I’ve got to hand it to you for the trans rebuild. I would’ve boxed the whole thing up and dropped it off at the trans guys. And I would’ve had the stock flywheel resurfaced. Not every machine shop could resurface a flywheel but the best one I used back in the 70s was a guy that worked out the of an old chicken house. He did the best machine work of anybody for 10 counties around. He took a lot of ribbin’ until people saw his work & then they were having to eat their words. I really enjoy the videos and continue to pray for Aaron’s improvement & recovery & for Emily’s strength and patience as a helpmate.

Ah , the big city ! Retired elevator mechanic here and a street rodder. Arron would still be waiting at the counter without you with him ! LOL Love the Nova II, one of my girl fellow elevator mechanics had a the same in a wagon as a daily driver around 1990 or so and she loved it. I inherited a 72 from MIL in late 70's I6 with 2 sp. Great in the snow and ice.

Emily, you should be holding that torquey drill with both hands, wrap your left hand around the back end and have a death grip on it ! Never break a wrist.

I just drove from Las Vegas to Tampa FL by way of I-40. Pot holes galore! A cop pulled me over in Arkansas, because I was swerving to miss the holes. He laughed and didn't even ask me for my license or registration. He did however ask me what was in my 20ft. enclosed trailer. I said a '73 Dodge Charger, and he said, "Wow! Cool!" I was coming back from the Musclecars at the Strip event. Have a great trip!

    @millcrafters Před rokem

Love this channel. I had a high-end body shop for 20 years with altogether 11 employees. You could fit 20 cars inside. Anyhow, let me share something with you. GM. When the upper hinge on a door would get damaged it was a nightmare to replace. What GM did was close the door at the factory, crawl inside and place one bolt from the inside of the front pillar through the hinge. Then they would open the door and install the other two bolts. This did not allow for any fine adjustment.
Now here is the nightmare. To replace the upper hinge, you could not access the one bolt from the inside without taking the dash out which is an 8-hour job according to the crash manuals. The insurance company refused to pay to do it, and only allowed a half hour to just replace the hinge. So, here you have a high-end expert working flat rate to remove the dash. That is just where the fun begins. The dash is which is thick cardboard upper deck shelf covered in cheap vinyl. The only thing holding it in are thin metal clips. In order to remove it, after going through everything else, you could only tug on it, and inevitably, the carboard would tear, so when you placed the dash back in there, the chance of getting a rattle etc. was pretty high.
Then you get to the wiring harness with all of the different, or should I say, they are all the same connectors that snap together, so if you are not careful by labeling each one of the connections, you could, and sometimes do, put the wrong connection together. Then the customer comes back and says their dash lights aren't working, and their turn signals are constantly blinking. Mind you, it took 8 hours to remove this thing.
Just so you know how absurd this thing is, I want you to reflect on what the Japanese mfrs. did not have any two wiring connectors the same under the dash. One was an H pattern, another an L pattern, another a rectangle; it was impossible to hook anything else up wrong. You could only snap together the proper shaped connectors.
Then to fully understand the frustration of replacing the doors upper hinge, when you did finally get all three bolts out, and inside threaded plate would drop down into the hollow front door pillar hinge mounting section all the way down into the rocker panel. Now what are you supposed to do? Put some bubble gum on a stick and fish it out through the narrow hinge/hole opening from the upper hinge area? And when you do, how to you hold it in place while you secure it with bolts.
What Porsche did, (which wound up being 50% of what I worked on), was simply spot weld a small cage around the inside where the through bolt mounting plate goes, so when you released the bolts, it would only drop down, let's say a half inch, and the round opening in the sheet metal would allow you to fine tune the hinge position. With fine tuning you realize why a Porsche door closes with a ping perfectly, whereas... okay you don't need me to remind you the clunk when a GM door closes, and it only gets worse with wear, and can't be fine-tuned/adjusted. What you resort to doing is jacking the door up, bending it so it doesn't close so bad.
When working on a Porsche with an impacted door hinge, you are not focusing on raising the whole game up to the next level. You support the door with a protective board covered in a rug or towel. You gently remove the door, do your repairs in such a way that when you paint it you absolutely cannot tell it from a new factory install.
What many shops do when they are working on the GM hinge problem is simply cut it off with a wizzy tool, then install the new one with two bolts, and glue on a fake third bolt so it doesn't look like you did a shoddy repair, and then hope and pray that car does not get into an accident, with the door being torn off, thereby exposing you to a liability suit. Even worse yet was the mig welded it permanently onto the hinge pillar.
Don't misunderstand me, my favorite car of all time was my 1966 Chevy Malibu 327 4spd convertible, in Marina Blue Metallic with a white convertible top. 305hp with a bench seat, and a Muncie shifter. It only had 35,000 miles on it when I bought it for only $1500. (I guess I am showing my age.🙂 It had a 308 rear, and a wide ratio trans, so it would jump out of the hole, but by the time you got up to 4th gear, the motor would barely be idling doing 60 mph and gave me 20 mpg on the highway, all the way beating GTO's. (gas was 29 cents a gallon back then too.) Then there was my 69 Camaro SS350. My 66 Corvette convertible, or my 74 Corvette orange with a tan gut. I could go on. I try to love them all, but after a while dealing with the engineering headaches, I finally became a shop that specialized in imported cars. Thanks for letting me share this with you.

Tip for you or anyone using a Fidanza flywheel: They say that the green coating on the steel friction surface is just protection that will wear away on first use--don't believe it. Take some acetone or brake cleaner and wipe the green stuff off before you install the clutch--at least where the friction clutch material will touch it. Mine melted(!) to the clutch pads on first use, and would not release. That green stuff is a thin layer of plastic, so it just melts as it gets warm. I had to take everything apart and pry the clutch disk off the flywheel using a flathead screwdriver. I was able to reuse everything, no damage. But what a pain to have to drop the trans twice.
Kudos to both of you on modifying your trajectory to do the trans service right. It's a bit more time, but it will be worth it when you get to keep driving it later on.

Well noticed a few things on this video that were cool, first the kid coming over to lend a hand, she did an awesome job cleaning off the housing, you could almost eat lunch off it now. Second the road trip in Tye Nova don’t care if it’s the 4 door version I’d be road tripping it to. Third that toy hammer Aaron you’re going to really appreciate that when you’re taking apart a transmission when you hit the housing and you don’t crack it. Those cast aluminum pieces are a little sensitive, also find while doing a project the more you dig the more you find. Had an old wooden porch on our property and it was a little spongy, took off a top layer and found the main joist at the one end had two fingers worth of wood holding it up, the one beside had three fingers worth. So I said that’s coming down, and noticed the roof over top had a lean to it and noticed it was being held up by the rotten decking material. So had to manage to hold that up with some bracing while I rebuilt things. Long story short I overbuilt the new front porch, we can have 6 adults standing on it at once and about 3 feet of snow resting on that portion of roof top without issue. Love that you’re taking your time and doing it right. And remember if you run into the issue of “ well where the heck does this go” just watch your video where you took it apart you’ll come across it.

Emily and Aaron I would recommend getting an 1/2 to 3/8 impact extension for when you doing transmission and bell housing work, Matco and Snap On both make them, Matco numbers for the 24" and 33" are CXP24BBL and CXP33BBL , sorry I don't have the Snap On numbers. If you add 3/8 impact wobble sockets to the them you can get in a really tight spots compared to the 1/2 impact wobble sockets. I know even the 3/8 wobble sockets are expensive but I think the Harbor Freight and Gear Wrench ones would probably be okay for the amount of use that you would need out them. Also longer regular extensions tend to wind up like a torsion bar when used on a impact with any power. I get nervous when I watch you guys using a regular non impact u joint swivels and non impact sockets,. I don't see to need to see you guys getting shrapnel from a conventional socket or u joint in the face or teeth, don't ask me how I know. Aaron and Emily take care, I enjoy your videos!

Those "toy hammers" don't bounce back on impact. They transfer all the power in a swing to whatever they hit. The bronze hammer is because bronze is softer than anything you might want to hit with a hammer so it won't damage the struck item.

I used to get mad about all the added things I had to fix when working on a different issue altogether. I now call them the list of "While You are At its", which I heard somewhere, from some CZcamsr car guy or gal. After thinking about it, as you say in a Derek-ism, "Mozzel" Fix'em While You are At It. It costs you less to fix it at the time you are at it, since it will either get worse and cause bigger issues and time, and the prices of parts for cars don't get cheaper as they age, they go up as parts get scarce. Great Job so far! I really have very little interest in owning a Vette, but its fun watching the build anyway. Unless its a 63 Split window...

Loved seeing you all driving the Nova, again. Not that I'm a chevy guy, I do like all older cars. But seeing you 2 going down the road. Reminded me of your videos of when you bought it and the trauma at the end for Aaron! Glad to see your smiling faces!!

Glad to see y'all are in the discovery mode and curing those issues! Happy Trails Guys on your Vegas trip! Prayers and blessing as well!

When you have broken or substandard parts; it makes the build that much more difficult to do especially when its a transmission on a Corvette... Good to see the both of you working steady again.... From the home of PB Blaster Silicone spray... Cleveland, Ohio.........

Emily, I would like to send you a set of forearms pads, I have for you wear with your gloves. Keep your beautiful arms free from scars like I have. I wish the best for both of you. Sincerely, Bryan.
