It was obvious when the first photos were released that was what happened. The footings were intact. No sign of stress or damage. This is what happens when you get the cheapest contractors you can find. Has happened throughout NZ infrastructure

the guys doing the work must be dumber than a brick , even an ounce of common sense from one of the many workers would have prevented this . the other thing that needs scrutiny is the contractor model and how they are paid , is it paid per set task ? if so its far more prone to miss-haps

Why isn’t the maintenance of Transpower transmission lines done by Transpowers own staff. When the New Zealand Electricity Dept maintained the nations transmission lines, maintenance of the lines was the responsibility of the New Zealand’s Electricity Dept own staff. It will always cost more if you contract line maintenance out to contractors, because a profit margin is always added to the final contract price. What experience has Transpowers Chief Executive, Alison Andrew got with transmission line maintenance, has she ever climbed a 220Kv transmission tower ?

Who on earth certifies such a work team as this.? Do they not understand that high tension isn't only about electricity, towers are always under mechanical tension, this is a very embarrassing event. The crews I interacted with in 70s through to early 90s will be shaking their heads in disbelief, the documentation for the procedures have been in place for decades, its unbelievable. You can’t hold a CEO responsible for the actions of some workers not doing the most basic of jobs. Secure the nuts. It ain’t hard. The CEO could be paid $100k a year or $10m a year - that has nothing to do with a mistake some random employee down the line does. Too many people wanting someone to hang for the actions of someone else whom they have no control of on a task by task basis. The person that needs to be held accountable is the team of workers that didn’t secure the bolts. Why do they get protection.
