PULLET or COCKEREL? | How To Identify Pullets When Buying or Raising Your Own Laying Flock

- Feather Sexing is generally considered 90-99% successful. Feather Sexing is the easiest way to attempt to learn how to identify a young pullet from a cockerel. And takes little to no training. I remember researching this when we bought our first laying flock and going to the feed store to pick out baby chickens. I was looking for clear definition of the primary and covert feathers. This sexing process works best for chicks between one and four days old.
If I couldn't feather sex them without a doubt I would set them back. I still could be wrong about our supposed rooster but I do know for a fact the other 4 are most certainly pullets. I hope this helps you out if your going to purchase a laying flock for the first time or hatching out your own.
Also Post Edit: Cockerels have covert feathers as well they are just the same length typically as their primary feathers.

Post Edit: I guess all chickens have primary and covert feathers, however on pullet the primary and covert feathers are clearly distinguishable. Good luck selecting your laying flock
Might be a good idea to either keep the ro or get another one for future flocks. We don't know what all may be coming.

Hatch 8 and 1 rooster 7 hens same as what your saying, also rooster voice is louder, look at the tail hens grow faster , Thank you

@@1870s - Oh I think it sure will! I am building a coop this summer in preparation of getting some laying hens. In the event I must buy chicks I can now double check chicks that are being sold as pullets so you have in the very least helped me.

Incubator worked perfectly for small homestead, but yeah already wishing I had gotten the bigger

I seen a video of a chicken breeder and she said the rounder the egg, is most likely a hen and the long narrow egg are rooster. I would be interested if you use this method to see if she was right.
That's what we're hoping for. We used "round" eggs when we hatched both rounds of chicks. We'll see as they age, if it helped. So far, going by feathers, it worked pretty well.
I have one really round egg that is looking like a rooster, though we will be very happy if he is. His daddy who was the best rooster died so we would welcome him. I do wonder how much the breed and age can affect the egg sexing technique. I have a dozen that are in the incubator now. If the egg shape really dictates we'll have 4 roosters and 8 hens.

Just kidding. I think wait until they are 4 days. It now has differing feathers that look like a female. My bad. Probably because I was really hoping it was a rooster.

"this"? work? maybe on Purebreds of established breeds I find my EE's and mixed all over the map on feather, comb, and growth and even behavior. A matched group of Purebreds would fgive you a known BASE to judge the others in the same group. Not so the mutts, or breeds "not finished" when the breeder passed on.
I know this. I do buy chicks from my farm store, but I don’t handle them. I do look for signs of splaying, scissor beaks, and good thrift. If I want pullets I order them, and I handle them for all the same reasons and sexing. And I don’t mind if there is a rooster or two. I have bought all roosters.
I don’t think I would be to pleased that the majority of what I bought at the farm store of straight run chickens were almost all male.

From what I have read, you can mate a rooster with his mother or daughters but not with sisters and vice versa, a hen with father or sons but not brothers.

Do not use this it isn’t accurate. Mine showed 3 hens and 1 rooster. I got 2 roosters. And 2 hens. And one of the hens was one that showed a rooster. Was wayyyy off
It absolutely works but only accurate the first few days, so if you went out and looked at mature birds or older pullets then yes you might have seen a difference we've had a near 100% success rate
@@1870s I did it as soon as they hatched and checked 3 times after. Feathers showed 1 rooster 3 hens. I ended up with 2 roosters and 2 hens. And the one with the same length feathers was a hen lol
