Making DIY Gumdrop Light Decorations With Vacuum Forming | Outdoor Christmas Decorations

  • We wanted to make Gumdrop Light Decorations for our Harbeck Lights Christmas Light Show so we did what any maker would do and build our own gumdrop vacuum forming machine, spent too much money on glitter, cracked our mold, waited for glue to dry and dry and dry, and got amazingly detailed gumdrop lights!
    We show how we made our custom negative vacuum forming setup to form over 60 DIY gumdrops by vacuum forming PETG and then decorating them using copious amounts of glitter and glue! We then used color changing LED pixel strips to control the sequencing of the lights. The glitter does a beautiful job of refracting the light and details in the surface making these a great outdoor Christmas decoration idea.
    We used Fusion 360 to build our 3d models and then 3d printed them out on the Prusa i3mkIII. We then used these forms as our molds/bucks for vacuum forming these translucent decorations.

      righhttt. its so hard to find an accurate gumdrop like shape online or in stores theres some good dome like shapes that you can cut shorter but they cost a lot of money for just one so its not worth buying them.

    Great job! In the first process, it might have worked to release the plastic by blowing compressed under the inner edge.

    Could you share some info on the heat box component of your vacuum forming setup?

    • @HarbeckLights
      @HarbeckLights  Před 3 lety

      Yes for my setup I was trying to keep it as simple as possible so I just used one of those outdoor quartz heaters. I built a little box around it with mdf and then lined the inside with tin foil. The wood box never got hot at all. This setup was easy to store away and did the job well.

    • @zynthesis
      @zynthesis Před 8 měsíci

      @@inspirationalrelaxation6694 Yeah just buy a rgb light bulb pack for like $12 then pendent light extension cords that are for light bulbs. Or you can use RGB push lights with a controller. You can find multi packs for cheap. Use old string lights that don't work as extension cords within your lawn that go from each gumdrop.
