  • Playing around with open source finite element package Elmer. Natural convection is simulated in Elmer by iteratively solving the Heat equation and Navier-Stokes equations. The room is heated at below the window with a heater emitting 500 W/m^2. The room is cooled by the window and the external wall which is kept at 15 and 0 degrees Celsius respectively. The room temerature is initially at 20 degrees. The simulation is real time.
Elmer is developed by the IT Center for Science Ltd which is administered by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. The website of the project can be found at www.csc.fi/engl....

Cool. Elmer can handle 3D as well so no problem there. I posted a link in the description.

@PhilippoChannel I don't know. I set the viscosity to a realistic value for air at room temperature if I remember correctly. Radiation is not taken into account and there is no conduction through the walls. I dont think the neglection of radiation is a big problem.

by any chance, are you open to question or are you active on other platforms e.g. elmer forum ?

@PhilippoChannel The simulation is 2D, for sake of simplicity. In a sense it is accurate because the external wall in my old apartment (of witch this is a model) consisted mostly of windows and heaters. The world is 3D and the eddies will be 3D. In this case I am sure the eddies will have 3D characteristics. As I said above: this was mainly a demonstration of the flexibility of the Elmer solver. And also, I am by no means an expert on CFD.

radiation does not heats air directly as it is a two molecule gas (O2+N2). radiation heats up room walls and you can take into account by setting proper boundary conditions (time and space dependent temperature)

@davidosterberg hey.. how about this.. the CFD is it 2d or 3d? Because the window and heater won't likely go the length of the room (in the dimension not shown).
That would probably promote more turbulence, which would appear more natural.

@edinbox there is a tutorial, in Swedish, at durotec.se/2011/01/naturlig-konvektion-elmer-och-open-source-cfd/. The Elmer case file is available at the bottom and Google translate should work for the blog post.

Hi, sadly the link seems to not be available. Is it available elsewhere?

I see, tks. I put a bulb(100W) in the center of the rectangular box (made of paper). and I am trying to know about the temperature distribution in the box. I need to solve the navier stoke equation, but I can not. Do you have good way to get the solutions?

It took about 20 hours on a intel i7 processor. But i dont think the simulation is very accurate. It was more of a test of the possibilities

    Hi,David Österberg
I am a Science Teacher and an amateur science lover.
Recently I am studying the temperature distribution in
a rectangular box. Basically I need a software to simulate
the heat transfer phenomena, 3D is better but 2D is
also good for me since I am just in the preliminary study.
Where do you get the "open source finite element package Elmer"?
    Would you please tell me?

where I can find information about natural convention inside enclosure ???
    what you do recommend

Hi David, I know you did this study nearly 3 years ago, but I was wondering if you would be able to help me out a bit. I'm an architecture student so this type of study would be extremely useful but I'm also quite out of my depth. I've been having mixed success with the Elmer tutorials but haven't found anything like this. Any chance you could help me figure out how you did this?

I have installed the software and got Elmer GUI and Elmer Post.
But I don't really know how to run the program. Could you please just tell me? It's good to start from your 2D model. Please tell me how to set up the factors to run the 2D model.

what it likely doesnt take into account is radiation..
    but..
perhaps interms of accuracy... do you think the air would be less viscous than it appears...?
this sort of seems too "fluid"

David can you please post and share the simulation from elmer? I need a simulation similiar to yours but I'm struggling to produce it.
