    Also you want to liberally silicone the high and low voltage connectors. Pour it right down the little white tubes covering the connections. If not it can arc to the box. And never go near the high voltage end when laser is powered. If you have to adjust the tube, do it carefully from the low power end if you are going to keep laser main on while adjusting.

    Without the grounding wire going straight to ground (I literally ran it out a window into the ground) I experienced a little bit of a tingling feeling if leaning against the laser. Putting in and taking out things from the laser, my hand would touch the edge of the machine, resulting in tiny electric shocks. The laser was connected to a grounded outlet. It all stopped after grounding the laser properly.

    • @JaakkoF
      @JaakkoF Před 5 lety +2

      You might want to call an electrician to chek your grounding. It also is very possible that it is not actually grounded, but done with PE-N connection, in which case the ground is floating under load.

    Great review! Been looking at one of these units lately. Your review is most informative and has me convinced that this is the machine for me.For more laser cooling... Get a bigger bin. Fill about a half dozen 16oz water bottles 2/3rds full of water and pop them in the freezer. Under heavy use, pop one or two at a time in the bin full of water. Swap them out as the ice in the bottles melts.

    That tape is for aligning your beams. You need to make sure beam is in line and coincident all around the travel of the machine. It is not electrical tape nor is it to seal the water tubes

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop  Před 5 lety +1

      Gottcha, I used a sticky note to make sure the beam was going into the middle of the mirrors so I'm guessing the tape is to do something similar?

    • @ArionRaine
      @ArionRaine Před 5 lety

      No, it is not. It is neither for aligning, or sealing the water tubes. Nor is it electrical tape. If you look at it closer, you will see it is thin double sided tape. It is for sealing the exhaust tube!!!! One of the manuals I have had for these even states as much. But yes, you sort of made a mistake buying this machine. You should have just purchased one of the larger red/black ones with Ruida controller. You do not even need to use LightBurn with the Ruida. RDWorks is absolutely fine, and has a lot more features than LightBurn.

SO for a year now...I've been trying to find out information on HOW...to set this thing up and get it going. i'm about ready to kick the damned thing..lmao...like i said...it's frustrating...i can rebuild a 3d printer but can't seem to figure out... what I do..... first on this thing. Its not the controller on these cheap machines which is the issue its the cheap co2 narrow beam 50w laser tube :-( Its all about gearing or beam convergence if your serious about cutting any reasonable thickness perspex or mdf
    I have another machine now which still has all the same cheap chinese tube mirrors and lenses
    however the 80w tube in this machine has a larger diameter beam with a 2:1 stepped down XY belt resolution which makes so much difference :-)
    Can cut with less wattage on the 80w machine through the same material using a faster feedrate than the small 50w machine

    • @WHJeffB
      @WHJeffB Před 4 lety

      Sure it's a cheap machine, but it's a good "starter" system. You can pretty easily retrofit it with a better laser, laser control, stepper motors or CNC control for not a lot of money. The basic machine is pretty sound though. I've retrofitted mine (same system as the one in the video) with new optics (3 new bending mirrors and a brand new cutting lens) and it made a huge difference. Was able to get a smaller focused beam and could cut the same material/thickness with about 10-12% less power at the same feedrate.

    i have an 80 watt with the ruida controller, i am running corel draw x18 and when i send files over using the plugin that came with the laser it does not fill in the text. The Laser seems to only want to "cut" objects out rather than engrave them. I did find a setting called "scan" and "cut" and changed it to scan, which then filled in the text and designs rather than outlining them but even after that the quality of the engraving is not very high. id give it a 70 out of 100. Ive tried re aligning my mirrors and they seem to be pretty straight on. the mirror i have the most issue with is the one at the tip of the laser head. i have issues getting it to come out of the tip of that cone that covers the end. the top adjustment is not very adjustable. If you have any advice id love to hear back from you because as of now the laser sits here doing nothing. its a $2000 desk.

    What is it with people thinking that the ground in their plug is grounding this machine!!! You're not the only one I've seen. You said, "I haven't grounded this machine but we'll see"!!! What is it you want to see? How the live wire of the laser can arc to the chassis & what a few thousand volts feels like? The Chinese don't normally ground anything, in fact they just cut it off, even on outdoor lighting so imagine how important they must think it is to include it with this machine!

    No but serious, connect these grounding wires to some kind of ground! The tube itself works with high volatage not your everage high volatage, but really high voltage we are talking about multible kV! in case of an internal short you can touch the laser metal housing and turn into instant bacon!

    SAFETY WARNING - Those green goggles are for blue diode lasers not for the CO2 laser and if it isn't made out of PC they will stop nothing. Just a safety warning.

    • @techoverload
      @techoverload Před 5 lety +5

      @@makeorbreakshop "The best stooge" is Incorrect.......Pretty much anything will work as safety glasses for a Co2 laser, especially at only 50w. The PC or acrylic safety glasses, though tint is completely redundant, will absorb the vast majority of the beams energy (which is why your co2 laser will cut/burn plastics). There protection would only last very briefly at the lasers focal point, but it would be fairly difficult to arrange having them on and getting your head under the laser head and at exactly the right distance to be at the focal point.
      A unfocused beam would take a considerable amount of time to get through pretty much any plastic or even glass lens (your prescription eye wear offers more than adequate protection)
      Second side note.......the "chiller" you showed briefly is not a chiller, it is just a radiator with a water pump and fan, the best it is capable of is cooling the water to ambient air temp, but it will struggle doing that if you run any long jobs on your machine. you would want a CW-5000 or above to get an actual chiller that uses refrigerant to cool the water.
      Side note number 3........inline heaters are only used for people who have their laser in a non temperature controlled environment where the temp drops below freezing. As the water freezing inside the laser tube will break the glass tube.
      Side not number 4...... The plastic manifold with the tube coming off it at 5:48 is what comes with the air pump (they are just pond air pumps) and the manifold is so you can branch off the main air out and feed it to several smaller lines going to aerators in your pond.
      Side note number 5...... If you have read this far, I actually have a spare ruida controller I would be willing to sell you if you were interested in doing the conversion.
      I run two machines in my home shop. A massive 1300x900mm working area 150w and a smaller 700x500mm 80w.

      @huhhman With such a well formed argument I don't know how I could possibly reply.........
      1. retail/industrial co2 safety glasses are just polycarbonate lens's
      2. Acrylic will absorb a higher energy density than PC, however PC is cheaper and easier to manufacture and the difference in protection for any home/shop grade co2 laser is negligible
      3. My statement about prescription eye wear is based on the fact that the vast majority of glasses (especially in the US) are made of polycarbonate.
      But please enlighten us as to what proper eye protection is? Is it the sticker on the box they come in that says "protects against wicked awesome lasers and totally isn't just a pair of standard polycarbonate safety glasses"? Or does it rely on short replies that primarily consist of insults and zero facts, because you certainly have nailed that.

    • @makeorbreakshop

      Yep! That is basically the heat from the laser melting the material underneath. A lot of lasers have a honeycomb bed so there is open air underneath the material to help offset this. Since mine doesnt have this you could either put some honeycomb on top or just add a few riser blocks to the get the material off of the bottom of the bed.

      You have a few things wrong then, first is focus, so if your cutting say 3mm and your getting a problem on the last 1mm then lower focus 1mm. Your air assist would push debris clear of the cut, also the last thing is to turn speed up a bit as the laser is to slow and melting the burr. good luck
