I've owned a Waterman (a Torsade) for 42 years now. It served me throughout all my written exams from A' levels right through graduate studies and a professional qualification. I still use it regularly now and it is a lovely pen. It's not a Carene but I jusr wanted to tell you about it 🙂
To avoid leaks, someone once recommended filling the convertor with a syringe (with the convertor removed from the pen, avoiding drawing ink through the nib). I have done this with my Carene, and the leaking has never recurred with this method. It’s minimally more work but worth it to me.
I have two Carene's one of fine and one medium - marine amber, and silver capped black. I have another one from an auction site so a I am not sure what that will be except it's blue.The pens are beautiful writers, just about the right weight for me. I carry one on flights and it is excellent, does not leak and writes straight out of my pen case. It is so elegant, perhaps much more elegant than other pens priced at the same level. I feel elegant when I pull out my Carene's. The fancy that you now have tickled is for a stub nib. Your writing is just beautiful
I just purchased a Waterman Amber Carene. And here is a review of this pen! There are no accidents! My other Black Sea Medium Carene is just a marvelous writing pen. When I saw this one for sale, I leaped at it. My only reservation with the Carene is that as a metal pen with a finish coat is subject to scratching which would be heartbreaking. I have really babied my current Carene and intend to do the same with the pen en route. Thank you for the review!

I've owned a Carene with a medium nib for about a decade. It's a very smooth writer - probably the smoothest nib I own - and I've never had any leakage problems with it.
Prices have been hovering around $160 in the US for a while now, limited to F and M.
Me too. After a long lusting over a Waterman Carene. Black Sea, I believe is the color, I grabbed one on sale in a miracle purchase. What a pen! Fabulous.
I thought the lacquer would have made posting it problematic, but it seems not. Gorgeous pen, beautiful writer.
I really like the appearance of that nib. While I prefer blue or brown colored pens, I must admit that the very dark red with some black mottling genuinely appeals to me on this pen. Very good looking pen. Thanks Stephen.
Magic recipe: Expel exactly four drops of ink, draw the air, done; as long as the converter seals.
I really like it, and the Marine Amber really needs to be seen in person. It is a very comfortable pen to hold and write with, and the section is long enough to accommodate where ever you want to hold it. Waterman is such an underrated brand, both for pens and inks. I really wish they made more noise because the nibs write so well. Finally, the Carene is one cool looking pen; just very different that the rest out there. What I have noticed; those who have used it, loved it.
Great review. I got one of these two weeks ago with a medium nib, and am loving it, very elegant. Quite a wet nib though. However, if I heard that right, the EUR price point seems kinda crazy. In the UK, the Marine Amber goes for £215 (250EUR) inc VAT, which I think is acceptable - and it's often on sale.
At around the £200 mark it competes with a Parker 51, Lamy 2000 or Vanishing Point / Capless, and I think it holds its own and should absolutely be considered. But at £400 it's competing with Sailor Pro Gear / 1911, Pelikan M800, Parker Duofold so I'm not sure the Carene would be my first choice - but beauty (and value) is in the eye of the beholder, and I wouldn't begrudge anyone getting one of these!
I think it can completely compete with a Sailor Pro Gear. A M800, no because that is a piston and larger pen. I the Carene better than the Pro Gear though.
The Targa was way better, steel nib and under $60 Canadian back in 1980’s
I was literally just researching and searching for this pen last evening. (I am currently in Indonesia). Anyway so when I woke up and saw this at the top of my feed, I thought the Google’s algorithms were messing with me and found this “old” video to show me. But no, new video! Great!!
I have seen pens from $200 to $400, $500 range, depending on the color. I turn 55 this year and I am building a 5 pen collection as a birthday present to myself and this is one of the pens I am considering. Thanks for this review. ✍🏾🙏🏾🌺
Mine is entirely black with gold trim. It writes well. Elegant and beautiful.
Thanks for a very good review. I think this is definitely an 'investment' pen. I spent around £160 and it's been worth every penny. This is now my personal pen, which I use all the time (constant projects!). I use cartridges with an EF nib. Very smooth overall. Occasionally the nib dries, so I gently squeeze the cartridge and this helps the nib work properly. I use the Carene daily, so it knows to cooperate! It's the best pen I have ever used, in a long line of fountain pens. Waterman and Cross have been my favourites for over thirty years.
Purchased a blue/silver (the color is very elegant) Carene a couple of months ago and love the feel and writing experience. Thanks again for a great review.
Well deserved! And is it a coincidence I bought 2 LE Carène’s this year, because I sold my brown one which was leaking and missed having a Carène? If I had known this trick, I probably wouldn’t have sold it. But now I own a Lagoon and Royal Violet, found on the second hand market. Beautiful pens. A bit slim, one nib is much better than the other, and the caps tend not to keep them from drying out. But I love to have and use them. Love, nr 2 in the Pen Quiz, tha looser😂

Very helpful review. I got a Carene M nib as a gift and had to search around for any info on it. The outside is a smooth gunmetal color. Has 8 serenity blue cartridge and a converter! I'm getting ready to clean it but I'm not quite sure if the inlaid nib needs special attention or if it even comes off to clean. It needs a cleaning for sure, I plan on starting with a good soak overnite in distilled water and using a bulb like regular pens to help flush it.

I own two of them since years, one F and one former M made into a stub. Both can handle inks with a wide range of surface tension, something not found often from other brands. The unique shape and the uncomplicated operation makes them perfect daily use pens. Meanwhile I own more fancy pens, but I always come back to one of my Carènes and enjoy the look and the feel ... and the style factor.
PS: Never ever did one of mine leak.

My Caren leaks also. I will try the expelling a few drops and see if that helps. I really like my pen.
Very Nice and confortable pen I bought à carène in september at Akerman store in Amsterdam for 235 euros, !
I would say ensure that the Waterman converter is either threaded or unthreaded. My vintage Laureate has a threaded converter, and when I used a modern unthreaded version, I had an ink mess. I later salvage the old converter by applying some silicone grease, and it works fine.
Thank you for sharing. Great pen! I find if I either expel three or four drops of ink after filling my pen, or while wiping excess ink off of the section and nib, the ink that is drawn from the nib is usually enough to keep the pen from leaking/“burping”. I usually do this with any pen I fill using bottled ink.

Thanks for another review! I’m curious if you have issues with the nib drying out. I own a Carene, an Exception and a few Hemispheres and they all seem to suffer from the caps not sealing well. If I don’t use them for a week, the converter might be completely dried out.
I have the same pen with a medium nib. Although it's a lovely pen, I"ve had some issues with leaking. I"ll try your suggestions. An ink I enjoy with this pen is Taccia Hokusai Benitsuchi, which is a brownish red. It seems to match the lacquer color quite well.
I was fortunate to buy one with the same finish and a fine nib a few years ago. I paid less than Cdn $150. A beautiful writer. Mine has never leaked.
Nice seeing this review and pen. Good job! This is my first “real pen“ purchase a few years ago. Love the color! I had not used it in a while because the nib is stiff and I was enjoying bouncy nibs. The nib is an oblique broad. I reached for it a few weeks ago. When I pulled the cap off, the nib section fell off. The plastic part was broken in half right where the metal part that holds the cartridge/converter ends. I don’t imagine it did this just out of meanness, but I remember no incident with it. I’m hoping the local store where I bought it can help me contact Waterman, and arrange for it to be repaired. Any suggestions?
I have a Waterman Carene in black with chrome trim - a really lovely pen! That said, the price you quote seems quite steep: in the UK, the model of the pen you are reviewing has a sale price of £224.96 (€261.96).
I have both the amber (med.) and the black (fine) and like everything about them. A beautiful sleek design, weight and finish that suit my taste. Quality pens and nice writers. I am a fan of Pelikan 800 series and have several but wouldn’t trade or sell these Watermans easily. 🇨🇦👍👨🦳
That price! Damn! I remember the time I paid just over €200,- for mine. Inflation is a b.
By the way, mine never leaked, and I do not let a few drops out after filling. Just write more. 🤪
It's a lovely pen. I have the same finish, but with a medium nib. The medium always seems to me to have a slight stubbish character, giving a bit of line variation.
I'm a big fan of inlaid nibs, from the Parker 65 through to the classic Sheaffers. I just really like the look. The only downside is they do take a bit more effort to get clean.
The price made me wince, but also very happy with what I paid for mine new off EBay - £120.
I have the exact same pen; stub nib and all. No leak problems. I really think this is the perfect pen as it checks all the boxes. Nevertheless I somehow keep buying the occasional pen. Shame on me.
For those of us that prefer the finial turned 180 degrees, you can fiddle with two rings at the section.
how did you get stub nib with this pen? rare option
I got a marine amber fine for 130 CAD (100 USD). It's a great pen but 414 Euros is way too steep
I always get a blob of ink on my index finger - think i must touch the end of the nib - any solutions?
I've had the same problem with this pen and with others with inlaid nibs. If you grip it too low, you will get ink on your finger as it touches the side of the nib. The solution? Grip it higher.

Lol 400+€ is a joke. I bought mine for £120 in 2017 (admittedly on sale). Beautiful writer but I wish I'd bought it in fine instead of medium as I would use it a lot more.
The Carene is a lovely pen. It was a step below the Edison but now is their flagship. It is a gorgeous pen. The nib is too wet for me, unfortunately.
I would also suggest Robert Oster's Royal Red ink as an alternative.
Carènes manage to make almost every other pen look old.
Targa did it better and for way less purchase price
Worst fountain pen ever, bought it from Pencity Melbourne, it wasn't a long lasting pen especially found waterman lost some of their values even with Expert fountain pen, it write aweslme but the metallic body and the glossy finish is just a paint just can't it granted noT cheap...the Samurai ones were good looking hut overly prized No piston filling only Cartridge...what!!! Not a novice though into the fountain pen world. Sad but true but the Meisterstuck series were the best from 1990s Le Grand 146, Boheme with Rouge twist mechanism, and indeed the Meisterstuck 149 90's version beyond fountain pen experience and eventually the LeoNardo sketch pencil from Meisterstuck wow. 80's Meisterstuck Solitire Gold fountain 146 was Da de the bestttttt. Everlasting rouge of enigma the royal penmanship. Sorry for errors seee can't type ohhh need a Fountain pen...looking for it in nexxxt reviews of Yours Fffffigarooo
