  • Visit our website www.tedxberlin.de for more information on Yuliana Gorkorov. Yuliana Gorkorov, M.A., is a multilingual communication designer, graduate of the Folkwang University of the Arts (2017). Her knowledge of the Hebrew, Cyrillic, Latin and Arabic alphabets drove her to create the award winning «Global Alphabet» project. Within the project she designed fonts that unite these alphabets in different ways, making them simultaneously readable to people from different cultures. She presents the project in exhibitions and lectures around the world, giving a new perspective on letters that we use every day. Yuliana worked for several years as a graduate assistant at the Institute for Lifelong Learning of the Folkwang University. Currently she is working as an independent designer focusing on projects in the field of type design and the history of writing.

    Linguistically speaking, there is actually the hypothesis that languages are getting closer to each other and that probably in 1000 years there will be just a few languages left. Well, this video explains that concept in a very practical and realistic way, thank you for sharing!

    • @youxkio
      @youxkio Před 5 lety +1

      @The Rockall Times I believe you! Some modest linguistic scientists say in 1000 years there will be only 2 or 3 languages which if we were taken in a time machine we wouldn't understand those 2 or 3 languages. I also agree with you, taking 2 factors as an example: IT and the speed of the consolidation of globalization.

    Idea of unifying alphabets for different languages is not so good as one may think . Alphabet by its nature represent sounds of given language . How can unified alphabet represent the sound / ʃ / ? In Serbo-Croatian it is a letter š . All right we make new gliph ( Or , which is more ridiculous an emoji ) . An IPA consists of 107 letters, 52 diacritics, and 4 prosodic marks . And it is already an International Phonetic alphabet . You can say that we can do - graphs ( Combinations of letters usually two or three , but can be up to five or six to represent a single sound ) , as in German 'Sch' , but - it is a writing system . And if would constraint every language to a set of say 30 letters , the languages with unique sounds not truly represented by this alphabet will have to transform into awkward di - , tri - and so on graphs . Idea with basically emojis is ridiculous for reason of writing . How can you write down on paper Flower or Internet and be efficient in it . And yes - we will still use writing on physical surfaces at least in emergencies and formalities . So , writers would develop their own ways of writing down characters , maybe simplifying them . . . and we get Chinese hieroglyphs and Egyptian writing . You cannot have a single writing system on Earth without a single language .

    It'll have to be phonetic. For Russian and Hebrew it's not a huge problem, don't know about Arabic, but for English... You'll have to spell "christmas" like "krismas", and it's not the worst example -- yeah, I'm looking at you, "tough", "queue" and "colonel". And the French would just freak out, you know...
    And what about not international sounds? Like th, g, ы?
    (And it's actually not "christmas" in Russian and I really doubt about Hebrew, so... not that international of a word.)
    The idea is really great though.

    A great idea. The acrophony approach makes amazing sense in the proto Canaanite, as the word names the symbols, and sounds all correspond. Not more "A is for Apple disassociative barriers. Aleph is aleph is the very sound you say in aleph. And the picture of the ox matches. Sad we abstracted away from this elegant system in the west. I would like to see how thus applies to non-familial language merges, but the fresh start principle she used could work, albeit you need truly international symbols, as simple and universal as the house of the Beit, or Ox of Aleph. Avocado is not ubiquitous nor is USB. Otherwise, wonderful ideas. I simply suggest this refinement.

      The picture based approach helps dyslexia by removing a layer of abstraction. No wondering if you're seeing p, b, d, or q because beit, quph etc are distinct and omni directional as discrete entities eith concrete names and meanings to associate. It is out phonetic abstractions that are poorly done, nothing wrong for those who see letters as pictures, aka "dys"lexia. It is out lexia that is dys. It's be nice to fix it, no?

Great idea to have fonts where embedded foreign pronunciation can exist. We also have an international spelling alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, foxtrot etc.) But the pictogram idea using objects which have an internationally recognisable pronunciation is a great idea.
