It took Barca so long because the old European championship only had the winners of each country and Real Madrid dominated Spain
Only 1 person that matters on that Notts F*rest team; the manager, Brian Clough
czcams.com/video/VvofQ5mfqns/video.html
There are only a handful of managers who have been English champions with two different teams. Brian Clough stands head and shoulders above all of them because he found both Derby and Nottingham Forest in the second division and lead them both to championships, and in the case of Forest to the European Cup.
If you have never heard the name "Brian Clough" then you have to react to some of his interviews from the 1970s. To say that the man was a character would be an understatement. Oh and the lad could play a bit as well, 251 goals in 274 games playing in the 1950s before his career was cut short by injury.

The Celtic team from that year has also received much recognition. They have become known as the Lisbon Lions and are widely considered the greatest team in Celtic's history. All of Celtic's players were born within a 30-mile radius of Glasgow.
Plus also the first British team to win the Cup as well
and we almost won in 1970 as well
also they were the first team to ever win a treble right

Nottingham Forest got promoted to Division 1 (now the premier league) in 1977 & in their first ever season won the league title. Not been done since, then they won the European Cup twice. Brian Clough was the manager & just created one of the best teams of all time.
In 1985 English teams got banned from all European competitions after Liverpool fans attacked Juventus fans in Heysel stadium causing a wall to collapse, several died. English teams were let back in in 1990 but Liverpool had to wait until 1992.
🤔 Everton had missed out that time, had a good team
It's Heysel not Hansel. Incidentally Brussels, the city where the now demolished Heysel stadium was, hasn't hosted a European Cup Final since. The 1985 final was a truly dreadful tragedy and one of the darkest days in European football. English clubs were forbidden from taking part in all European competition for 5 years. They were allowed back in the 90/91 season.......when Man It's won the now defunct European Cup Winners Cup (a competition featuring the domestic cup winners of all the European countries).
@@robtyman4281 That piece of crap stadium should never have hosted that final.

You're right. The city is called Hamburg. "Hamburger Sportverein" just means Hamburgs sports club. So the "er" at the end just means that the club is from Hamburg. So just a little mistake due to translation😅
Paul Lambert on Dortmund '97 team. He was the first British player to win the Champions League on a non-British club.
Before that Kevin keegan did it with hamburg but that was the European cup

In 56 and 59 Stade De Reims were runners up. Won loads of leagues and cups in France too. Now 14th in Ligue 1 and most people are unaware they were the PSG of their time.
English clubs were banned from Europe from 1985-1990 (approx)
You must remember that teams had to win their major league title to compete in the European cup together with the previous winners, which was the only way countries could have 2 teams in the tournament
Ahhh the good old days when Forest won trophies. NFFC forever. You Reds!!!!!
And now you’re back where you belong being shit again 🙂
Well they got the Panthers.

The team that came close to winning on several occasions but just missed out, losing two of them in the final minutes and one on penalties is Atletico de Madrid, losing to Bayern Munich in 1974, and Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016. Of the teams that have won it, Benfica and Juventus have lost it a tonne of times.
Yea bayern and benfica 5 times Juve 7 times
You should look at the winners of the other old european competitions: cup winners cup, inter cities fairs cup, intertoto cup

FCSB is Steaua Bucharest, they've been playing a second final in 1989 against AC Milan.
Good video :) easy thing to remember is Europe used to be a far more even playing field before the money arrived. Pains me to say it as a Gers fans but Celtic won a European cup with players from their local area. That’s how it used to be and why these winners appear random.
04:37 They used to be called Steua Bucuresti (not sure about the spelling), but some complications in recent years (I think it's something to do with copyright... I know HITC Sevens has made a video on it), they now go by FCSB.
Mate for an American your football knowledge is awesome!! I salute you:) come on Chelsea!!!!
It's been going since 1956!!!!!! It's been round for ever jeesus!!!!!? This is hilarious 🤣🤣😂🤣🤣
The format of the European cup before '92 give the opportunity to teams like Red Star and Steaua Bucurest to win the trophy..if you have a good team and be lucky it was easy to reach the final back then...
Or the quality of European football overall was better before sky and the likes killed the smaller nations with their amount of investment into the bigger leagues?
And uefa letting even 4th placed teams in at first through qualifications and then with secured spots so the smaller leagues have to go through even 4 qualifying rounds just to get in the group stage so that teams like Chelsea, Sevilla, Milan and Wolfsburg are in and not Red Star, Rangers,Olympiakos or Malmö and that leads to the big ones getting bigger and the smaller struggling to compete so not only they get a secured spot but it's almost certain that they will reach the knockouts. It's basically becoming European Super League since it's so rare for a smaller team to go far. Instead they get dropped to Europa League or Conference now in hope of success but then you hear stuff like who cares about these but it's stupid because that's where the lower teams from the top leagues should be and not in the Champions League
Could you please do this with the FA Cup and/or the English Football First Division/Premier League?
Nottingham Forrest was the first club to get relegated to the 3rd division having previously won a European championship not sure if it’s happened to any other clubs since

Manchester United would have won the 1958 European Cup if the Munich disaster didn’t happen. Nottingham Forest were managed by Brian Clough known as Ol’ Big Head he had Gary Birtles (he won two European Cups with Forest) in the team who went on to play for Manchester United, Forest’s local rivals Notts County (they are the oldest football club in England formed in 1862 they play at Meadow Lane, they are currently in The National league) who are just across the River Trent from The County Ground Forests ground and finished his career at my local team Grimsby Town.
That Celtic team was the first to win a treble. When you think of the big treble winners like Bayern, Barca, Inter Milan, Man Utd. You wouldn’t expect it to be Celtic to win one first.
Celtic 1967 team was a great achievement. Up against the heavy favourites Inter Milan in the final with their team of who were superstars at the time. Celtic entire squad were all local lads born within 30 mile radius of Celtic Park in Glasgow. Went 1-0 down in the final and came back to win 2-1 with one of the most amazing displays of attacking football ever seen (for those days). The famous Lisbon Lions won in the end and captain (late) Billy McNeill, nicknamed Cesar, now has a statue outside Celtic Park with the him lifting the European Cup trophy. Fascinating story. Watch the documentary “Glasgow 1967; The Lisbon Lions”. It’s on CZcams. Great story.
Celtic was the first British team to win the European cup the Lisbon lions all the players were born in 30 miles from Celtic park
The biggest factor in this was the Hysel stadium disaster in 1985. Due to the behaviour of English fans in Europe at the time compounded by that disaster that cost the lives of many fans, English teams were banned from all European competition until the early 90s.
This shifted the balance of power in Europe because English teams had been dominant in Europe in the early 80s and the Italian league especially benefitted from the movement of many top players. Even England’s World Cup golden boot winning striker Gary Lineker moved from English football to Barcelona.

Yep I remember watching it as a 6 year old, a much unfancied Steaua beat Barcelona on penalties in Seville. Really talented striker Marius Lakatus.
Try the fa cup one
Not REALLY true that Champions League was started in 1956
It is a continuation of a straight knockout tournament simply called "the European Cup" (each knockout round was 2 legs, Home and Away)
Then - in the 1990s, the group stage was added, and it was branded The Champions League
European football has changed much over the years, back then the amount of foreign talent you could include was limited so you had to rely mostly on local talent. After that big clubs can snatch any talent as long as it has an EU Passport. Changes to the format as well made it so the teams you can see at the top very limited. But hey, at least the football is still top level
Marseille I believe had their win in controversy because of match fixing I believe.
@MrThunderbird1111 Where did you hear that? I knew the match-fixing scandal in Ligue 1 but when I looked it up there were no questions of match-fixing in the UCL.

Do the premier league winners
Do this version of the Europa League
The club I support loyally (FC Nantes in France), have made it to the Champions League twice in recent memory. For context, unless PSG have since taken us over, we are the third most successful club in French history, and yet we haven't won a trophy this millennium. Our last league title was the 1998/1999 season, leading us to be in the UCL for the 1999/2000 season, in which we reached the SEMI-FINALS! Our second showing in 2002 (or was it 2004?) was slightly less impressive, as we finished bottom of our group... And we've never been back since.
And you now know Celtic from the Scottish League was the first british team ever to win the European Cup.
The list is overall a great reflection on which teams dominated european football throughout time, except for the 80s when freaky flukes happened all the time, and late 80s to early 90s, say 1988 to 1995, which should be all AC Milan complete dominance. That was the greatest Milan ever. Marseille and Red Star had formidable teams though, just like that Ajax '95 team that, truly and finally, killed Milan.
Back in the day chelsea fans will tell you as well as leeds fans the European Cup was heavily bent
4:42 that club is steaua bucharest
But they changed their name into FCSB
It should say Hamburg because the name Hamburger Sport Verein translates to Hamburg's Sports Club
Much easier for English teams to win pre 1993. Liverpool were playing Irish teams in quarter finals etc. There was also a foreign player rule 1993-1997 which prevented the great Man Utd side with cantona dominating. Love your vids
SC Fotbal Club FCSB were formerly Steaua Bucharest the army team of Bucharest they were forced to change their name to their current name in 2017
Oh, could tell you so many things... The 'league' part of the competition name is a secondary format to the original straight knockout round format. After winning and defending the title in '77 and '78, Liverpool (the holders, who automatically got into the next year's competition) were drawn in the first round against Nottingham Forest, who proceeded to beat them and go on to win it twice.
Following the Heysal Stadium disaster (Standard Liege's ground - Belgium) when Liverpool lost 1-0 to Juventus after a delayed start to the game (maybe the 1985 final), English teams were banned from European club competitions for 10 years. Over 90 Juve fans died as the ancient (and widely condemned as a chosen venue for such a matchup) stadium proved unable to cope with the predominantly English hooligan element. Parts of the stadium's stands collapsed following crushes as hooligans attacked opposition (Italian) fans. It wouldn't be until 1999 (Man Utd) that another English team would finally lift the famous trophy.
Watch I believe in miracles to see about the Nottingham Forest story
I’m not a Forrest fan but love that! Love Clough too!! Fav manager who isn’t from my team I support

You need to check out Brian Clough to know why Nottingham Forest won the European Cup twice.
He almost did it with Derby 🐏 before
FCSB is Steuea Bucharest
The FA cup is more than twice as old as the Champions League. This year it will celebrate its 150th anniversary.
Steaua Bucharest was the Romanian team. Won against Barcelona, who missed all four of their penalties in the shootout after their final was drawn. I believe a young Pep Guardiola was one of the ball-boys on the day. It was before Hagi's time though, I don't think they really had any international superstar players. If memory serves their best player was their sweeper, who later played for the Red Star team that also won the European Cup.
That Red Star team was actually decently rich in talent, though the incoming Yugoslav wars did for their chances of prolonged success. An exciting team who produced a miserably dull final against OM (who, surprisingly were also an exciting team at the time otherwise).
Miodrag Belodedici was the name of the sweeper. Hardly a household name but he was well-respected at the time I believe.
Obviously Real dominated those first five tournaments but you asked if there was any worthy challengers and as a United fan I've always found this interesting, basically in 1958 it was widely assumed that Manchester United would win the European cup (we'd been knocked out by Real in either the semis or the quarters the year before in '57, I can't remember which but it was apparently a tough match up) but after the Munich air disaster in '58 the team lost a lot of incredible players (many said Duncan Edwards could become one of the all time greats) and ended up going out in the semis. Real Madrid actually offered United the trophy as they were considered to be worthy winners but of course they turned it down like anyone would! As an extra factvEngland probably would have had a good chance at the world cup that year, too!
The reason Leeds United play in white despite having a blue and yellow badge is because in the 60’s under Don Revie we were emulating Real Madrid of the 50’s
Stuck ever since. Mighty Whites. LUFC.

Nottingham Forest were managed by Brian Clough so it wasn't surprising that they were European champions, although Malmo (Sweden) defended for 90 minutes against Forest and made no attempt to attack. I think their plan so go for a penalty shootout.

Back in European cup days only one team from each country qualified. Then uefa bastardised the whole thing. Lol

Remember English clubs were banned from European competition from 1985 to 1991 because of the Heysel incident when 40 Juventus fans died after Liverpool and Juventus fans rioted and a wall collapsed Juventus actually won the match 1-0
And a year later while they were banned it happened again this time in an FA Cup match, don’t act as if this ban wasn’t warranted
Yup. The FA semi between Liverpool and Everton at the Hillsborough stadium. Sheffield Wednesday's 'massive' neutral stadium. Game was stopped and canceled. Brought an end to the fencing off of the stands from the pitch in the upper divisions (itself brought in owing to hooliganism encroaching onto pitches/pitch invasions), and the introduction of all-seater stadiums.
Leeds won it in 1975 btw
No they did not, they lost the final to Bayern Munich, got close though. Great victory in the Barcelona tie.
The biggest club to never win the EC1/CL is Atletico Madrid. They lost 3 finals in 73/74 against Bayern what was played over 2 games since the first final was 1-1 after 120 minutes of play and in that time they did not use penalties in the EC1. And of course the two recent finals against their city rivals Real. The biggest losers of CL finals are Juventus they lost 7 out of 9 finals. And they won their second in 95/96 against Ajax after penalties while they were using doping which came to light about 10 years later. Yet the win remains in the books.
I didn’t know about the doping, I had heard of the Parma case but not Juventus. I wonder how widespread the cheating was throughout Italy and Europe? Looking back most Italian teams of that time were ultra fit.
