Bobby’s complaint about his opponents pre-arranging draws probably wasn’t paranoia. That was and still is very common in high-level chess. It saves mental stamina for more important matches.

A draw during a candidates tournament is only damaging for both players.
After all: Only the victor of the tournament is going to play for the championship.
Therefore only victories are helping you, draws are already not good enough.
It would make no sense at all to pre-arrange draws during such a tournament as it would only damage both players.
This make no sense at all.
But if you like to believe in the paraniod thinking of a well known madman then what can one do about it?

    • @Dalibansoldier
      @Dalibansoldier Před rokem +2

It was, and still is, but you are equivocating. Bobby's complaint was that his opponents were arranging draws with each other before the games specifically to ruin his chances of winning tournaments. The intentional drawing that goes on in chess today is very different. Though it makes the sport less interesting, top chess players make draws against each other to mitigate the risk of losing one's OWN game and in doing so running the risk of ruining a tournament. The reason for the draws is to ensure ones own chances to win tournaments rather than to collude against an opponent. This type of drawing has no direct premeditation between the parties, where Fischer's opponents would have verbal agreements before the game that they would draw. It is very, very different.

That wasn't the accusation, the accusation was they did it to make sure he lost. I think this was just an example of an insecure 20 year old making excuses for his poor performance. Nobody feared Fischer outside of the US in 1962, especially no one in Russia.

I think that when you are labeled as a genius at something, this has the potential to become obsessed with the details and to be a true genius you are by nature become hard to deal with because of the success you obtain a high level in your introverted ego, that is why it's unfair to compare your self with a pro athlete because, there is most certainly a gift from a higher power ie ,God's gift because of the gift the ego inflates and the person becomes by default harder to deal with, and because the man is imperfect because the massive ego makes the individual think that he is more or better than everyone one else, but thier are two factors the jealous of others that want to be like him and the fact that because of the gift you have at least a 50 percent chance of self destruction, by the way I think that even the most stable person at one time or another at least once in a while feels that he's not sane

Some of his chess demands were totally legitimate such as better lighting conditions when playing these long 5 hour matches. The situation with the pre-arranged draws had to do with when he played many Russian players in a tournament, his contention was that they would draw against each other in order to save energy and worked together to make sure that Fischer would lose in the tournament or at least have a more difficult time. Some of these things weren't necessarily examples of paranoia. He didn't trust many people because he felt that people took advantage of him because of his celebrity and talent and most likely his troubled childhood factored in to his distrust of people. His paranoia seems to have become more acute later in his life. Also, remember, Bobby did everything himself regarding his chess and studying for these matches. His genius and work ethic led to his championship level chess but also made for a really lonely life.

@@chrisdonegan428 Bobby was only 16 years old in 1959 and had not yet reached his most dangerous heights against the Russians. The Russians did in fact collude to draw against each other to save their energy for Fischer. This was proven by KGB documents. Petrosian, who admitted agreeing to draws in advance, meekly tried to defend it:" We are not gladiators". Bobby rightly complained that the players were analyzing their games out loud afterwards at the table, which was very distracting, but Golumbek, the arbiter, did nothing.
That's the last time Tal ever did that to Bobby and in fact, Bobby beat Tal in their Curacao Candidates matches in 1962. Botvinnik had never played Tal before, but one year later, in 1961, Botvinnik demolished Tal to regain the championship. Tal never again reached his peak, largely because of health issues and the fact that many of his strange and complicated sacrifices were later proven to lead to losing positions with correct analysis.
In the Curaçao Candidates' tournament in 1962, in a Sports Illustrated manifesto (“The Russians Have Fixed World Chess”), by Bobby, claiming a rudimentary grasp of Russian allowed him to sniff out their cheating: “They would openly analyze my game while I was still playing it. It is strictly against the rules for a player to discuss a game in progress, or even to speak with another player during a game - or, for that matter, with anyone.” Fischer also posed that the format of the tournament was problematic as it allowed the numerous Soviet players to collude in a series of draws and fixes, saving their energy for the finals. His suspicions were validated by several witnesses, including a Soviet grand master. I repeat: " His suspicions were VALIDATED by several witnesses, including a SOVIET GRANDMASTER. "
As a member of both the Marshall Chess Club and the former Manhattan Chess Club (Bobby's longtime chess club), I know several top players who knew Bobby , including Masters and Grandmasters, some who were former Russians. It was common knowledge that that the Russians cheated and colluded against Bobby Fischer. The fact that he was able to completely demolish the Russians to win the Interzonal and then the Candidates Tournament to take on Spassky in 1972, despite their cheating, says all you need to know about his true greatness. But that in no way minimizes the Russians penchant for cheating.

No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love [a]Him because He first loved us.

Agreed. Dr. Grande's analysis sounds most plausible to me as well. As Dr. Grande indicated, although chess seemed to have caused him some stress, at least the competitive part, it also likely to a large extent spared him a likely worse life than what he had. It seems like despite his psychological problems, it was actually because of his chess abilities and fame that people around the world would yet give him some support. Whereas, had he not been good at chess, he might have ended up homeless or low income as maybe unlikely to hold down a job well, and not much support.

If his mother was spied on by the FBI, then it doesn’t seem like she was behaving in a paranoid way. If Bobby was also spied on as a child, it would explain why he would not want to be watched or filmed. His sensory sensitivity and wanting to control conditions while playing chess do lean towards asd. Throw in ocd and obsessing over one special interest with such amazing focus. Well, it’s hard to say now even in hindsight isn’t it? When you have quirky behaviour or poor social skills people really do say a lot of mean things about you, to your face as well as behind your back. I dare say he was correct about people talking about him if he was arguing with them the whole time. Well it’s all academic now I guess 🙂🐝

See that you are not troubled; for [a]all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, [b]pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. matthew 24:9-14

Excellent presentation! From my very limited observations as a modest chess player myself, I saw that Bobby Fischer spent a good deal of time with Mr. Brady, his wealthy benefactor, as a young man, for many years and also with Larry Evans and Fr. William Lombardi (strong GMs) for large time segments during his preparation and Championship match and seemed to be fully functional. His long history of play in many social settings seemed fairly normal and his obsession with playing conditions and monetary compensation were actually necessary and certainly raised the standards for all professional players-all very admirable traits. His "delusions" about Russian collusion was factual, not fantasy. The Russians dominated the chess world and fanaticlly tried to stop Fischer from winning becaused it threatened the Socialist model of superiority. They actually did conspire to draw with each other to conserve mental energy, while working hard to defeat other rivals. I think, over time, the high level of chess strain has damaged many other players minds such as former world champion William Steinitz.

      Jesus is love
And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.
17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love [a]Him because He first loved us.
20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, [b]how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.
      1 john 4:16-21
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. romans 8:37-39

I feel for Bobby Fischer. When I was 15 I fell hard for the music group Chicago. Their music opened doors in my mind that I didn't know existed. Music filled in where high school was failing and providing me an escape from a horrible home environment. I guess you could say I was obsessed. My parents went one step further than shoving me into therapy to cure me; they threatened to put me in either a mental institution or home for wayward girls if I didn't stop obsessing. I didn't, and it was only after my cousin intervened with "she doesn't smoke or drink, and she is out at all hours of the night with boys doing whatever. She could be worse off than liking a rock group." I think my parents made me a little schizoid, but I can tell you I never treated my children the same way.

Jesus told us first! Jesus' Words are coming true today amen
as The Bible God's Word is true even this is fulfilled, Jesus loves you!
And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. matthew 24:4-14

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The idea is that it is an investment that will never pay off in any way, whether or not the original idea was financially sound, seemingly cost effective and, ultimately, either "right" or "wrong"--the reason being that those last two words cannot figure into the calculation.
Heavily investing in an ideology that is subsequently proven wrong or misguided would be an excellent analogy to that same idea, and just as psychologically costful as the same idea would be financially costful in a similar, analagous situation.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God

This is so odd: I listened to a podcast yesterday about Bobby Fischer, then rewatched Pawn Sacrifice (his biopic), watched clips of his interviews on late night shows, and was reading about him on the internet. Dr. Grande is a mind reader now.

I watched some old footage of Fischer on a talk show in the early 70s. He seemed quite shy and polite. But when he was asked to demonstrate moves and end games on the board, he moved the pieces with such confidence and deliberateness, discarding pieces as he went. You could just tell he was a genius.

YAY! Thank you so much! Fisher is my hero because of his excellence in chess in spite of his mental health challenges. I think that many of his "crazy" pre-game demands are actually strategic moves to intimidate his opponents somehow. Thanks again, cheers!

Kasparov spoke eloquently about this to Lex Fridman. In terms of rating comparison with his peers Bobby is the greatest ever. But in terms of longevity it's Kasparov. In terms of pure rating it's Carlsen. My personal fascination with and preference for Bobby is that he achieved it all against the odds, you could almost say single handed, especially compared with the others.

    Dr. Grande,
Bravo! Bobby Fischer has been a person of interest in my own life for longer than I can recall. I have always felt a level of compassion for him to be such a tremendous talent and genius within the world of chess during the Cold War and how he and his mental health may have been manipulated by the United States. Your analysis struck me as a remarkable way of seeing into the psyche of such a complex individual without the often necessary (and hilarious) candor of the “celebrity” of this day. As a viewer, for quite some time, I value this interpretation of the psyche very much and the work that you put into this was phenomenal and commendable. Thank you for your work, Dr. Grande.

  • @bashbrannigan

As always his analysis pretty good, but a few important things are missed. First, International Master Lawrence Day a contemporary of Fischer said he was beaten by the Los Angeles police and this experience affected and deepened Fischer’s emotional problems. Second, despite Fischer’s frequent unreasonable demands, his demands are directly responsible for improving playing conditions and especially improving prize money. Third, the Russian did cheat including fixing results to help compatriots in tournaments. Also, Fischer was one of the first (likely the very first) full time chess player to make a living solely from chess without government help. Finally, by all accounts, Fischer could be very friendly as many would attest and was not anti-social.

Ahhh my two favourite things, chess and psychology. I played chess all through high school, and this guy reminded me of Fischer he played in the big tournament against me a couple times. He took the game so serious because he won every tournament. The time he lost against one kid who was very intelligent and played at the high school level in 5th grade, it caused him to be so mad he started banging his head against the wall. I got upset at times, but I never got to the point of harming myself, but that stuck with me. Though I don't agree with all of his actions, Fischer is definitely one of the best if not the best. He was one of the first figureheads I learned about.

@@mrs.reluctant4095 You are too cute😊. He's a very good author. I particularly enjoy his early, funny, works: Decline and Fall, The Ordeal of Mr. Pinfold, Scoop, Put Out More Flags, Black Mischief, etc. But then, I don't know very many German authors, just Thomas Mann, Gunther Grass, and Hermann Hesse, so our culture only exposes us to certain influences. Have missed your comments. Hope you were doing something fun, like a vacation.
