  • It's time to take old furniture and make it new! My garage is full of our old furniture that is no longer my style and I'm finally starting to refinish and update what we have to fit into my current decor style. A lot of the furniture is great quality, it just may not be what I'm looking for right now.
Updating the bottom half of this hutch and turning it into a modern sideboard that perfectly fits our family room took a bit longer than I thought it would, but I'm so happy with the result!

Next time, if you're going to paint, then using the same caulk you used for in between the dowels (half-round molding) to fill the holes is quick and it dries fast. You can caulk and paint an hour later. Just have to use an acrylic paintable caulk - paint won't stick to silicone caulks.

I'm going to need to start asking you questions before I do things! I'm just learning about so much of this and hoping it works out 😅
I'm looking into wood bleach right now for our dressers, any words of wisdom?

@@nicolenieves First thing run off to Home Depot and get a pair of disposable painters coveralls - they're a one-piece zip-up made of Tyvek material. The chemicals are pretty nasty and you don't want to be worried about getting them on your clothes. Wipe down the wood with mineral spirits before starting your bleaching. Let that dry for a day or so.
Start off with regular bleach because it's the least aggressive & dangerous of the normal wood bleaching chemicals. But, get liquid pool shock from Walmart. That's 10% vs regular Clorox household bleach which is 5%. I wipe it on vs using a brush. It's easier to spread it evenly and keep from splotching or having the wood come out unevenly. If you get the bleaching action you want, then you won't need to use any of the harsher chemicals. Wear goggles and gloves. Rinse it all with a 50/50 mix of water & white vinegar. If you don't the bleach can leach out later into whatever finish you end up using. Sand it with 120 & then 180 grit sandpaper after it's dried.
If that isn't light enough for you, then you need one of the two-part wood bleaching solutions. These are lye & peroxide so they're pretty nasty. Lots of fresh air and although a respirator isn't required, it's not a bad idea. Wipe it on with a rag. Don't let it puddle. You're trying to keep the bleaching action consistent. Same rinse with water & vinegar and sanding.
If you need even more bleaching & don't want to just repeat one of the above treatments you can use oxalic acid. That's seriously nasty stuff and you'll need to do it on concrete because it will eat away at a lot of stuff - use a glass bottle, jar or dish to mix it as it's reactive with metals. You need a respirator if you use this stuff. Make sure it's rated for organics and has a charcoal filter. You'll need the vinegar rinse after this one too.

@@jimhatch5873 WOW so detailed!! You should start a channel! I'm in the process of sanding now, I'll need to save this for when it comes to that point, thank you 😊
