  • Soaring over the clear waters of Loch Awe in Scotland is a mountain, Ben Cruahan, that masks a marvel of engineering: a hydroelectric plant carved deep within that points to the future of renewable energy, capable of powering 800,000 homes in seconds. Correspondent Roxana Saberi reports.

    Last month renewables generated 80% of energy in Scotland, this includes Hydro-electric, nuclear and wind turbines. Scotland has about 65 Conventional hydro-electric and 2 pumped hydro-electric stations.

    There really aren't many natural sites for pumped hydro energy storage, but they could still be used in the mix along with batteries, gravity, etc to provide energy storage for renewable energy sources. We are going to need every available option if we are going to save the climate. Twin lakes in Colorado is one such site.

    Weird that you flew all the way to Scotland to look at a 400 MW pumped storage when you could have driven 150 miles to visit the 1,100 MW Blenheim-Gilboa Power Project.

    Why did they go to Scotland? There as plenty of pumped hydro storage facilities in the USA

    While the efficiency charging and discharging of modern lithium batteries is around 95%, for both pumping the water up, then converting it back to electricity is about 80%, still better than burning fossil fuel. BTW as it is Scotland, is peat considered a "fossil fuel"?

    • @Johnstone72
      @Johnstone72 Před rokem

      Yes. Peat is considered as fossil. Peated Whiskies may eventually cease to exist.

    OMG! Planet saving news! Let's give it a catchy name, like Pumped Storage! BTW, that's sarcasm. Pumped storage has been around since 1907. The problem with building new is trying to license a dam.

    Americans don't want to create fish ladders on both sides of dams to deal with various pressures and temperatures because they love the little fishies and want to kiss pillows.

    This is great but the only down fall is it does create a problem for the animals and ecosystem as much as it gives it takes in nature
