    Nice to see Ray Reardon on the list he's an outstanding snooker player. His safety play is excellent and his break building is equally as good. He didn't dominate snooker the way he did in the 1970s. He came close to winning the world snooker title in 1982 but he was burnt out.

      Id personally have John Higgins above Steve Davis and Ray, won more events in a much more difficult era
      when you look at the people higgins beat to become world champion the likes of Mark Selby in 07, Shaun Murphy in 09 and Judd in 2011. Not to mention his 3 year run where he made the finals of the crucible that to me in more impressive than beating a Joe Johnson or a John Parrot.

    Great list, Robertson or Trump might be there one day but they need more achievements. If you say some of the old players perform worse than some of the newer, you must understand that the game has evolved too. If you are best of your time, it is difficult to become much better If no one challenges you. Compare a different sport, back in the day in football scores like 10-5 were common. If you score two goals per game in such an era, you are probably still a worse scorer than one who scores 1 goal per game while common end result is 2-1.

      It is also easier to become a skilled player nowadays than it was in the past. Internet gives you a chance to learn from others, tv too, but it is more limited. Before games were even televised, only way you could learn was on your own and having natural talent and instinct. So learning has come easier. 80s players had it easier than 70s, 90s easier than 80s. But the true revolution has come because of internet and CZcams, where there are hundreds of channels showing professionals play and even hundreds more that are trying to teach you to play, and it is all free to watch as many times you want.

      Better, yet both have one world title each while the others have 6, 3, 2 & 6. Standard of break building? Yes, but every player scores heavily these days & most don't win anything because they have loser mentalities & zero tactical/safety ability-which is why Davis was still in the top 16 at 50 & beating Higgins when he was pushing 53. The cloths have got finer & finer which is why the endless centuries & so many maximums have been made this century. If those players had those cloths back in the 1970's & 1980's they would have been knocking in century after century as well, instead they had to play on thick cloths.

Who knows what he might have achieved if his health was stable too.

    • @honestchris7472
      @honestchris7472 Před rokem

      When Joe and Fred Davis were at the top of their game, the competition was very limited because not many people played the game seriously, plus there were no overseas players. Joe Davis especially was brilliant in his day but I don`t think that he would have figured against today's players, his years as a champion are not recognised against Hendry of O`Sullivan for those reasons and we don`t know how today`s players would have coped with the old tables and balls but I suspect that they would master it easily.

    • @davidsmith5523
      @davidsmith5523 Před rokem

      @@honestchris7472 your comnent is odd. For several reasons. One you are willing yo dismiss the older players because a comparison in not applicable but conclude that modern players "would be able to master their conditions easily. Which is a comparison. Additionally we play a single person at a time. Not the whole field in a competition. The world championship is not a Round Robin event. So the competition was as fierce then as it is now. Plus some matches were the best of 145 frames. So the endurance required to win was huge. Furthermore to suggest that players were not serious seems an incredible claim to make in context. Joe Davis knew that Billiards, the Premier game in the mid twenties to early 1930s was doomed as a way for him to make a living due to the prodigious talent of Walter Lindrum. So he switched his attention to Snooker, a game he knew Walter did not like or respect. So Joe was determined to make snooker popular enough to keep playing it professionally. So much so that in 1927 he bought the trophy we see each year at the Crucible out of his winnings for that first World Snooker championship. So for me if we are not comparing eras, let's not devalue those early eras by surmiding that modern players would dominate or excellent in those eras. We just do not know for sure. Improvements in lighting, under the table heating, balls, tips, cloth, and the frequency and comparative shortness of matches have all had a huge impact on the way the game can be played.

    • @sashajasper497
      @sashajasper497 Před rokem

      @@honestchris7472 Good points, but there were some overseas players from Australia, Canada and the USA competing in their day. Also I don;t think the modern players would have mastered the old conditions easily. They would have to completely change their cue actions for starters to cope with the heavy cloths and balls. The conditions today are completely different to back then. Also, players like Fred and Joe were also incredible Billiard players as well as snooker and would have had the temperament and a massive shot knowledge to go up levels to match it with the modern players IMHO. I think if they were playing in their prime in this era and had adjusted to the modern game and table conditions that you would most likely see them in the top 16.

    • @honestchris7472
      @honestchris7472 Před rokem

      @@sashajasper497 I am not saying that the modern players of today could go and play well straight away, they would need to adapt of course but I am certain that they would have done so. I cant find enough information to know how many foreign player entered the world tournaments the Joe won but there were only two foreign players to compete in the finals, Clark_McConachy and Horace Lindrum and they played in a snooker hall holding about 45 people. It is an entirely different game today and I doubt that Joe Davis would have even figured. That being said, he was certainly the greatest of his day but as I said, the competition was very small.

    As much as I liked Spencer, Reardon & A.Higgins. No way are they anywhere near the best top ten players ever. They'd struggle to get on the tour nowadays

      And how dreadful Selby et al might look if they had to play with the standard of balls, slower cloths and smaller pockets Spencer Reardon and Higgins were playing with. Context is everything when considering these kinds of lists.

      Paddy Alex Higgins is one of the most naturally talented and gifted snooker players of all time. Everyone who understands snooker knows that come on man haha. He just had a lot of problems on the table. He was too good. You don’t just win two worldies 10 years apart if ur no good. 10 years apart! He just didn’t have his shit together. He’s the second most naturally talented after Ronnie. He was unreal. The real deal.

      Laughable-anybody can get on the tour these days, like the women players & most of them do nothing. They pot lots of balls but have zero safety/tactical ability or will to win. Reardon made a 90 something break last year pushing 90 years old.
      The tour is only strong today because of the players from the 1990's & Trump-they are ones setting the high standards. The rest are too average to mediocre to do anything & are happy to wallow in the thirties to fifties & make a decent living. Most of them could not even lace the boots of those three.

    • @daveborder7751
      @daveborder7751 Před rokem +1

      @MoanyOldBustard The old pockets were larger yes, but there was the problem of balls coming back up after being potted due to the way they were cut. You used to see it a lot in the 1970's & 1980's until they made a template in 1990. You had to be a lot more careful with how you potted back then & Reardon's positional play on those old cloths was insane.

      I think the point is that yes the standard today is higher but, as in every endeavour that standard has been raised by standing on the shoulders of those that came before like Spencer, Reardon and Alex. If they had been born in an age with modern training methods and availibility of tournaments would they be competitive today? Probably but who really knows. They have to be assessed in context.

      Hendry was strong against his gang. Then he became a "punching bag" for Ronnie, Murphy and especially Selby. Against Higgins and against Williams it was "pace to paw". If he had faced Robertson in a row, he would have been crushed.

      @@ianwilliamson2980, so my dear, in the confrontation - Ronnie vs Hendry, whose supremacy is? From Ronnie!!! 🤔
      All people have their challenges, their anguish, their dramas. And young Sullivan, with his parents in jail and involved in drunkenness, beat up Hendry mature, experienced, and calm. 🤭 😜
      Hendry dominated 10 years straight? Against weak opponents! 😤
      He and his weak opponents Jimmy, Alex, Davis and Ebdon were pretty beaten up by the younger generation, Selby, Murphy, Higgins, Williams and Ronnie. What did you do? retired 🤪
      Ronnie is the "goat" from start to finish!!! 😛🤩
      He won 7 world championships, 7 UKs and 7 Masters, against his generation + the new one, all mixed up!
      Two super generations - Higgins, Selby, Williams, Carter, Shawn, Trump, Hawkins, Gary Wilson, Robertson, Ding, Gold, McGill, Kyren Wilson, Bingham, Bingtao, Allen, Marco Fu, Wembo, Maguire and other beasts). 😉 🤩 ✳️
      Are the two seven world champions?
      But Ronnie won 39 "rank titles", Hendry only 36!!!
      Ronnie has top records --- 15x 147 --- 1170x 100 --- 147 fastest - among others!
      Ronnie has "Three Triple Crowns"!!! 😛😜😂🤣🤣
      And finally, Ronnie playing is a star of the first magnitude. He has a unique competence, he has a mysterious lightness, boldness, courage! He is unique, like a Pele, like a Bruce Lee, like a Muhammad Ali, like a Jordan, like a Aznavour!
