His run is certainly a competitor for one of the best of all time. But his interview? No question, the best interview of all time.
IMHO it was on par with NesTea or sOs when winning their first GSL
his run was amazing, with all the opponents he had to overcome.
He was talking about how he did it in a stream after.
I remember he was saying after Reynor had a 2-0 lead on him, he took a break to the restroom clam himself down. He was telling himself just play the game normally nothing to lose.
On the other hand, he said Reynor wasn't clam, Reynor was in like hyper mode.
During the stream on breaking down what happened in all his matches. He kept saying he was lucky and god was on his side.
Like game 2 or 3 with Maru, when Maru did a reaper cheese rush. He said if Maru send scv up with his first reaper instead of waiting for 2 reapers, he would've lost right there.
However, he said he did the exact build that able to defense the 2 reapers rush instead.
In his recent stream, Oliveira also announced that all the earnings due to this championship including commercial advertisement and products will be donated to the charity in China. He said he has two dreams - one is the world championship and another one is to build a charity primary school in the poor region of China. Fans like us joked that the school could be named as Ghost Academy but he said he wanted to name it as Star school for Starcraft. What a man!

Noticed how he's terrible at English but still manage to say a lot of interesting points, then as soon as he switched to Chinese, his words hits you in the heart.
The speech is emotional partly because he talking in language foreign to him and he uses simple english and it comes up as very genuine, simple and direct. You can see his win slowly sink in on him as the interviews goes along and remember the hardwork he has done and start breakdown in tears. As an audience you can feel it and that what i think is so power and different.
or he's just being honest, which can explain why his Chinese speech is even more emotional
Smix was exceptional in that moment, in that interview. No one else could have handled the emotions like her. She didn't repress it, she went along with it but without fully losing control. And she was smiling and moved and genuinely happy for Ollie like many, most, all of the casters (I suppose all, I know that i was!)

I don't even play starcraft2, and I cried listening to him. Truly inspirational in all fields where everyone is trying their best just to prove to themselves, that they are a champion by just not giving up!

Oliveira's story will never get old. I can't get enough of how incredible this IEM has been for him and for all of us fans. We're all normal people that hope to one day achieve something great. Just look at Oliveira!
good video. Gotta say, i overlooked Time for so long -- i really didnt realize he spoke much english even. But my God, what story -- what a talent.
I loved watching his run and I'm crying all over again watching his speech. And I must say, he is the most humble high-performer I've maybe ever seen.
But, I have to say the kind of wishful thinking "anyone can achieve their dream if they try hard enough" is simply not true. Just mathematically, only 1 person can be world champion even when hundreds or thousands are fighting for it. No matter how hard everyone works, only 1 person can ever win. Additional factors like genetics, talent, support systems all determine your ability to win as well. Almost no one has the luxury of 12 hours of free time a day to practice for 8 years.
I think what he's trying to say is he is no better than the rest of us. And I think that's a good message. He is very humble and saying normal people can achieve a lot if they try hard. And I think that's true. But that doesn't mean anyone can achieve anything. And I think promising people results based on hard work is generally a lie and hard work often does not end up in results. Work as hard as you want, but only a small number of people will ever get that promotion or that trophy. You can't control your circumstances or your results, only your process. I know it's a "downer" thing to say, but I take another perspective - you don't have to prove you are better than others to feel good or validated. You are good enough as you are. By all means, work hard and achieve what you can, but you shouldn't have to beat others to feel good about yourself and your work and your progress.
SC2 is and will forever be the best esport. His speech makes me cry every time
thank you so much for making this video. we CN sc players wanted this kind of title for over 20 years and this year we lost the blizzard CN server, this is almost like a killing blow to all chinese players who love blizzard games. and SC environment wasn't that great in China. I Mean this Championship give us hope and made hundred of thousands chinese SC players and fans dreams come true. GUYS Never stop believing yourself. this is the beauty of eSports. Hope he can inspire more and more players to chase their dreams. Really hope sc2 communities grow bigger and bigger.
The last 5 to 10 seconds on the last game against Maru. That was such a beautiful move from Oliveira. And that speech. I cried when I saw him live. And I will cry every single time I see a recording of it. So human, so emotional and so, so relatable.
I watched a live stream from Oliveira after he returned to China. He basically reviewed all the matches after the group stage. He is just so humble and real, kept saying that his opponents are much stronger than what presented in the games, and he was just having a better mental status. You didn't read too much into it, and thank you for making this video.

You can search for it, as for translation someone did a full translation on reddit. I can understand Chinese but his accent is hard for me to understand, especially the chinese terms they use for sc2.

Very good video, I like what you mentioned and I also had the same feeling that during the interview, Oliverira was in the perspective of us who are normal players playing the game and love the game. Especially as a Chinese fan, I played sc1 following my older cousin since 6 years old. I love this game so much, I always dreamed about maybe one day china could win a championship. Although we had many talented players in SC1 such as Legend, F91, and Pj who even made second place in WCG before, it just feels like it is impossible to get a champion. He just made our dream come true, it even feels like that we as fans in china win a championship by ourselves. Can't stop crying every time I watch his interview cause it feels like he is talking for us, he is talking just like a normal boy who is in deep love with this game! Congraz and thank you very much Oliveira for making my dream come true!

Imagine had he beat Ragnarock? Ragnarock, HeroMarine, Reynor, Hero and Maru? Had he done that, there would be no doubt this was the best run any player has ever had in a SC2 Tournament ever. But not beating Ragnarock made his win so much more unexpected and special. The adversity and determination made his success unforgettable. Congrats again Oliveira.

Gotta love Oliveira now. Still can't believe how he just went completely super saiyan and beat all the best players in the world in this tournament in such a convincing manner. Reminds me of Serral's early domination and how unexpected it was at the time. I didn't watch IEM till now and had it spoiled that he won against maru, but I assumed he must have had a somewhat easy path and just been unstoppable in one matchup, TvT. Which still would have been very impressive but would have left us feeling like he got pretty lucky and wondering what might have been. Totally wrong, he beat the 1st/2nd best zerg in the world and the best protoss in the world on his way to beating the best terran in the world. Couldn't have been better. Truly a historic run and a beautiful interview and story to go with it. This is what we all want to see. Regardless of what he does in the future he is now immortalized in the history of sc2 and in sc2 fans hearts.
This win was absolutely deserved. Go watch the games against herO. They were amazing. This underdog story could have a manga.

@7:00, I think what he means is that the most important preparation he did was to prepare mentally. Telling himself the most important thing for him at the moment is calming down. It's important to not thinking to much about wining or losing the game when nothing has happened. I'm very impressed when he said that he was trying to give up after the 0-6 but actually he keep up his great work, which is very hard.
Watching his run, I really felt like a sports anime actually happening, I needed a day or two to actually believe this happened.
I love this recap and your sharing about it, feel the same - greatest upset tournament in SC2 history, and I saw all tournaments :D only stardust comes close to me, taking home dreamhack bakc in the days.

In other news, following this year's IEM Katowice, maru, herO and Reynor have reportedly decided to change their names to Silva, Dos Santos and Pereira respectively. Serral is apparently considering "Serreira", but it is as of now an unconfirmed rumour.

My favorite moment in esports so far. This moment meant a lot to me and I am so thankful to be a part of the passionate community that sustains these efforts. Brilliant play from Oliveira and then to show such a display of character. A truly inspiring moment where competition brought out the best of this collective human effort. (according to current reports) it is entirely due to someone being jerk inside Blizzard, that cause current situation with Blizzard games in China. When Blizzard said they care about the well-beings of Chinese players, their actions did not comply.

i actually watched his steam ( in Chinese ) where he review and comment on his game during this journey. In summary : 1. he lost so many times so he’s quiet confident at disadvantage situations. 2. When he’s 0-2 reynor he told himself don’t worry about win or lose . Just play another game on big screen. 3. With the games goes on he become more and more confident. Where he thinks if he plays good and steady he can beat even maru

Your video is interesting but I think there is some overread or misread (due to some cultural or community difference)
1. The usage of "You" instead of "I" is just common in Chinese. He mainly wants to tell that a man's past achievement is not that important. Practice and preparation makes you win next one.
2. His speech mainly focuses on three things.
2.1 His hardworking: 12-15 hours a day, is what a Korean players normally spent under ProLeague system. Nowadays Korean goes more slack, while Time still practices hard and finally catch up with them.
2.2 His (and his father's) belief in himself. The Chinese SC2 community is passionate but tough as well. There is no new players coming out, so fans put all hopes on TIME. (A dream for 25 years) When TIME got 0-6 in Atlanta last year, his situation was really bad. Desperation and frustration from both fans and himself turned on him, and news about the end of CN server came at the same time. So he decided that if he did not perform well in IEM, he would just retire.
2.3 His mentality shift after he is in RO8. He was facing the best players, his performs (entering RO8) was already satisfied by both himself and fans, and there is nothing to lose. He can then enjoy every moment on the stage. While other players may underestimate him a bit, and get tilted when he fight back.
Well when I review what I wrote above, I feel that it is very close to what you said in the video, but I believe you missed something important since you are not fully familiar to our community. But thank you for your video anyway
Entirely fair! I mention in the video I may have overanalyzed through a language barrier but I still think the overall sentiment of his speech was touching. At the end of the day, the video is more on what his victory means to me than the literal interpretation of what he said so I stand by the video. But your point is entirely valid.
@@feardragon64 Even in Chinese, the word you doesn't mean I. He indeed wants to encourage many normal people like himself never to give up. It is a culture called 'positive energy', if you look at Jack Ma's previous speech he also did a lot of that, like I can do it, so do you.

I recall in the year of 2019, there was this repeater expand build in TvT that often being used by pro gamers, you will get blind countered if you are lower league player by using this build but that doesn't happen in the highest level, however I did wonder that what if pro gamer does the same blind counter to other pro gamers because they are very much familiar many builds, aren't they?

It does help he comes from a wealthy family that allows him to just practice and play StarCraft 10+ hours a day to let him work towards this. This is why North America will never have as many esports champions. Once you turn 18 it's "get out and start earning your right to be alive"
I did really love his games, his emotions, and the speech itself, too. But saying everybody can achieve everything simply is not true. There are different aspects to performance: Yes, there is practice, but there also are biological factors like, on a very basic level, having functional hands. Being able to see properly. Basically, not being impaired or having a severe health limitation.
And luck, also (not taking anything away from him he worked really really hard) his family is actually quite well off and could support him to go on this journey
I think the idea is that he put in 12 hours a day for 8 years. If you actually look, he obviously had some natural talent and skill but we all do in something or some space, we then need to put in the time the effort and interest to react the top of the field we are naturally good at.
