HALF Of The YARD Was OVERGROWN With BLACKBERRIES! Blackberry Mulching!

- Today we took on this nasty overgrown property with lots and lots of blackberries! The previous owners neglected to maintain the backyard and the blackberries took advantage! The new owner desperately needed help and thankfully we were able to come and save his yard and allow him to keep doing other more important projects. The Stihl FS-561C is a powerhouse weed eater for any lawn mowing needs!

Excellent. Just don't walk barefoot on the property ever again.
You couldn’t walk on it barefoot before😅
Keep it mowed a year or two it'll be fine
2 or 3 good wet seasons and it will be fine, the regrowth on the other hand will need at least one goat, Maby two
Some people don't know how vicious blackberry thorns are. They'll be there for about a decade before they finally decompose.
If you want to keep people out of an area. Plant a blackberry hedge.
One month later: the new blackberries are absolutely beautiful! 😂
That’s why you don’t wait a month to decide to take action. Treat it like a lawn!

@@fostermenelik1456I’m wondering the same thing. I don’t like the trigger on them but I run the echo PAS 225 and on jobs like this id run the PAS-2620 which is 25.1cc and rips thru black and wineberry quite nicely. Though I made an observation and it may be the head on the steel. See he kept his guard on? Only time I ever said to anyone I would never take the guard off is running a stihl with the circular saw blade attachment for light brushwork and I wouldn’t doubt that he wasn’t using that for a job like this.
Has nothing to do with the brand. It’s the blade he’s using. There’s brush conversion kits

@@rustyshackleford1083 I would get a lot of FRESH wood ash from somewhere, Kills blackberry plants dead, if the soil is alkaline the plant can't make new leaves and roots.
We had a problem with them growing on our holiday property, when my Nanna gave the property to my dad, she didn't tell him everything she knew about the place. Three or four years later, he mentioned to her that along the bottom fence line a heap of black berry vines were growing. She said "Oh, spread some of the wood ash at their roots for a few weeks". Dad flew me out to the island that weekend with instructions, I cleaned out our firebox, asked neighbours for their ash. Put it around the roots of each vine. Went back and did it again at the start of winter. When we went down the first weekend of spring, the vines were virtually dead, a couple more doses and they snuffed it.
Then it was the job of us kids to clean the fire box and go looking for black berry plants.
Interestingly, there are a couple of native plants that LOVE alkaline soil, and they would then grow up to replace the black berries. One of which is called pig root, and we DID get wild pigs in the property one of the winters, and they dug up the pig root.
@@golovinpropertyservicesone's. What model cutter is that you are using? Job well done.
@@golovinpropertyserviceswhat kind of tool head did you use on that? Is it a regular weed eater?
You cleared his blackberry crop of all the dead canes from last year. Just saved him a ton of work. Now he will have a fresh crop of canes and berries next year
True
Pretty close! What will happen is there will be new cane growth next year, but it takes another full year of growth cycle for a cane to produce flowers. That means two full growing seasons will see fruit, then it'll be a perpetual cycle of yearling canes coming up surrounded by two- and three-year-old fruiting canes. Either way, this property owner has so many roots established - they'll have so many options on where to set up the patch!
In Orygun we are of the opinion that the Blackberries we started by the Russians to take us over. If you want to kill them for good spray them with full strength Apple Tree dormant spray. The berries hate Sulpher and won't come back for many years or ever if you keep up the spraying. Blackberries are a huge PIA for farmers here.

I can assure you that I never planted any blackberries & like walking barefoot as much as possible. Doing pretty well with most of the grassy areas and don’t have any / many plants or trees with sharps that can get into the areas where me & my daughter walk around. Have to pick up some pine cones/sticks a couple times per year, have taken out a few Hollie type trees and 1 of those trees that has the spiked gum ball things on it but that about it. Beyond the tree line, I pretty much just let nature take its course.Unless I notice something that needs to be addressed. Anywho..Whatever type of briers we have in that area i mentioned ,they are like none I’ve ever encountered before. Some bigger around than my thumbs and 15’+ ,base to tip .If you get anywhere near them, they will grab you and not let go! They are horrible! When we first moved onto the property in the winter of 2011/2012 (clear cut for timber in 1993 & not replanted, for some reason.?. A cut over ,I believe it is called..After getting to know the nice neighbors a little, the husband with a good sized John deer tractor, offered to bush hog them when he noticed that they were beginning to get out of control. Fall of 2013,spring of 2014. Somewhere in there. I took him up on the offer, but didn’t follow up with any sprays or anything else..didn’t know they would come back even worse than before. Live and learn!FF to about 1 month ago..Had around a 2.5 week dry spell, so I decided to try out some chemical I bought a few years ago & never used..no wind, nice weather..An experiment..2 ozs per gallon of water I think the directions said the mix ratio was. Whatever it was, I mixed just 1 small sprayer with mfg recommended mix ratio + a extra dollop.was able to walk the 100’ at a quick pace & redefine that section of the circular driveway & stopped, repressurize the gallon sprayer 2 more times ,walking the same 100’ back the other way at a slower pace wetting everything I could reach with the sprayer. Tops, bottoms anything I could get to.The wilting started that day & everything that was sprayed is dieing down..& then some. Might still be spreading back.Slight down hill slope.Take a wide angle picture from the same spot every now and then as a sort of timeline..I have a bigger /better sprayer,& more of the chemical. Also have some large pallets that need to go somewhere. I am Trying to do as much of the work as possible on my own. Was thinking about taking the 10” pallets and laying them on top of the stuff that is dieing down as a walk way & spraying the rest of the briar patch + the few small trees that have popped up . What do you think of that idea?& afterwards?eventually, I am envisioning a fenced in area with some raised bed vegetable gardens & some sort of small structure in the middle to keep a few hand tools & have a spot of shade,a few chairs, table, maybe a small water feature with some fish . It would be a nice place for something like that. A place to sit in the evenings and maybe grill or have a drink or something. Possibly after the briar patch is under control, have a couple loads of fines delivered, spread & tamped. Build up from there..Would love a pros opinion.. Thanks for sharing this job with us. We just penned up the area, let the farmer down the road put 3 pigs in the area. We built them a house with straw and cedar savings to sleep in and the did not only eat the blackberry vines, but uprooted the roots snd all. Bonus we got a slab of pork belly in the fall as a thank you for taking care of the pigs.
That's a really good idea. I had a farm market and I would give all my scrap to the neighbor for his pigs. End of the season I'd always get some chops for all the nutritious food he received for pigs.
And the pigs will turn over the soil. We had hard soil until the pigs got into it. I heard a farmer say that a pig snout is a crowbar attached to four pistons. He's right. Ten small hogs would have turned that fenced area into bacon in no time, and likely taken many of the roots with them.

Yes. In in my area you can even rent goats for that purpose. Basically the 4x4 version of pigs
We used to have 3 pigs. We too, built them a house of straw. Anyway, long story short, we ended up building one out of bricks.
