As someone who's shy and anti-social, I relate so much to Barclay's struggle as do many fans I think. That line about the potted plant is too real man. I always liked the episodes that took a WAY different path from the usual ship-in-danger or aliens plots. Great character study too - there has to be at least ONE nervous person that doesn't fit in so perfectly like everyone else does. Makes it all more real too.

The debut of Barclay speaks to me …. It came at a time were life events had slow crushed me into an introvert …. My father’s last years of naval service had seen me go to four different school systems in three years… afterwards he had gotten a job in a hospital and for 7th and the first half of 8th grade i took a city bus to school. Over the winter break we moved again. I was given the choice of going to a different middle school or catching rides to my old one…. I chose to catch ride….. that was probably a mistake because as it turned out when it came time for high school i only knew 3 people where if i had switched middle school i would have had six months to make friends, friends that lived in my nee neighborhood , thats how i see myself in Barclay….. someone who can only excel when no one is watching…

They did have to take some basic engineering at the academy, I think. However, what's at play is their knowledge of the ship. One of the plot points for a later episode (this isn't really a spoiler - it's part of the premise) is someone wanting to get a promotion. They have to learn basically every system of the entire ship and be prepared to take charge during a variety of emergencies, including in engineering, making use of their knowledge. Basically, Riker and Picard know the entire ship and its systems almost as well as Georgi and Data do.

19:35 It is _absolutely possible_ to separate the _Enterprise-D_ while at-warp. In fact, you saw that very thing happen in _TNG's_ pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint, Part 1"!
I've had a working fan theory for some years now that the Galaxy-class starship was specifically built to have such an emergency separation, due to how the warp engines and the navigational deflector dish work, yet the Saucer Section does not have or need its own warp engine nacelles to do such!
The problem presented in "Hollow Pursuits" does still follow my fan theory, and Cmdr. Data even states it in dialog: the warp engine _imbalance_ makes such a separation impossible, because the warp field itself (which _nobody can physically see except for_ computer displays) is not behaving in a _predictable_ manner. The imbalanced warp field could literally tear the Saucer Section to pieces as it passes through that [invisible] bubble of controlled space-time distortion, and then the debris would collide with the Battle Section!
