UPDATE JUNE 2020 - NEW SEXING VIDEO czcams.com/video/oQB9E6Oozc0/video.html
Update: All chicks were correctly feather sexed using this method.
Great Idea in repurposing your old crib into a brooder! Thanks for the tips on sexing baby chicks.
Sounded l like your family had a rough weekend. Hopefully everyone is feeling better. I like the idea behind your crib remodel.
Yea we're all a lot better than last weekend. The kids are still coughing but not fever and no more sinus gunk thankfully
What a great video thank you for sharing I’m glad I found your channel I look forward to seeing more of your videos
Thank you for watching :) Glad you enjoyed the video
thank you so much. I have to find out what my new little chick is. The crib idea is great. 💕NonnaGrace
Glad it was helpful! I have a more updated version of this video, too from last June.
What a good idea! Well done and thanks for the video...
thank you!!
Fun video. That cat 😄!
Thanks! Haha yea he's been napping onnthe lid of that brooder like every day
Cat cable...all chickens, all the time!
Is there an updated video? I'm going to attempt to look now, but im extremely curious if this method worked i have 1 week old astralorps Id love to know the sex now
There's not a specific video dedicated to the update but there is an update in the video description that all chicks were sexed correctly with this method. There were 6 hens and 4 roosters in this batch of chicks. I hope this helps 😊
@@HomesteadDreaming how old are they
Look what video CZcams just recommend for me. Wow....this was almost 2 years ago.
Love baby chicks
Oh my gosh 🤦♀️😂 I have an updated one from the summer but youtube thinks this is the one. It's so not the one 😂😂😂 early youtube kira was not a great vlogger
you did great identifying the chicks, bang on the money.
Thanks! I ended up right with all of them
Your cat likes the chickens! My kitten (at the time) did the same thing and a couple of times she got in and tried to catch them.
Sexing chicks is hard!! I tried to do that when I bought my bantams. I wanted all females but half of them turned out to be roosters 🤷🏻♀️ they are not that bad and they are pretty good protectors considering they are tiny.
My cat loves my chickens think its bothers lamp and watching them my cat dose not bother them at all I have two cats its great, I love it great vidio
Thank you! He still does this anytime we get new chicks lol
Going to try this! Also watch for that pastybutt! Chick #2 looked like she needed help!
Oh yea I totally got that pasty butt. Man something I noticed in my newest batch of chicks is cochins are way more prone to pasty butt than the others, Keep an eye out for an update on this video, it's coming out monday morning 😊
My boys are watching with me and they said they think the cat wants to eat the chicks 😂😂 I hope not!
😂😂 it's possible. He's been sleeping on top of that brooder ever since i brought it down. I'm not sure what he thinks. I keep telling him they're not his chickens 😅
@@HomesteadDreaming haha too funny!!
We too repurposed our pack n play crib into a chick brooder, it has worked greatly. To date it has brooded 20 chicks.
That's awesome! I'm glad it's worked for you :)
Sorry you all aren't feeling well. I have heard a few old wives tales that if you turn them on their backs (while holding in your hand) you can sex them also. The cockerels should kick their legs out and the pullets will pull their legs up to their belly. I don't know how true it is, but would be interested to see how that would hold up with the feathers. We haven't had huge success marking with marking but purchase the multi colored tiny zip ties to put on their legs. All of our markings always get worn off. Be careful, chickens are the gateway drug for homesteaders everywhere....lol!
It's right and thanks for the video
Thanks for watching! I did end up being right on all of them :)
Just got chicks this week, so this is very helpful, thank you! What have you learned about keeping the vents clean/clear? Am I worrying too much? Gave one a bath last night, lol
I have had a handful of chicks get "pasty butt" over the last few years and it's pretty easy to take care of. Just check on them regularly and if one has it, take a wet cotton swab with warm water and gently wash the back feathers and vent. It may take 5 or 6 cotton swabs to get the job done but it's the easiest method I've found.
I got 7 little black frizzle week old chicks. One was not happy. We realised that its vent was caked. My son carefully washed it with warm water until all the c#@p came away. It left a little raw parsons nose. It immediately did an enormous poop. We dried it gently with a hair dryer and fed it some puréed corn. After a few hours it was hopping about and drinking. Within 48 hrs it was normal and a week later has caught up with the others. Just my luck it will be a rooster…I keep a close eye for caked or blocked vents. It can kill a chick.
This is so cool you can identify that early.
So it's not as easy if you have all of one sex. I tried to do this again over the summer and they were both cockrells and I thought they were pullets 🤷🏻♀️ these buff orpingtons were easy though
I think it's both! Heat lamp and chickens, that's the perfect spot.😂
Hahaha yes he definitely loves it up there
Its gonna be fun to see the outcome.
My cat is the same way. Lol
@@pgnanofarm9776 lol that's hilarious. Cats are so silly. I hope I'm right about the amount of hens I have lol
hi! what’s the ideal age of chicks if you are doing this kind of sexing ? thanks for the response . will try it on my chicks
Hi Jerome I did this when they were about a week old. You can tell pretty quickly. Within a few days of hatching. The pullets start to grow feathers fairly quickly.
New friend from Pusa's. I imagine would not be easy to check their sex. They are so precious!
Some are easier than others but for this batch of chicks I ended up being spot on :) thanks for watching
Great job
thank you 😊
How are they so calm when you slip their feathers out!?
lol I'm thinking because we handle our chicks a lot. My children like to hold them so they are used to being held
Note: background music needs to be soft and not make it difficult to hear a person speak. You’re back from music is way too loud.
yes thank you. This video is over a year and a half old and learning to make decent content is a process. I think I've learned to make better background music choices in more recent videos. Thanks for watching
You have done great. Suggestion. Set your feed up on 2 bricks. That way, they have a platform to stand on and they won't kick the wood in their food and water
Are you going to eat the extra roosters? 😬
That's the plan. We'll see how that goes 😂
That’s a cool way to tell. Thanks for that tip.
I hope I'm right hahaha
ThatEverydayKira haha.
my god stop with the music while talking
Thanks so much for watching. As time goes on we learn and evolve. My more recent videos are much more pleasing to the ear.
@@HomesteadDreaming your are nice my apology 🧡🙂
@@litahsr.8226 thank you 😊 I didn't expect this video to get as many views as it has. Filmed on my phone, edited poorly, loud music. Haha I've gotten much better in the last year
@@HomesteadDreaming I just hate youtube music Thanks for all the tips on the chicks I never would have known which was which 😃
@@litahsr.8226 ha I hate youtube music, too. I don't use it anymore. I use music from an outside source. You're very welcome! If you're interested I just posted a new video about my first egg hatch experience. It could have gone better 😂
What if you have only one chick and can’t tell the difference, e: if some chicks wings are smaller or larger and more developed, and dosent the second chick you showed have pasty butt? Also how old are they and will you keep any Roos?
Hey thanks for asking. I have found that this method is rather difficult if you don't have both sexes to compare to. That little chick did have pasty butt and I didn't think to do a video on it back then (over a year ago). Two of the hens from this original batch are left. They're a year and a half old now. The roosters were food.
Quit the music.. it does my head in 😖😖😖
Awesome feedback! Thanks for the input
How old were those chicks
they were about a week old
How old were they in this video?🤔
They're about a week old maybe 6 or 7 days.
@@HomesteadDreaming Ok. Thank you for the answer🙂
Thanks mam
Thanks for watching
The bakgroung music is so loud that it is hard to hear you speak.
Thanks for watching through one of my earliest videos. In the years since this was made I've since evolved and learned much better editing techniques
some breeds are hard to use this method.
So true. And some breeds like silkies for example can't be feather sexed at all
how did you get on with accuracy ??
I was 100% right. 4 roosters, 6 hens. 😊
You did good
cat totally wants to eat those chimken nuggies
Lol he didn't though
Soo was she right? Did she determinated the boys and girls?
Yes all were sexed correctly. I have an update in the video description
background music way too loud!!
Totally agree, which is why I made a new updated video for 2020! Linked in the comments, in the description, and in the cards in the video.
Nice
Thanks
Marking them with a marker will result in pecking the marked ones to injury or death.
the marker rubbed off within a day. I ended up using loose fitting zip ties. It worked like a charm. This video is a year and half old. They all survived to adulthood
Good to hear. My five buff braham appear to be hens.
What do you do with extra roosters
Out of the 4 I had in this batch, 3 have been culled for dinner so far. One is still around for the time being. I also ended up with one other rooster from another batch of chickens and he is staying.
@@HomesteadDreaming So are you correct on the feather sexing? Just curious to know if the sexing is correct. Many Thanks
@@romeodc8770 hey thanks for asking! Yes I was correct on the sexing. I had 6 hens and 4 roosters
@@HomesteadDreaming Nice, Thanks, will apply that since I will buy buff orpington chicks
You can identify if your chicken is a girl or a boy at 1 day old
Cool
How?
I cant tell Male or Female.. I tried to look at it ...
It's a very subtle but distinct difference. I show the differences between the two
Some breeds can not be feather sexed
He only wants a snack mom... jus a lil one
Like 333! Hi new friend here! Great informational video! I’m new at this too but I’ve heard the same thing your saying! If you get a min come visit us! Always a video for video full watch from the Animal Papa family! Hope you have a great rest of the week my friend! Take care and God bless! Animal Papa and Junior! 😎🐓❤️👍🙏
One of those babies has a pasty bottom
Yea not anymore lol that was multiple years ago. But I took care of it. Cotton swab, warm water, and a gentle hand
The more you know ^.^
lol yep!
Turn off the music so we can hear you.
So how are they aha
I actually don't have any of these original chickens anymore. The roosters went to the dinner pot, most of the hens when to a friend and the one I kept for my mixed flock was attacked by raccoon while I had a chicken sitter and didn't make it. But the sexing all turned out right.
@@HomesteadDreaming aww sorry for ur loss! I just got a buff orpington like urs and looming at this video its a pullet!!
Cut to the chase for God's sake!
😉
you need to watch for pasty butt
Thanks they're all adults now.
Please take out the background music!!!
Hey thanks for the comment. This video is multiple years old and as you know, when people do new things there's always a learning curve. Please enjoy our newer videos that have a much more balanced music level.
Way toooo long.just say it allready!!!!!!!!!
Thanks 😉
