- kerryskamp.com Want to discover what is one of my favorite chords? Watch this lesson. Hi, my name is Kerry 2 Smooth! I am a guitarist, producer, and instructor from Los Angeles, California. I desire to help as many people as I possibly can unlock their full potential as a guitar player. CZcams is one of my favorite ways to do so.
In this R&B guitar tutorial, I'm going to teach you my favorite chord - the minor 11 in the 6th string position. I learned this chord while in the army. It has a soft and subtle feel to it. Once I started using it, it quickly became my favorite chord!
I'm going to give you a guitar exercise you can use to learn this chord in the key of F. I’ll use this chord for the ii and iii in the Key of F Major. The chord progression I’m doing is ii-iii-vi. Instead of doing the minor 7, I’m using the minor 11. Then I challenge you to interchange the minor 7 and the minor 11 within the same chord progression.

Can you do a tutorial for the application of triads and inversions to theory/songwriting
What does "minor 11 shape in the six string position" mean? Do you mean minor 11 chord with the root on the 6th string? It's kinda throwing me off to hear the word "shape" used outside of the context of the CAGED system.
Pio I have lesson on my site that cover that. Kerryskamp.com
I like that chord I always played it different
You're an excellent teacher, I love the way you break things down. But unless I missed something, I don't know what you mean when you say playing in the sixth string position. ???? Please explain what you mean. Thank you for what you do.
That minor 11 chord shap is going to be a staple in chord vocabulary! Thanks, Kerry!
Can you do D’Angelo- When We Get By!? I feel like your style would compliment it very well. Also it’d make a dope lesson
KERRRRRYYY my guitar playing has grown leaps and bounds since learning with you bro Rasta love stay bless brother great lesson.
Excellent lesson Kerry! Learned about the minor 11th chord in Kerry’s Kamp along with the Bill Withers song Lovey Day which I absolutely love playing! Also when I leaned about the number system on your site as well. That said thanks for the well explained clear and concise “focused” lesson which really reinforced my understanding of it. Also thanks for the chord charts, that’s always a plus as well. Much respect and continued success!
That wammy bar really takes it to another level
This lesson is a real gem, the type of thing you can go and immediately add to lots and lots of songs. Real nice to add that typical RnB richness to the chord vocab. THX K2S!
I'm amazed on how much I learn in just a couple of minutes and for it to be simple and not too intimidating to learn. Thank you Kerry! Love the way you teach too!
Love your teaching style! Been learning alot from these videos thank you!
Thank you Kerry! You are an excellent musician and phenomenal teacher! You stated you didn’t want to feel overwhelmed. That is so true about how we all feel while trying to learn. I love these videos and how you break down for free the levels of expertise!!
Keep on keepin on!
Amazing teacher! keep it up. You're helping me progress a lot!
More good stuff. I like the way that there's often other bits and pieces that you play while showing these points that are worth picking up on too. Cheers.
In the last 6 months Kerry has given my playing a boost. Here for example, I had the minor 11 chord as a root for the minor pentatonic (6 chord). Now I have it as 2 and 3 chord in a major scale. Sounding sweet 🌴
What do you mean by minor pentatonic (6chord)??
love this chord, thank you man!
As usual, sir. I am mind blown. This lesson on the minor 11th shape in the 6th string position, has changed my life. You rock, bro. All the time. Every time. Big ups
Love your sound amazing.. peace and blessings to you my brother thanks for sharing
Bro my name is Clarence and I’m from Gary Indiana now live in Minneapolis Minnesota, you play and teach very well! I’m relearning the guitar because of you. Thank you
That is awesome! Keep it going! We're here every Tuesday!
Excellent class, instructions and presentation.
Profound Video! Fantastic job on this video.
I will use this chord. Thanks for the insight.
Very nice! I love the soft color of that m11
Love the way you’re teaching!❤
Love your work!!! Keep it up buddy!
Love the way you’re teaching!
I love the way you r teaching for real. loving it man for real
These chords sound beautiful together, thank you 😁
This is so inspiering! thanks so much for sharing!!
I love the way you teach. I'd like to see you create a complete piece over 3 videos, planning - progressions, chord choice, mood choice and feel. The practice - the development of the idea, alterations and additions made, and the final piece plus breakdown - you know, that "2Smooth" magic! 90 second piece, so we can really see how to explore and develop a complete idea beyond phrases. So we can see in context how licks and phrases fit within a given framework. Hope that makes sense. Great work 👏
Thanks Kerry love these videos, even when I don't have my guitar to play along with. Having something to work towards is important to me.
Goosebumps! Beautiful
I love what you're doing. I could noodle for hours with this.
Really enjoy the chord choice s n feels you use….thank you
Thanks for sharing Maestro 🔥
True, I’ve always seen you use the minor eleven, I don’t get used to using it! I need to get it into my muscle memory! You make it sound 2smooth!
Thank you for your service. Thanks for the lesson and I am substituting the M11 on everything now.
Loving it man!
So good! Thank you.
Thanks Kerry this lesson was very timely for me as I'm trying to get out of the rut of playing the same chord forms over again. Keep them coming mate cause you're way too smooth ;}
Loved the video , thanks for the images of the chords it really helps.
chilix vibe good deal!
Excellent instruction, finding my way back to guitar,
Youre the best thanks!!!!!! I love this flavor 💙
You're doing just fine Kerry 😀. I am new to your channel but I also follow a few other RnB "how to" channels so that's why I can say that. I especially like your emphasis on feel and doing only what's right for the song without over complicating things. Also you actually sound like the guitar parts I hear on songs rather than just giving a technical lesson.
This is Awesome! and those fills are boss !!
You are awesome!!!!
I like the way you're teaching! Keep it up man you're such a wonderful person
Great video!
to be honest, one of the best channels on whole utube for guitar players, no dumb talk just straight knowledge & examples, great and tasty playing btw ,
I'm catching on... That's a beautiful chord progression. Thanks 💪
Dammit, you've done it again! Thx my man! Ur videos, my axe! Let's get it!
Thank you so much Kerry, love those slick moves you play in passing, I'd love to know more of that to spice up my passing chords
I appreciate you I learned that cord in a John Mayer song and only knew how to use it in that John Mayer song now it makes a lot more sense
Love your teaching techniques
Your teaching is just so super 😊
Great lesson. I've used a similar chord just without the 11th, I'll have to mix this shape into my playing
Great video & chord
You drop all these dope licks when you teach. It would dope to learn a bunch of those licks!
I have learn a lot from you and my playing has change.thanks to you
Kerry you're a legend man
This is gold my friend, thank you! What a Beautiful voicing 🙏♥️🙌
Thank you so much
EXCELLENT job as always please would you do a video on using guitar effects particularly reverb and how you use it.
Thank you
This right here is why I am subscribed to you thank you
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and insight.
Random Button Pusher good deal!!
Subscribed good shit bro! And thanks!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Belize.
Love the minor 11 as well bro. I like to bounce between it a minor 9th, 11th and 6th. I come a cross them learning to play some Brazilian music. Keep it up the good work. Enjoy your playing and teaching. Thanks for your service. Fellow vet. I did 3 years all in Germany and also learn stuff from other players I met.
Dig it! Thank you
Definitely one of my favorite “go to” chords....along with the minor 9th chord, minor 11th has a “sympathetic” voicing to it...definitely more DYNAMIC and DARK in my opinion....THANX 4 SHARING THIS CLIP....!!
Minor 9 I think is brighter than minor 7 in my opinion!
Nice vid. The minor 7th shape from which your min 11 is taken will also give a softer sound. I tend to use that shape more anyway, but they all have their spots.
Very nice work, Kerry, thanks so much. I learned a lot from this lesson. The diagrams as you play are super helpful, so could you please include them when you play your fills, along with an explanation from you about why you're using them? That would add a lot and be really beneficial. Thanks!
Love your playin style,I play nothin but metal but man your tone is amazing and definitely opened my eyes more to being more open to new playing styles so I'm gonna be cruisin your channel now for info for more progressive style of playing! Good stuff man!!
I use that alot myself you teach some cool things I enjoy your free lessons I been playing for 48 years I play with a old school Funk Band here in Denver Colorado thanks for the video ☮️ Peace.
man im loving these lesson keep going
More to come!
Great teaching bro - always dropping nuggets 👌
love your sound
Thanks!
I caught that K2S. Keep 'em coming cause I'm smiling from ear to ear. Lol
You have a very unique style...very cool😎
That’s a great chord. I learned that plus many others from Mickey Baker’s book that was published in the 50s
Good deal. I never knew that was a minor 11th Ive always played it and knew it was minor by the way it sounded. Consequently I knew what that was without actually knowing what it is. Really good way to have it all tie in together. Good video.
amazing stuff
MisterTracks thx!
i like how you teach.
Thank you good tips
You're welcome! I appreciate you checking out the video!
I like that!
Nice chords.
🔥🔥
Thanks Bro !!!
Man... Love your teaching & all yo lessons👍. I'm a slow slow learner.. but I got to say you very much appreciated. Seems to be whenever I'm down.. I always seem to pull-up a leeson from you that brings me up. ( & I've been a 3yrs beginner.. Learning from you when time allows me too. Now this Virus stuff happening... I would love to play good & smooth to bring softness & calming joy to people's heart with smooth guitar playing. I'ma keep practicing..
I've been wanting to join your camp.. but time & money has me on pause/ but one day I'll join. I do have a couple of your lessons on Vime that I need to go back too for tuning-up. It was overwhelming when I purchased it.. but little by little I'm learning & understanding more. I couldn't just jump in it as I assumed. I just turned 50 in November & my brain & everything is slowly....(changing is the best way I can explain it.) Anyway.. I've been commenting with you over the years...& just saying.. Thanks once again..& God Bless You & your Family!👍🙏
Anthony, I hear ya on that 50 thing. Not too cool. Hey, do what we can do !! Make things worse, last year, fell 25ft off utility pole during an ice storm up in the mountains of Pa. Own artificial ribcage now and I know my head took a major rattle. Played decades ago and decided to get back into it since work is history. Sorry'bout the bio. Peace. Enjoy our guitars.
I really like them
Kerry I love that minor 11 chord as well. Sometimes I have issues transitioning from one chord to the minor, but I'm getting it down. Oh by the way, I was in the US Army as well. Good stuff!!
Sounds beautiful. In a band situation, you can use different inversions higher up on the fretboard because there's a bass player.
Very cool video. Always great to learn new voicings. I came to the sudden realization the other day that an add 9 chord is also the m11 chord a minor third down minus the root. So Bb add9= Gm11.
Cool! Got to experiment with that minor 11 shape! I was Army too! 82 - 95 👍🏾👍🏾
I like your r and b plus gospel music cords.
Just discovered the channel, dude you are an awesome instructor. Thank you
Thank you!
Awesome awesome! My man! I don't have a guitar but I do have a guitarlele it's a 6 stringed hybrid of a guiatr and ukulele tuned ADGCEA I'm sure this these chord shapes will work on it but they will be a fourth higher . Can you do a video on how to use diminished chords and cool scales to use when playing R&B. Thank you
Solid my dude!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 hug from 🇧🇷
Nice, really like the m11 voicings, i immediately and very smoothly use them in one of my own soul inspired songs to replace some m7's.
Too smooth? Nah... "2 Smooth!"
Tnx, keep them voicings coming!
Love your CZcams intro bro. Do you have a full version of it available?
