The Chaconne for solo violin has been arranged for other instruments by many composers, including Mendelssohn, Brahms and Stokowski. William Thomas Best was the first to arrange it for organ, followed by among others Henri Messerer, Wilhelm Middelschulte and John Cook. Their arrangements reflect the instruments they knew well. Best’s piece honours the original score and works well on earlier English romantic organs, while Messerer’s arrangement asks for a symphonic Cavaille-Coll organ. Although the character of the piece on organ is very different from the original work for violin, Bach’s own practice of arranging music, his affinity with both violin and organ, and the appropriateness of the chaconne form on an organ might legitimize an arrangement for organ.
However, it proved difficult to find a sufficient arrangement for the large Dutch, mechanical organs. That is why I made my own arrangement of the Bach Chaconne, with the organs of the Westerkerk in Amsterdam and the Bavo in Haarlem in mind. This arrangement is based on mainly the work of Best and Cook and adapted and arranged in a way that makes it both a piece of great melancholy as well as variety and virtuosity. The end result has clear roots in the 19th century practice of arranging, but aims above all at making the organ sound on its best.

I've heard many renditions of this impressive piece by Bach . But this particular performance is amongst the top organists. One that stands out is Ian Tracy, organist of Liverpool Cathedral who played this piece off organ music on that massive instrument , a must listen too !

I have the versions by W T Best and Middleschulte. I have heard several renditions of the Messerer. All are fine and yet somehow they all miss something. I think your arrangement is the best I’ve come across. Is the score available for purchase?

Bach blijft mooi, ook door een romantische bril! Heel goed gedaan, al geef ik zelf de voorkeur aan een transcriptie die meer inzicht geeft in de structuur van het werk zoals die voor het strijkinstrument in de baroktijd is gecomponeerd en de schoonheid daarvan blootlegt (Gustav Leonhardt Barenreiter BA11820).
Dank! De versie van Leonhardt biedt inderdaad weer een heel ander perspectief, zeer de moeite. Stiekem denk ik dan wel dat als barokversie het viool-origineel het meest tot zijn recht komt, met wat meer dynamische mogelijkheden.
@@IddovdGiessen Inderdaad mis je dan al snel de vele mogelijkheden die een strijkinstrument wel heeft. Of je moet, zoals Leonhardt dat heel goed kon, met een heel subtiel toucher te werk gaan. De goldbergvariaties zijn (afgezien van de benodigde techniek)
veel makkelijker op barokke wijze op orgel te vertolken.
@@johanblok5482 daar was Leonhardt dan inderdaad ook een meester in!
