  • In this video I show a less common find of a cracked lower intake manifold on a 1997 Chevy Silverdo truck with a 5.7L Vortec engine. Although leakage at the intake manifold gaskets is a common issue, this particular problem is less common and more difficult to identify. I show the use of a bore scope camera and cooling system pressurization to inspect and confirm the cause of this particular issue. Thanks for watching and please subscribe to my channel!

    A month ago I told you that I would roll the dice and just change the intake manifold gaskets.Well success!$54. later she is on the road.After starting it up it still smoked. However it cleared up after taking it for a test drive.Because of a botched install of gaskets from a garage the person that I got the truck from just gave the truck to me for scrap.She is running well now. Lucky me.Because the truck burned so much antifreeze it contaminated the EGR which I cleaned and buggered up the O2 sensor and replaced it.I was still afraid that there might be a cracked head when the vehicle was still smoking so I tried this kit from U View and it confirmed I had no exhaust gas in the cooling system. Thank you so much for you incite.If I get one of my bucket list wishes it will to be to ride up to Alaska with my motorcycle carrying enough Beer to sit up all night and swap Manly Stories LOL.Thanks again and take care.

    Thanks for posting this video , I think it confirms what I've finally worked out over three years of battling my 98 Chevy suburban vortec , I fitted a rebuilt motor five years back , three years now I've been destroying starter motors noticing vape fromthe exhaust on first start up , hard start , engine lock up and kick bak on cranking , no real loss of coolant but a little bit ,engine seemed to develop excessive psi on attempted start , if you got thru a couple of attempted starts with a bit of blowback etc then it'd fire and run , there was always a little intermittent miss ,and scanner showed extra fuel being dumped in the right bank I thought it was a small exhaust gasket leak , truck would start fine if it'd been recently run , no coolant in oil ,kept blaming crank sensor cam sensor knock sensor you name it ,even replaced distributor ,never throws a code ,after several months sitting and fail to start killing another starter I pulled the plugs and find two cyl have rust on plugs and detonation signs on all plugs , it's gotta be a small intake manifold leak that causes some kind of hydraulic pressurising when trying to start after it's been sitting thru coolant biuld up in the two bores ,if recently run it must not be enough coolant to cause excessive psi in bores and it must be small enough to burn off when running , Chevy are rare in Australia so self diagnosing is really your only option ,hence my stupid three year journey , now I'm finding more US guys are warning of the damned manifold gasket failures , thanks again for helping and sharing your knowledge

    Have a '99 Suburban with 197,000 got it 3yrs. old at 50,000. Oil every 3,000. One day a year ago engine noise and hard starting got my attention. Realized white smoke ( coolant ) from the exhaust, vey low coolant level, added some, put on a thermostat, then ran down to Valvoline Service and got flushed and refilled. I then used a coolant additive for gasket leaks, the white smoke quit. Changed plugs. Runs like new. Shortly after, the transmission quit. Changed fluid, got worse. Has the Transmission rebuilt $2000 and I am very happy. Expect another 100,000 miles.

    hay, car Dr, I have 99 GMC Suburban 5.7 Vortec L31 engine. very robust and reliable vehicle for me, I've put 125,000 miles on it. it's now 224,000 miles. I just replaced my intake manifold gaskets and bolts, heater coupler. bolts were stretched to a degree. coupler were rusted out. it took me complete full day to do it all. When I had the manifold off, I decarbonized the intake and the ports. cleaned it up pretty well. I put Al Delco brand in instead of felpro. it runs pretty dam good now. now that's done, I need to focus on my tranny, it needs to be rebuilt. Then I'm good for many miles to come. I love this truck :) love yar videos!

    Perfect description of what happened to my 1998 Chevy with the 5.7. The intake manifold gasket failed (or the intake cracked) and the coolant filled the oil pan. The engine had 188,000 miles on it so had a rebuilt engine installed. It was a $2000 repair! What can I say, I need the truck. I'd like to have that one for the body, it looks straight.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 8 lety +1

      +wyattoneable The body and frame are in excellent condition. I can put you in touch with the owner and you can come out with a trailer for it. But I think it will cost you about 10,000 in gas round trip. This is a 4X4 so even the labor to replace the engine is more. I can't even buy a quality reman (GM goodwrench) engine for much less than 2000 here. Oh well, I just hope I can actually fix some cars today. Thanks for stopping by!

    What I find amusing in all these cases where it will "cost more to fix than its worth" cases that the owner goes out and spends about 5 times as much again on a new or late model. Even more amusing is to hear the stories about all the costs and repairs on the new one after a few years. Had they fixed the old one they would have saved 1000s and be driving something more classic. Of course this is assuming the old one is not rusting to bits.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 8 lety +3

      +Andrew Thompson You make valid points. We don't have a lot of rust here so that's not an issue. Replacing the engine and transmission along with other components in this case would probably end up around 10,000 and they likely decided it wasn't worth the investment. It is also a second car for the family and that no doubt factored into their decision. I thought to myself about offering something for the truck since it has brand new tires but then I counted the cost and even for me it's more than I care to spend on an older vehicle. We have become very disposable in our culture and it's a mindset that will likely only get worse in the future unless we go through major economic downturn and start being more careful about how we spend our money. Thanks for stopping by!

      I get it. These trucks run forever if maintained. The transmissions were a weak point in these years. But totally worth keeping on the road compared to getting yourself into a 600+ car payment plus insurance on a new one. Blessings.

      Andy Thompson your right on the money. I have a 2000 Silverado that I drive daily now mind you I only put about 5000 miles a year on it but I have recently had to replace quite a bit of parts on it mostly original parts. Been a hell of a good truck with minimal rust on it and best of all it is paid for and the insurance is pretty cheap. Every time I have something that needs replaced my buddies say "why don't you get rid of that thing and get something newer". Now mind you I would love to have a nice fancy newer truck but im not in love with the idea of a $500+ payment a month. I will repair my older one when it needs it, take care of it, and keep it on the road as long as possible. When she rusts into I will get something newer.

    I've got a 1996 5.7L that has had a mystery leak for quite some time. I have used IronTite coolant system leak a couple of times which brought me results but eventually the coolant level snuck down and it overheated a couple of times.
    I now have coolant in the oil, froth on the dipstick. It is idling a little rough now but not horribly. There could be a very small amount of white smoke (coolant in combustion) but if so not a lot.
    This leaves me unsure as to whether the head or head gasket is leaking as well as the typical intake gasket problem on these 5.7s.

  • @Bradley_Bern
    @Bradley_Bern Před 7 lety

    1995 yukon 5.7 not a vortechHas the same issue, vaping through the tailpipe, and loosing coolant. I believe that it's just the intake gasket. The plugs are not wet. The engine has great compression and the water pump is doing its job . Does not overheat when there is a full level of coolant. The crankcase does have some froth built up on the cap but inside the lifters look clean.

    I believe I am looking at the exact same failure in a 99' 4.3L Vortec. Same initial symptom of coolant going somewhere but no sign of leak or burn. I too thought the water pump when I seen a slight leak start. Upon starting the truck after buying the pump, bigger leak and spewed a bit of steam but it seem to clear up. Then I got on the road and it was steaming out the carb, would sit 200-210 like usual then sudden spike to 260 where all the coolant just flashed into steam. I raced to pop off the air intake, pcv hose and hold the throttle over to let the steam vent so it doesn't condense into the cylinders enough to hydrolock them. Once it calmed add some water to give it something to work with and get a mile or two more before red light and there it goes again. By time I got it home, which was a grand journey of 5 miles in 2 hours. I had rerouted PCV hose to the overflow tank, blocked off a couple lines with hose clamp. Struct a balance where the engine has a continuous flow of steam into the overflow via the PCV, but at such a rate it maintain 230 which I know these engine can actually handle since that's one option for the thermostat when I buy replacements. I am terrified to start breaking it down and seeing if I can save it or not.

    I have 1999 GMC 4x4 Suburban with 180K that just reared it's ugly head with this problem. It's only been driven 60 miles with the problem. I'm planning to take it in tomorrow to a local shop and see if I can get an estimate. What interesting is that it never show's it's overheating, although the "check guages" light has blinked on and off a few times. Tranny has been solid with no apparent issues. I'k like to keep this ride, although I do have other rides. It's been great to have for local trips that require space. and hauling. Other car's that I have are to small to add a trailer. I live in Texas and I'm hoping that the bill isn't to crazy. (under 1K). Time will tell. If it's too funky, probably will sell it, although not sure what it's worth in thie currrent condition. • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 8 lety +1

      +Ozzstar Good question. Many engines do this and I won't pretend to know all the reasons. One is that the flow of coolant needs to cross over from one cylinder head to another and then through the engine block. It's just a pathway to allow flow across the entire engine. Also, the hear get earthed from the flow of coolant prevents atomized fuel from hitting a cold intake base and turning into liquid this becoming less efficient as it enters the combustion chambers. I bet there are even more important reasons I haven't thought of but that's why I just fix them not design them. Well in this case I just read them their last rights! Thanks for watching.

      But, IF you put in a gm crate "reman" motor, it would have a GM 3year/???mile warranty, and later, when the tranny crapped, you could have it redone as well, and then the truck would be practically a new one, since the most expensive parts of it have been redone. Sure, the book value is less than the repairs...but a new truck is $40,000+ nowdays, and has more crap on it to break! To me, if the frame, electrical, and body is in great condition, it's worth redoing! JMHO!

      yes but it is possible if the intake gasket leaks allowing coolant into an intake runner. It would have to be a cylinder that shares a passage next to the water passage like #1, 2, 7 or 8 not very common. I have also had a cracked intake leak into the intake and run into multiple cylinders. Might want to try using a combustion leak detector kit to see if there is combustion in the cooling system.

For a couple of months prior to this, I would get random no-starts from time to time, and gradually lost engine power and fuel efficiency (but it never died while idling, or surged). It had to be brought back to my home on a flat bed trailer, and it hasn't moved since. Could it be a blown intake gasket?

      maybe but possibly two separate problems one a coolant loss and the other a no-start issue

      I was checking the radiator on it yesterday, and I found a leak in one of the cooler lines. So I'm led to believe it's a radiator leak, and possibly a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Thanks.

    Hey doc, I have a 2001 8.1 gas where I would have intermittent puddles underneath on passenger side. Pressure tested and see if coming from what appears passenger side bottom of exhaust manifold. Prob working it's way down from somewhere. Just starting this dive and wondering if you have any insights.

    I got the same problem, but the intake isn't cracked as far as I can tell anyway . seems more of an external leak In The front of the motor. I'm going to try and fix it . though the transmission does leak.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 7 lety +2

      Very common issue of the gaskets failing. Be sure to use the updated gaskets for this since they wont leak after.

    hi my friend is leaking coolant from the passenger side I looked under his car a couple of days later when he told me I don't see no sign of current loss but it's on the floor respect the hoses and radiator and the cap they're all in good condition I haven't drove it out about a hundred miles and no overheating issues but no pressure in the hoses and no leak in the gaskets either can it be like that video you put where it's getting the oil in the bottom

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes but the water pumps leak and its hard to see where its running out. Look for signs of coolant dripping off the passenger side of the oil pan gasket area along the length of the pan or along the front of the steering linkage area which would indicate a water pump leak. Other wise remove the oil drain plug and watch for any coolant running out.

    If anybody owns any of these 5.7 L Vortech engines chip for you so you don’t have to pay $400 for an intake gasket go on Amazon and they’re only $85 for the whole kit intake gasket and head gaskets and all and the intake and the head gaskets aren’t plastic with the ceiling it’s metal with the ceiling component

    Here's an oddity for ya leaking coolent water pumps good no coolent in oil oil pan checked out no chocolate milk no loss of performance 2007 4.8 GMC Sierra i was reading where another guy had the same problem and it was an external head gasket leak where it wasn't leaking into the block but out of the block and burning off?

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 7 lety +1

      That can happen. Most likely cause of coolant loss is faulty water pump but head gaskets can leak into the combustion chambers, into the crankcase or externally.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Před 8 lety +2

      +Koffi Banan 400 (or €1500 haha) is the cost of an entire intake manifold (kit) in this case a fairly large chunk of cast aluminum. But we are in Alaska where everything is more expensive I guess. I wish I hadn't replaced the water pump before discovering the bigger problem.
