) so watching your method is great. Thanks. I bought clippers first time during the pan. Thanks. Very concise for my desired result. Very easy to follow. Very NICE video.
Its been 8 months since I first saw this video and I've cut my own hair ever since. The first few times were a bit tricky, but now I finally have a feel for it. I come back and watch it for a refresher each time. Has to be the most helpful video on CZcams! Thank you!!!
This comment is amazing, I don't expect it to work first time but I too hope to learn it in the long run 👍
Just discovered this guy tonight on a tutorial on how to trim a beard. I think I’ll start with that before my hair
@@hampelmann5804 Hey, thank you so much! Best of luck!
@@dcfolyffe882 Smart! The funny thing, just as he mentions in the video, you do start to get a feel for the awkward positions - like clipping the back of your neck. Its weird the first few times. Just cut my hair 3 days ago again. I have a routine now where I grab newspapers and drape them over the sink in the bathroom to speed up the clean up. The key part is blending the clipped sides and back with the top cut part. Small cuts/trim is a smart way to go at first. 👍

Best tutorial ever! For people who want to try this but are scared of messing up. This is what worked for me : Go to your barber first, get a good haircut. After that use the tips in this video to touch up your already good hair cut every few days. It makes it A LOT easier and less scary, and after a while you'll get the hang of it and it gets much easier. I'm rocking the same haircut I walked out the barbershop with 3 months ago.

GREAT video! I’m an older guy (63) and started cutting my own hair over 30 years ago. All my friends thought I was nuts even giving it a try. I used the same method you use but at first I didn’t use the progressively smaller guards - I think I just used a 5 and then trimmed around my ears and lower back. It took me a few months to feel comfortable, and eventually stopped using the mirror when doing the back. You are so right about getting the feel for doing this. It becomes very comfortable just like you said. Cutting your own hair not only saves you money, but a lot of time as well! And you can tidy up anytime. I’ve tried to get my son to do it but he won’t even give it a try. By the dude, you got some great hair there!

2024 and I still come back to this once or twice a year for a refresher course. And I still cut my own hair as a result. I'll likely never pay for a cut again, and hopefully never have to endure the frustration of a bad cut ever again as well. I've had too many of those throughout my life!

So, I've done this twice because of lockdown and it really worked quite well. I honestly don't know why I've been paying so much money the past 30 years when this works out so well. I've paid money for worse haircuts!
Just think about the movie Cast Away (Tom Hanks). If you have to, you are capable to do many things you never thought you would. The - probably only - good thing in this pandemic is that we realize how efficient / creative we can be and also it leads us to do things differently in the future to save money, to produce less waste, etc.
Back to your - and our - spendings: 20-30 years ago we did not have CZcams tutorials. That's why... :)

This is the best haircut tutorial I've seen. I appreciate you explaining the open and closed guards. You keep it simple. Part your hair. Use a 4 guard to shave up to your part and use a lower guard for each inch you go down to your ears. Thanks dude.
Thanks.
@VinceFS, totally agree. That was what I wasn't sure about, how to go from the very short hair to the longer hair (fading, I believe he called it?). I think even I can do this - going to order some trimmers today! 👍
The best self-haircut video I've seen so far! I keep coming back just to help reinforce my memory on how to do this cut as I have similar hair as you! Great job and it's true that it gets a lot easier the more you do it with constant repetition.
I’ve cut my hair for the first time yesterday, using a lot of your advice, and I’m so satisfied! Thank you!!
This is the best beginners' hair cutting tutorial on YT, and I've been through hundreds. He starts with a #4 straight up to blend the top, which anyone can do, and then slowly transitions down to a #1. My barber does the same. It is hard to mess up #2-4 since no skin is visible, just be careful with the smaller guards. Most other tutorials here have you starting from a bald line and working up, or playing with the taper lever 4-5 times during the fade (half way open, 3/4 open, etc.), or something else ridiculous.
Agree totally with your observations! This guy nails it for the ordinary guy
I agree. It was simple to understand and he provided reasons for doing what he did. When I get my clippers today, this video is my guide.
"Hundreds" , you sure didn't want your hair fucked up lol!
@skOsH By all means if you have the experience you can definitely start from the bottom up. What tends to happen is people will take the initial guideline too far up already messing up the cut and its very hard to fix that. Its just easier to work from the top down, IMO.

Great video! Excellent haircut! That's basically the way I cut my own hair. I've been doing it since the late 1970s. I figure I've saved at least $15,000.00 in today's dollars (figuring on a haircut every 3 weeks). I began cutting my own hair because I usually had to trim up a bit after getting a haircut. Finally, I said, "Why am I paying somebody to cut my hair when I have to cut it afterwards anyway." So, I haven't visited a barber since the early 1980s.
Another way I save money is when shaving. I use Dawn dishwashing/hand soap liquid, which is oily enough to give a smooth shave. I use quality shavers, like Gillette Mach 3 or Bic Hybrid 3, and get a month's shaves off a single cartridge without any nicks. No expensive shaving cream or gel for me.

good instructions. his emphasis on taking time is very important, especially when doing the final touches at the end. He emphasized that the direction in the mirror is opposite but keep that in mind when you are aligning the clipper head to match the hairline. on my first trim, i aligned and trimmed at the same time. problem was that as i rotated, it went in the opposite direction so i had to do it over.

Just started cutting my own hair to save money. This tutorial helped greatly. Thank you.
I've been doing my haircut very similar to this for over 20 years. But, you did give me help with the blending idea. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Thanks man, you gave me the confidence to cut my own hair and it actually came out pretty good. You rock.
Can i ask, how bad was your first haircut? taking into consideration it was your first time without any practice. Do you think i could do this and turn up in the office without anyone noticing?¿
Don’t fool us here 😂. From your profile pic, it seems you never had any haircuts all your life 😂
After tip, my last simple haircut cost $34! Thanks to inflation! My next haircut will be done by myself. If I screw it up, I’ll just buzz my head and wear a hat for two weeks and try again!
😂
update?
This video has saved me hundreds of dollars from the barber during COVID. Ever since I learned this, I haven’t gone to the barber shop for more than 2 years!! Thanks !!
Looks great. Been cutting my own hair since covid and it has looked ok. You added the details I was missing. Well explained and shown. Great job!
