I was cabin crew on 747s, BA between 1974 and 1978 and flew the Heathrow-Nairobi-Johannesburg route many times (in those days it was always from Heathrow). I always hated the trip because each sector was so long and the aircraft always full. Bloody hard work. We had to transit for fuel in Frankfurt, Germany, then overnight in Nairobi before picking up the incoming flight from Heathrow, the following day. Then we took it to Joburg. Of course these days they do the whole thing in one go. I remember one day, arriving at the airport to pick up the incoming flight to continue down to Joburg and saw the engineer from the incoming flight (the one we were going to take over) talking to his counterpart who had just brought the plane in. Turns out the nose wheel light on the cockpit indicated that the nose wheel wasn't fully locked - even though the 747 had landed safely twenty minutes before. They 'guessed' that it was just the indicator light malfunctioning, so the captain asked us whether or not we were willing to take off with this unresolved problem. We said that we were willing (idiots .. but I was only 21 and my brain wasn't fully formed yet). Thing is, with Nairobi, the aircraft is always PACKED as it sets out for Joburg, the ruway is short, and the air is thin due to the heat and the altitude of the airport. Which means .... you don't have much wriggle room if the nose wheel did collapse when hurtling down the runway. Anyway, we took off OK .. and landed OK in Joburg. But thinking about this crazy guy on the flight deck is chilling. In the 1970s we had a lot of highjacking, and we had had training on how to deal with that (which didn't amount to much other than "be nice to the hijackers, but not TOO nice" (we Brits!!) and the new ruling was that all cockpit doors would be strengthened with steel and impossible to open from the outside. Quite why, in 2000 the flight deck door was open and only one crew member present is beyond me. It's not as though terrorism has gone away, and in fact it's now much worse.

The guy was "unstable"? Well, that's an understatement, thank goodness the flight crew were able to stop this guy, and most importantly, I'm glad he wasn't successful in crashing the aircraft. It's also incredible that several people filed law suits against British Airways, instead of thanking the flight crew for their actions to bring the 747 under control and preventing it from falling out of the sky in a stall.

With Americans , it is ALL about THE MONEY. Otoh they , the Yanks in the Lawsuit, expected to be flown to Nairobi in a safe and efficient manner. Clearly that did not happen. What is really unfair is there is class action by US citizens and it is settled and then all the rest get to pick up the crumbs. Many of the others on the flight will never b e able to fly again through fear yet they get a fraction of the compensation of the Yanks. .. go figure.

One thing that always stands out to me is how irresponsible companies and its crew are up to the point something goes terribly wrong. Do you really need an incident like this to happen before you put in the appropriate protocol to prevent it? And as a crew, do you really need company protocol to tell you to not leave the flight deck with at least two people?
