- What's happening here?
We turn up the resonance of the Minilogue's filter all the way, so that it self-oscillates (kinda like feedback) and creates a very nice sine wave. This is a thing it does. It is a good thing.
The pitch, or frequency, of this tone is now controlled by the filter's cutoff frequency. We click the Key Track parameter up to its full amount. This adjusts the filter's cutoff frequency a tiny bit for every note on the keyboard. With Key Track at full, we can play the filter's cutoff frequency, and therefore the frequency of our tone, chromatically.
So: our filter is producing a sine wave that we can play with a regular ol' keyboard. The sine wave is tuned to the same note as the initial saw wave. It pretty much buries the saw wave underneath it, but you should play with different wave forms that 'support' the resonance! You may need to retune the filter.
We introduce the Minilogue's delay, and we recommend you do the same. By setting the time relatively short, and turning the feedback up, we now have some lo-fi fizzle, and the notes can beat against one another. You may have to play around until you find a sweet spot where the notes bloom but don't get out of hand.
The melody seems to be in some kind of F minor key, but we don't know things about notes. Get a feel for all the 'good' notes in the tune, and explore all of the tiny variations that we didn't cover.
Come out, and live in a synthetic community in the anodyne.institute in the country. - Hudba
Rest assured that the member responsible for the delay in this video has been properly disciplined. They're currently spending time in an Annex of Solitude, with an Akai S1000 sampler and zero access to analog BBD-style delays. Thank you for your concern.
A fate worse than death itself
Voss We agree that life without BBD delays would be less colorful. We must also clarify that an Annex of Solitude is typically a cabin in the rural countryside. The disciplinary process consists of exposing our members to new electronic instruments in a peaceful environment.
@@anodyneinstitute A beautiful place out in the country you might say. Suffice to say I've just subscribed.
@@Stop_being_younger_than_me Hi! I'm not familiar with the GAIA, but looked it up real quick for reference. The core of this sound is just a slightly imperfect sine wave. In this instance it's provided by the filter's resonance turned up to the max, producing a tone. Not all filters will do this, but check through the GAIA's engines to see if one is capable. Resonance up, see if it makes a tone on its own. You will need to apply 100% keyboard tracking to the filter cutoff so that you can play it melodically.
If this doesn't work, perhaps one of the engines simply has a sine wave oscillator in addition to the more common saw, pulse, triangle? A slightly filtered triangle might do the trick as well.
I noticed that the GAIA has an effects engine, and it may help you achieve this character as well. Try running a sine or triangle waveform into a subtle reverb, and then try adding very subtle distortion or bit-crushing as the last effect in the chain. This may give the sound a lo-fi BoC quality.
Let us know if we can help in some other way. Have fun!
@@anodyneinstitute Thank you for the help I was able to get quite close!
Being a die-hard BoC fan, I bought a Minilogue after watching this video. This was my first hardware synth, and even though I sold it some years ago, I want to thank you for this video, as after buying a Minilogue I understood that feeling of playing hardware synths and now I'm totally into it! :) Thank you so much!
That's awesome, glad to hear it!
What do you use now? I’ve had the minilogue for like, shit, 4 years now!? It’s my only poly synth and I’m itching for more voices.
@@saturatedneowax I used to have a lot of synthesizers since then - Roland D-05, Korg Kross 2, Moog Matriarch (still regret selling this one, but really needed money). Now I use Moog Subsequent 25 as my main mono/duophonic synth and ASM Hydrasynth Desktop for everything else, pretty happy with both!
I can hear the drums come in in my head 😁
Guys. There can never be enough delay.
After delay comes procrastination.
@@hermask815 You're right, I've been thinking about that ! :-)
love the little "no no" finger wag on the wrong note haha, very nice video!
lol I was almost expecting a little bonus performance of kaini industries at the end of the tutorial, after having played the album thru many dozens of times its like a Pavlovian reaction
I feel this!
Everyone saying too much delay....uh not enough delay
this is my favorite comment

I love Boards of Canada. I could have just sat and watched you play that for hours and hours lol. Well done. I'm gonna give it a go.
You just made a rhodes with your minilogue!
beautiful.
Well done for the way you pointed at each control, paused, then changed each one. I have seen many tutorials with hands obliterating the synth controls, rendering the video next to useless. Nice work ☺️
Sounds great! I kept wanting for the beat to come in!
just perfect. getting this synth soon so excited.
Seeing those waveform will really help me set my oscillators on my Roland Jd-xi thanks!
Thanks, man!! Now i know how to make a sine wave in Minilogue! (Great video!!)
That's proper ace. Not only for patch creation but for how to play as well. Great job!
Dude this is fantastic. Please more videos like this!!!
Nicely done! A lot of these BoC sounds can be really difficult to approximate (at least for me). A agree that there's a bit more delay, as other comments have pointed out, but actually, I kind-of liked it better that way. It sounds more bell-like with the extra delay on.
You just made me love the minilogue even more. Thank you!
Yay!
Nice work! Thank you for the tutorial!
im so stoked to know that the minilogue can produce BOC sounds. I just bought one and hope to make music like BOC, Faex Optim and PBS73.
Good tutorial. Sounds very good.
Awesome!!!! Love BOC and love my Mini!!!
Bro thank you so much!! That trick with the filter is awesome :D Just tried it with operator in ableton and it worked (with the filter in MS2 mode and freq key 100%) Thanks!
:D That's awesome to hear. Have fun!
Just wonderful
AWESOME AND FUNNY JOB! Congrats mate! I`m subscribed fo' mo'
Great! I love this kind of simple tutorial.
A true magician/musician.
sounds great
So beautiful and warm. Always think they use so many layers, but it's not.
I really want to get one of these!
I mean really making the sound all by yourself is amazing
Holy shit
As a beginner to synthesis, it blew my mind seeing a since wave created on something I've made instrument patches on intensely already.
gorgeous
I'm gonna git that minilogue. It's so rad.
Cool will try this on my new xd :-) thanks for sharing!
Well done
snapped!
Mind blown!
Ahhh, I love it! :D
Wha? You mean the synth didn’t make the background vocals too? Pshh.
J/K!
Sounds great!
I know people say “too much delay” but it’s not that. It’s the timing of the delay and the spectrum of it. It’d really sound better with some analogue recording equipment and not having an exactly synched delay! It’ll sound more human and less robotic, but you got the idea spot on!!
really cool !!!

Brilliant
Awesome work. These are such fun little synths. I wonder what BoC actually uses.
This video was probably the most helpful! Thanks a lot.
But I always wondered what the notes between 1:27 and 1:32 (Time of the original song) were. I couldn't find anything on the internet about this very specific part. Or complete transcript in gegneral.
Awesome
Good shit.
BoC will be engraved into my soul forever
Never seen the clipping envelope sounding so beautiful on the ML..

If you need to eliminate the clicking on the Minilogue go into programme edit - might be global edit and find the setting for ''portamento'' which is ''off'' by default, and set it to ''0'' zero , This is explained in the Sonic Lab review by Nick Batt - refer to the manual for the menu settings , my notes may not be totally accurate.
Let me know how you get along.

I don't own a synth but I have spent some quality time with this one it's pretty special
nice :) !!!
very nice patch. Close to the original. Nice Minilogue skills
The only reason I have kept my minilogue for as long as I have is I have yet to find an analogue (or VST) synth that actually sounds this good when the filter self-oscillates. So many wonderful songs I've created with this mode.
Thank you! Could you do a video like this using the minilogue for Identikit by Radiohead?!
Love this idea, and love that part of the song! I'll play with it and see if it translates to finger booping.
Fucking perfect, holy wow
"The melody seems to be in some kind of F minor key, but we don't know things about notes." hell yeah
Hey, can I make boc style music on a Mininova Novation?
Do you have a rough number for the delay knob settings? i.e. 3 o'clock etc. I'm close but cant quite get it
Sicckkkkk!
goose bumps @1.45
same
hmmm I read "Tutorial with Kylie Minogue" was surprised for a few moments
well firstly it's not delay it's decay and feed back, i think the high ends are clashing and thats why everyones confused, correct me if im wrong tho :)
What scale is it?
I'm the guy who made this on a deep mind and now I am going to remake it on the Rev 2!
:D have fun synthesizing!
Would you recommend korg volca keys and volca bass instead of a minilogue if I'm wanting to play music sounding like boards of Canada? I'm trying to cut costs.
honestly go for the minilogue. more polyphony and flexibility, better sound, keys and a great sequencer
Thanks.
trying to cut costs while delving into the world of synths? Yikes.
In all seriousness, this is a super nice beginner synth. Combine it with ableton and you can get infinitely more out of it.
Go for a Microkorg, if you want to cut costs. But the minilogue if far superior just because of the interface
I think it sounded perfect without the delay.
Starting patch? Really keen to try it out on my minilogue.
This patch begins with the default 'Init Program' on the Minilogue. The parameters are in preset positions, and only your physical changes to the knobs will be reflected in the sound.
@@anodyneinstitute yeah figured that out. Thanks for the reply. I have been stuck in my neutron for a bit so forgot what patches are like as it is all analogue. Awesome tutorial bravo!!!
Is it possible to do this with an access virus ti2?
I'm not too familiar with the capabilities of that synth, so I'm not sure! I think the secret ingredient is just a slightly 'unstable' sine wave with lots of character, which the Minilogue filter provides here. If the Virus has a sine wave oscillator, perhaps you can start there and try dirtying it up a bit. Have you got one to try it out on, or are you shopping around?
I haven’t tried the virus out but it will probably work on it.
If you like this music, and want to form a band like this, hit me up. BoC is my favorite band of all time (tied with one other). I'm looking for the Michael to my Marcus, the Kai to my Dom, the Sean to my Rob, the Martin to my Alan and the John to my Lou. If you get all the above references, we'll get on well. I can send some of my music and you can do the same. Realizing the power of a duo. xxx
i saw you on another video with the exact same comment. I do not know any of the people you mentioned. I do however love boc and their uniqe style and sinister tones. I've been looking for a partner to make music with aswell, but i've never stumbled on anyone good really. I've listened to boc for a while now and i've also tried making a couple of boc refrence tracks, and it has worked out pretty damn good imo ;P
@@sebastianwenberg8833 send me some stuff...I'd love to hear: sonnyrodneygrey@gmail.com
Oh My God or BoC....
omgBoC!
duuuuude wtf is going on here music theory wise been trying to figure out for ages, its like fmin, f harmonic min and f phryg all in one?????
All the emotions

And just like that I'm broke and ordered a minilogue :')

Not quite there.
too much delay! apart from that sounds good!
PLEASE TALK
