Dr. Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 85 scientific papers and 14 books. He is a leading researcher into anomalous phenomena and was named among the top 100 Global Thought Leaders for 2013. He studied biology and biochemistry at Cambridge University where he earned his Ph.D., followed by a fellowship at Harvard where he spent a year studying philosophy and history.
In this session, we discuss Rupert’s latest work on scientific approaches to spirituality, why they work, how they improve psychological wellbeing, and how you can use them - even if you do not identify with any kind of religion.

Dr Sheldrake's courage has always had my respect. He's kept on talking and researching, even though he's been harshly criticized. I am so glad to see he's continued doing interviews.

In Vedanta, the english term "mind", is understood as being of at least 4 categories, 1.) Buddhi - the intellect, not only confined to the brain but understood as working all over the body. 2.) Manas - memory, not only confined to the brain, but considered to work all over the body - f.E. as highly intelligent genetic coding.. 3.) Ahankara - gives you that sense of identity. Once your ahankara takes on an identity, your intellect functions only in that context and becomes enslaved of a bunch of random identifications with what is believed to be the "truth" - dogmatic. 4.) Chitta - the most important of them all - Chitta is mind without memory - pure universal intelligence. This intelligence is like the cosmic intelligence - simply there in everything (morphic fields). Everything happens because of that - When people touch this dimension of the mind, it is called in yoga. Also understood as Chit Shakti, it is about touching the dimension of the mind that is pure intelligence of universal consciousness, unaffected by memory, unsullied by identification. It is beyond ahankara, beyond buddhi, beyond judgment, beyond divisions, it is simply present in every thing every where, animated or unanimated, not limited by any boundary, just like the intelligence of existence that makes everything happen, as if by itself. Who understands the golden ratio, the 3, 6, 9 phenomena, the fibonacci numbers, the flower of life and so on understands what is represented by the idea of chit shakti! Highly interesting as well as enlightening stuff...!

Agree entirely with Rupert's thoughts and considerations on the altered state of consciousness in sport. I played football (soccer) for three decades. Sometimes I played three times a week in fast paced 7-a-side games. I performed at my best when there wasn't anytime to think just act and it was when my mind was in this state that 'i' produced some action that was almost as perfect in terms of the right place and time to do them. When I was really in the zone I could score goals with the ease of shelling peas. It was when I had too much time that thoughts would come in and the results were often embarrassing, if only to myself.
Exactly this, flow state, allowing your subconscious to do what it needs to do and not getting in the way of it has incredible results.
I had vivid dreams when I was fasting. It felt so incredible. Great that he mentioned that.
It's nice to see Rupert still active and speaking better than ever, I grew up listening to him and Terence. My old youtube account I lost access to has some old Terence videos I cut up about 15 years ago, some have hundreds of thousands of view. Listening to this takes me back to the good old days, when life was simpler.
One of these days, I hope to talk with Rupert. A friend of mine in York has met with his wife. We are doing trials here in the states to measure raising cognition with specific sound frequencies.
Truly one of the most brilliant minds of this generation. He transcends material reductionist framework to understand our true consciousness. Amazing insight about the Near death experience as the death and rebirth. Amazing. Amazing!

Dr Sheldrake mentioned the more person-centric approaches that he suggested are associated with some 'new age' approaches. By comparing them to approaches that support caring for others, he might have implied that the person-centric approaches do not advocate compassion, empathy and caring for others. I have come across some of those cultures/approaches. They tend to be more on the extreme. I would refer to them perhaps as hedonistic cults. Many psycho-spiritual and self help approaches focus on individual empowerment because the individual is the only person truly in charge of themselves. When we are living in destructive conditions and do not have the energy, money, etc to engage in changing the external life, we can change the way we engage with ourselves and others.The locus of control is internal. Engaging in the self healing and self transformation practices is then a way of using the power we have in the now moment - to bring positive aspects, healing, empathy etc into the energy of the present moment to our thoughts, feelings and behaviour and it definitely does not exclude empathy, caring etc for others. In fact it enhances this aspect of our being.
Our spiritual perspective splits consciousness or unites it. All spiritual practises are either dualistic or unified and reinforce human material or spiritual existence.
Law was supposed to protect us from ourselves and others!!! That was the basis for freedom under law... all of life on earth in harmony! 🧡💚

I have been bornd in IRAN and for 60 year I hear this kind of reasone that try to teach people religus belive with scientific reasone they who try this speechs are very educated and speak very nice
I appreciate the sharing of all that gathered knowledge and wisdom. I would be very careful to not desire for myself, or for any living creature, the need to use any drug (or food for that matter) as a spiritual facilitator. We have magnificent systems that are capable of self balance and healing and of creating spiritual evolution without the need for drugs.
Basically I agree with this very common point of view, but to suggest not to use a torch even in very dark and treacherous unknown terrain, just to get a better, clearer overview, a method which has been adopted over millennia by shamans, druids, priests, mystics, is not a good idea! But I could agree that any such attempt should be only undertaken under supervision of an experienced person, who if necessary can act as a guide!
Not one way fits all … some will need no over sight and naturally find their way just fine … some would do better with guides in human forms to help them along or in drug form or spiritual form .. some wish not to be guided or get any where and happy as is.
We can’t subscribe training wheels for all in world .. and shouldn’t want all to be on training wheels in world .. we lose something don’t you feel when try to say all shouldn’t or should do this or that ? Be as this or that ? We are so much more than this ^^ or that after all
Yes, although not to discount the benefit of drugs (for want of another word because of the stigma of judgement that instinctively now goes with it) may provide along the way. To consider everything physical is a tool as a means to an end, not to become an end in itself, is resolving oneself from polarizing perception, being the hindrance or limitation of spiritual growth.
@@cassidyvogt7015 I do not think I said anything about should and should'nt? I live in one of the most violent countries in the world. I suspect that 99% of the violence is connected with alcohol and drug use - and often, generations of it. Which actually means generations of psychodynamic dysfunction with adults modelling that the main coping mechanism is alcohol and drug use. I am suggesting that we live in culture, globally that have unconsciously and consciously encouraged drug and alcohol use not just as a salve, a band-aid in times of stress, but as an essential way of life, when in fact we have all sorts of emotional, mental and psycho-social skills to learn in place of reactive drug and alcohol use, in place of any excessive type of behaviour. Health is about utilzing the natural capacities of body and spirit and with the right psycho-dynamic and psycho-spiritual facilitation, we do not need toxins in our bodies to achieve anything. I also see that psycho-spiritual development is something that is earned through engaging in awareness practices that need to be done consciously, step by step. Otherwise what occurs for many, is some kind of psychedelic experience that no doubt has wonderful awareness practices but because the vehicle (the person's mind-body matrix) has not been prepared through steady, solid psycho-social and psycho-spiritual practices, their insights and revelations do not lead to anything save for temporary reactions. I am aware that most people I have met who have journeyed to engage in the use of 'spiritual' drugs and ceremonies, have already been drug and alcohol users. I have met about 3 people who have not been previous users. Sadly, I had no follow up with the latter three so I have no idea how they responded then or later. This is a world of choice, so there is no should or should not - we can kill, hurt ourselves and others every day, and we can drug ourselves to death. Everyone has that choice. Within the range of choices is the right to choose to utilize our whole bodies in ways that evolve us without the use of poison.

This is such an important conversation to have right now. We shouldn't take spiritualism as a threat to science - in fact, both can build off of each other and find and help the world in so many different and helpful ways if the general ethos changes. I cannot express how sad it makes me that modern science still scoffs at spiritualism. The amount we could help the world by comprehending spiritual energy and using it for the benefit of humanity would be to put it lightly insane. All scientists should watch this video!

Exactly -- tuning out of the mind is the whole point, but I notice the Church likes to call thinking deeply "meditation" so they are not disenfranchised from the topic. Sheldrake probably picked up the idea in church, along with a few other silly ideas.

I think that spiritual practices on their own are not what religion is all about, certainly not monotheistic religion. What a person believes has a powerful effect on behavior and serve as the base for behavior. "As a man thinks in his heart, so he is" is a key biblical principle. Jesus says lustful thoughts are as the sin of adultery. Western rationalism and materialism and sadly much of western Christianity had during the " Enlightenment" put all its eggs in the
Cerebral process and mostly excluded spirituality. This is clearly wrong but to swing the pendulum all the way to the other side is equally as problematic. We have thrown out the baby with the bath water so so often, let's stop doing that. The Chriatian creed especially the Apiatles and Nicean are incredibly relevant today for genuine Christian expression and growth.

One thing I will say that he got wrong was how he perceives people who follow religion.. I come from a Christian background, went to church my whole life growing up.. I can tell you from life experience and analyzing people.. the bishops and pastors may not view their religion as being literal.. but the people(masses) they are preaching to believe these stories as if they are completely factual stories. That snake literally talked to Adam and Eve and corrupted them.. that’s the problem with religion, the masses think in order to make it to heaven and not go to hell, I have to believe these things are true.
Even all the knowledge the scientists have about nature and our reality they still don't know s***. thanks to today's modern science with what they know to be fact has helped proven that I am dead on True spirituality. The universe works like a giant quantum computer and it was absolutely pre-programmed to do exactly what you are seeing now. That is literally how sacred this planet and life truly is. 👁

The most scientific approach you can make to spirituality is to talk to someone who understands how to design complex systems using distributed programming. One is the loneliest number you can cling to for creative inspiration, contrary to most of the cults humanity has created in the last couple ages to the universal applause of the de-heretic'ed cult throng. Sheep and fish slappers need to admit they were wronged, and admit that bull is not shit after all. Aquarians - go back to the tank, you're not ready to be more than the floppy disks of discarded technology sold to developing universes begging for enlightenment from self-proclaimed Elohim fakirs.

Imagine what you might experience, be, and then strive to experience, be, it. You will learn along the way. Don't be so small. Keep an open mind. A spacious mind. Don't close down options a priori. Yes, a spirituality, a search, a welcoming, beyond the mere intellect. Question your assumptions.
I´m happy to listen to Rupert on scientific matters, but since he worships Jehovah, a stone-age tribal war god, his ideas concerning spirituality are just a load of bollocks. You can´t really explore spirituality unless you realise that, as Max Planck said, matter is derivative of consciousness.
Being a brilliant and respected biologist unfortunately gives him a platform to talk about things which he really does not understand, because a background in reductionist materialism is not a suitable basis for exploring the numinous.

I too admire his honesty and willingness to ask questions most of academe would rather ignore, he makes a valuable contribution.
He does however work within the paradigm which has consciousness as the product of physical matter, whereas I see it the other way round. If Rupert broadened his research in an Easterly direction a little more, and availed himself of more ancient wisdom, I feel he would do even better.
Science ignores anything it can´t put in a test tube or measure, when the answers it seeks are found elsewhere.
Just my opinion, no better than your own.

This quote came from Stephen Hawking. "In 1985, I attended a conference on cosmology at the Vatican in Rome. The gathering of scientists had an audience with Pope John Paul II. He told us that it was okay to study the workings of the universe, but we should not ask questions about its origin, for that was the work of God."
None of this thinking has helped their originating countries. Sheldrakes progress is due to the fact that he is an anglo-saxon.
