- Was this hoodie a success? I'm not so sure! Also I had trials and tribulations with a Bum Bag/Fanny pack pattern this week but due to the fabric not the pattern.

The more I think about the pocket the more I realise that having one size pocket seems to be the norm for all patterns I've made whether you make a 6 or 24 the pocket piece is always the same. Oh Carol that made me howl with laughter about Chris putting his arms in 🤣🤣. The bum bag is just as noisy believe me, I have to admit it was a fail! Back to the drawing board, Katie will just have to use an umbrella to protect it 🤣. I am so pleased with myself for getting the courage to join the group, I also can't walk as far with Mickey these days. I used to walk about 2 hours a day with him so at least I will still get the fresh air plus meet new people! The other dog was my son's and called Rory. Hi Carole. You always get so much done. I love the hoodie…the two do look different in the different fabrics. I think the weight and stretch makes such a difference. I have tried this once…. Instead of using the laminating sheets for fabric…I use beeswax. Basically, I get the beeswax beads place them on the fabric, use was paper or parchment fabric and melt the beeswax with the iron. It makes the fabric water “ resistant” but, I wouldn’t swear it’s waterproof. Over time I’ve read it needs to be reapplied although, I’ve never had to add any the pouches I’ve made. People suggested Odicoat to me and I am trying that, not sure how I feel about the finished result. I think I'll just risk it to be honest as Katie wants a few made 🤣. Lots of fun life changes. I love walking but actually prefer to walk by myself. I walk very fast, love walking up and down hills, and really just want to walk not talk. I do go out for walks with my husband and the dogs everyday. I think the new sweatshirts looks great, the pocket is even OK.
How wonderful that you enjoy walking on your own and do so much of it. Like you I also walk my dog everyday but as he is getting older I can't do the distances with him anymore and going forward I know I will miss walking when he isn't around 😔. The hoodie looks very cosy and comfortable despite the chest high pocket 😂. It will be a good one to wear fireside at the new holiday park model. You can hide a whole crisps bag in there to keep them for yourself 😉. Congrats on switching from the travel camper to something close to home. We gave up our little travel trailer after my husband had a head injury and I just couldn't do all the planning, prep, and driving myself. Never mind parking it !!! Last year we got a cabin size tent with 2 cots but we haven't used them yet. 🤞 for this summer. Enjoy your 'rambling'. I walk about 6km every other day but just along the river here in town. Oddly enough its called the Thames 😂😂😂😂.
Ha ha Nancy, it is indeed a chest pocket 😂. I did have our caravan in mind when I made it I will admit. The beginning of the season could be chilly. Crisps, popcorn I could have a whole food cupboard in there! Chris and I have caravanned our whole married life so it really is the end of an era for us. We just found we used it less and less and it was too small for any of the family to borrow plus they didn't have the cars to tow it. This way, even my parents can enjoy the caravan and the views so its a win win i hope! You will know how difficult it is to part with it by the sounds of it. Good luck with your tent in Summer. Hi Carol, I love your sweatshirt, beautiful color. There is a product called.Odicoat by Odif, it’s a Gel Coating that you paint on your fabric and it’s waterproof and stain resistant. I’ve used it a few times, it gives a Matt surface.

I do have that sweatshirt pattern, thought how it could possibly be different than others, and there you go, a huge pocket, which I think is great fun and elevates a traditional sweatshirt. Loved it! Easy enough to make it bit smaller, I’m about your size. But just a bit. 😂 thanks, Carole. (Deb)
Thanks Deb for saying the pocket makes the sweatshirt a bit different, it really does 😂. It annoys me sometimes with patterns as they never account for the smaller sizes with the pockets, all pockets are always just the one size whether you are making XXS or XL! As you say, I should just use my common sense and make them smaller. Hope you have fun with that pattern! 🧵😊
Hi Carol! I like both your hoodies, even the giant kangaroo pocket! I seem to have lost my sewjo. I cut out a hooded cardigan and it is just laying there , not the first stitch have I done. I'm thinking I may make a quick little project, maybe a tee shirt to get me goin again. My husband is a musician, he plays Saxophone. Our son is a drummer, guitar player and singer. Our grand son,13, is playing Sax, piano, trumpet, and now has picked up the guitar! Our granddaughter, 10, is a good singer and will be great if she works at it. It's fun when we all get together, the family band. lol Have a great weekend!

Hi Deborah, it doesn't make sense about the pocket sizes but I have thought that many times with the Big 4 patterns, they are always the same size regardless if you are sewing a 6 or 22!! I could indeed stash dorset buttons, my thread cards and many other things in that pocket. Instead of piles of stuff on the stairs to go up I could just load up my pocket 😂, oh the possibilities are endless! Have a great week 🧵😊
Hi Carole. I like heatnbond fusible vinyl. I found it easy to work with, but i can't speak to the noise concern. I made a cosmetic bag, and haver it as a gift. I hope you have a lovely trip to Florida.

Hi Carole, your Hoodie looks cosy, you could hide a hot water bottle in the pocket, I don’t know if you’ve heard of (Odicoat ) I’ve just googled it as I couldn’t remember the name, I’ve never tried it but it makes fabric water resistant, they sell it Amazon,😊 your Caravan sounds lovely, we lived in a static caravan in our garden, for three years, while my husband built our house, it was quite an adventure, but as much as it was a relief to get in the house, my dream is to have a motorhome, Have a lovely weekend with your family X

I am sitting in the Ft Lauderdale airport waiting for our flight to Charleston and you have inspired me! My sister’s favorite bag for travel tore and frayed along a seam and I think Sashiko patch would be perfect way to mend it! Maybe waxed cotton would have worked better for a bum bag. Love the look as it creases. It gets a nice distressed look.
You must be in Charleston now! What a wonderful place that is. A Sashiko patch on a bag would look so pretty, give it a try. I tried to replicate the laminated cotton I had but Katie wanted specific fabrics that I had already (don't ask!!) hence I tried the vinyl. I will certainly look up waxed cotton though, thanks. 🧵😊xx

Love your hoodies! I have that pattern and it’s on my list to make, so thank you for sharing. I will have to think about the pockets, but I didn’t think they were too bad honestly:). I really love that you use the big four patterns, I’m not a fan of cutting and taping together pdf patterns! Hi Carole, I wonder if putting the vinyl coated fabric in the washer would soften it up a bit. You could try it on your scrap piece and see what happens. I’m sure your daughter will love it noise or not.

Congratulations on the static caravan sometimes it is nice to have a bit more space than a touring caravan has especially when it is raining. The grandchildren looked so cute in their tops and holding everything Pluto 😍 I love walking but can’t due to foot surgery that went wrong so in pain constantly 😕 anyway hope you enjoy it 👍

I've tried that iron on vinyl too and was disappointed. Besides the noise and the creases, it doesn't wear well and quickly becomes damaged. I haven't found any better solutions yet. I think your unusual fabric is cotton velour. Minerva has it. It's so soft and comfy. Your sweatshirt looks great in it. Quite the oversight on Simplicity's part to make a huge one size pocket!
Oh I am so glad it wasn't me with that vinyl, I was so disappointed like you. I read that it does damage easily so with something that is continually used isn't great is it. You are right about the fabric, it does feel like velour and yes, it is so soft and comfy! I often find with patterns that there is only one size for pockets which annoys me as they don't take into account that on a smaller item the pocket will look larger. Fab hoodie, annoying about the pocket size, they normally do two or three sizes to cover the ranges of sizing which is odd isn’t it? Odicoat works fab for painting onto non waterproof wovens to make the flexible but waterproofed. Love that you’ve joined a rambling club, i know how you love walking and spending time in the outdoors, so good for you! X

I think your hoodie came out really cute. Looks very comfy. Awesome pocket, yeah a bit large though. So exciting about your new holiday home. You will have to give a a little tour when you visit. I'm finishing up some winter sewing, then I need to get busy with the Easter outfits. I'm going to visit the baby girls and my grandson in three weeks and would like to bring their Easter clothes with me. For your waterproofing fabric...a thought. Some years ago there was a idea going around that you can soak damp fabric in watered down glue that would then dry soft enough to use but would be shower proof. Unfortunately I can remember no more than that, whether or not it worked I have no idea. Play if you are bored, sounds implausible, but who knows?

That hoodie is one of my favorite patterns. If you drop the pocket down an 1” or 1.5” by folding it down. I think it will look much better. You are so talented. Love watching your channel.
Thanks so much for that idea of lowering the pocket. That certainly would be worth doing I think just to lower it down as at the moment it is just under my bust which isn't a good look! It is a shame about that pattern as the basic shape of it is good and I was happy with the other one, apart from the drooping pockets but that again was geared for the larger sizes and not the small size. If you want to make another hoodie at any time the Stella hoodie from the stretch TATB book is very similar to your one but has a three piece hood so no points! It also has a normal size kangaroo pocket ….

Seriously, I never would have given a second thought about a one-size pocket pattern piece for a multi-sized hoodie. While I don't have that particular Simplicity pattern, I do have other hoodie patterns so I'll keep this issue in mind. Thanks, Carole! As for waterproofing anything, I use a spray on product called Scotch Guard. Works great! I used it years ago to waterproof my hiking boots before a week long backpacking trip in the Yosemite Wilderness (high country) where afternoon summer thunderstorms are quite common. Your daughter's fanny pack is very cute and very LOUD. A possibility (if you make another one in the future) would be to make one using a medium to heavyweight fusible interfacing to give the fabric stability, and then use Scotch Guard to keep it dry (assuming you have it or something similar in the UK). The downside might be a lingering odor for several days, but that should go away. I've used this product to waterproof a backpacking tent seams and the rainfly as well as my leather boots. I don't recall smelling any odor after allowing a thorough drying and airing out. Just a thought. Wondering if you can pick up some Disney fabric at a shop somewhere in Orlando or in a Disney property store for a future gift make. Maybe a trip to JoAnn's in Orlando would be do-able??? If not, I'd be more than happy to see if I could find some at my JoAnn's for you. Would probably be woven cotton, not a knit. Let me know. Hi Dori!! Hope you have had a good week? I hadn't thought of just using Scotchguard like I do on my walking shoes? Others have mentioned Odicoat, something you paint on. I may give that a go. Katie was so excited when she saw the bum bag....and then felt it!! 😱She wasn't sold!! I do have lots of other Disney fat quarters so I will just use those, I have just made a bag for me WITHOUT the vinyl and it is so much better! Thanks so much for the offer of fabric though, hopefully on our visit to Orlando next month I can actually go into JoAnns again 👏🏼 Honestly, it was such a big decision about buying this holiday home but it just makes sense to us so we are very excited about it. Just to be able to pop down there at weekends without having to pick up our caravan, pack it and tow it somewhere, pitch it etc will be heaven. I survived the "atmospheric river" that slammed the entire coast of California and turned hillsides into mud flows and some streets into lakes. Where I live, we got 5" of rain 2 days ago, but the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles (about 100 miles north of me) got 12" of rain!!! Three years ago we had a very severe decade-long drought situation going on. Now, too much rain! Meeting on Monday with a realtor to get my house on the market. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻@@socarole66

Is there something that you can paint on fabric to make it waterproof. I remember seeing the lady on Ithink it’s My Sewcial Thread, she made a baby bag when she was pregnant last year, I’m sure she painted something on the fabric

Oh Anne, it is so ridiculously noisy and Katie just laughed out loud when she tried it on! I am now making a couple more WITHOUT the vinyl. I have had so much teasing from my family about the walking group but as you say, if more people just got outside in Mother Nature with others to would certainly help a few more people to reduce stress!
