We spent the day at Magnuson Superchargers headquarters just outside of Los Angeles and while there we got the opportunity to get behind the wheel of their supercharged Toyota 4Runner. Jesse from Magnuson came along for the ride as we got a small taste of what these superchargers can do.

That is Jesse Iwuji (the guy in the passenger seat), NASCAR driver, Navy Midshipman, and life saver! He just saved a family of 4 from a minivan on fire! A true patriot!
Haha thank you
Just subscribed to your channel sir
A real Patriot then! I applaud that!
A hero.
Outstanding! Bravo Zulu sir. Enjoy your Naval Career. (NavAir Vet, 80âs).
Do you make a supercharger for the 4th gen 4.0L V6? I have an 03 currently. I may upgrade to an 08 or 09 with V6 or V8 if I can find a good one. Same question for the 4.7L V8. Thanks!
That minute and a half of exterior shots and 10,000 jump cuts was really useful information about the performance of the supercharger.
I'm with you. Local Guide missed the point. It's just plain annoying and the Techno tunes made me want to dig someone's eyes out with my thumbs.
@@VampireDrip My comment was just as easy to skip too. So why didn't you just skip it? Cognitive dissonance much? People that argue you could ignore something are always too stupid to realize their argument is instantly nullified by their own actions in also not ignoring something. It's awesome.

Supercharge 4 Runner ?
TAKE MY MONEY. I feel like Toyota is missing a huge market
Toyota4Life that's what I'm saying! Sign me up!
Karma Nv Iâm not as familiar with the Tacomaâs as much as I am the 4Runners, but any owner with a Tacoma or 4Runner with the 3.4 V6 can add a TRD supercharger. TRD had a 1st and 2nd generation supercharger available. My 3rd gen â00 4Runner has a 2nd gen that was installed at the dealership a few thousand miles after it was first purchased. Just rolled over 275k miles and still running like a champ!
Karma Nv I didnât realize that the Tacomaâs hadnât changed as often as the 4Runner. The 4Runner is currently on the 5th gen! My bad.
Karma Nv This is actually my 2nd, 3rd gen. Had an â02 that got totaled out when a tree fell on the back corner of it. I ended up buying it back from the insurance company and driving it for another year and a half. I ran across my current â00 with the TRD supercharger on craigslist and bought it sight unseen. Had it shipped down to Texas from North Carolina, then sold the â00. Never had a problem with either of them. I just use it as my work truck on beat up, oilfield roads. It just keeps going!
Karma Nv lol, no that wasnât me. I know exactly which 4Runner you are talking about though! I ran across that article on the 4Runner forum. It was actually a limb that totaled mine. It had to have been over 1500 lbs. It hit the rear driver corner, but crazy enough didnât break any glass. It peeled the metal away from the top side of the rear quarter window. The hatch would still operate. I just had an unsightly dent, and a water leak from that window. The insurance company totaled it, stating structural damage. Wish I had a way to upload pics!
I have a blower on my 05 4Runner and it's the best money I've spent on it. About to break 200k on the truck, have about 60k on the blower, zero issues. Gets 19 city, 23 highway, and all of the fun. All of it.
so, you put blower on at 140k miles? thats awesome and its still running good. Did you change plugs to a different heat range or keep em stock?
What blower is it? Looking for one for my 08
Yea
. Which blower?? Do you have on it
The Magnuson salesman was more helpful than driver. That dude has a bright future in sales, fosho.
The only thing I dislike about this 4Runner, is the Audi "Supercharged" badge they stuck on the dashboard. Besides that, it's clean. Magnuson makes a solid blower.
At least its not inaccurate lol
Yeah, that's true lol. Just odd to see an Audi badge inside a Toyota. I also think the overall look of that badge is out of place in the interior of that vehicle. A small "Magnuson Supercharged" vinyl or plaque would look better in my opinion.
There are plenty of supercharged Toyota vehicles, including the TRD supercharged 3rd gen 4Runner they could have taken the badge from.
Which makes the use of this badge even more weird lol.
First thing I thought when the visual came up... âdid I click the wrong video? Thatâs an Audi badgeâ
4Runners are bullet proof trucks. Mine has 225,000 miles and runs strong.
ilovemanunited I have a 96 4 runner with over 320000 miles and still runs awesome and everything still works on it....im sure it'll go past half a million easy!!
imrick jamesbitch yes, all Toyota could go a million miles! There's a 1 million mile Tundra. I also want to get Lexus IS300 from the early 2000s.
ilovemanunited what year is yours?
Marwan Sayegh 1998
ilovemanunited yup 311k on my 98 and still purrs
If Toyota offered this from the factory (like they used to), I would happily pay $5000-7500.
You know Magnuson was the ones who produced the TRD supercharger for Toyota right? Once Toyota stopped the program Magnuson continued making the supercharger. You still get a 3 yr/36,000 mile powertrain warranty and parts warranty from magnuson superchargers. And this supercharger does not void your Toyota warranty. You can get this same supercharger for a 4runner from Magnuson Superchargers: www.magnusonsuperchargers.com/product-p/01-13-40-021-bl.htm
@Joseph Smith citation needed.
No need to...The same company that made them for the 4runner then (Magnuson), makes them now...And if you have a certified Toyota tech install, your warranty is still full and valid...Nothing's really changed in that regard.
The supper charger is like 7k so just buy it, you need half a brain to install its cake!!
â@@locoxti88great sycho sid can do it (wrestling reference) lol
Supercharger whine is the only whining I can and will tolerate in life.
Priceless lmao
Toyota needs to put the 4.7 Liter V8 and put a charger on that....The v8 alone will blow the doors off the 4.0 stock then add that extra blower...
john turley
Lol in your dreams kiddo.
Buy a Lexus gx. Pretty much the same vehicle and gets the 4.6 v8.
KeystoneRider 4.7 v8 i have an 06 gx
buff samurai fred Toyota has since updated the 4.7 and dropped itâs displacement to a 4.6 and got rid of the timing belt and replaced with a timing chain. More reliable and I believe more power too.
KeystoneRider yes i know about that update, with that being said they can throw turbos on it without any issues as long as the boost levels are kept reasonable, 12psi on the 4.6l v8 would make good power in the 300-400hp range to the wheels which is what these truck truly need, as they are already heavy
I wish the 4Runner still comes with the v8 like it used to :(
I still got the v8 itâs so much better
@@mattbrown942 I got myself a tundra so win!
Canât wait to get one. I was talking with my Toyota dealership and you can actually order them through my Dealership from magnuson as a full package deal including install, and they take care of all of the registration paperwork for warranty and certified installation!
Jessie from Magnuson is a true gear head. Owns a C6 Z06, had a turbo Camaro and drives in Pro Am/Professional motorsports competition. And works for Magnuson superchargers for his day job. He's living the life!
I love Toyota 4x4s but the gimmicky intro to this video was almost too much.
i fast forwarded to get past it
Its a stance video millennial thing. Super obnoxious. its the same royalty free generic "trap" beat on every single video. Just type in Stance and you will see what i mean
Amen cut it by like 1/4th please.
I mean, right??
too bad that Magnuson decided to be greedy with the Tundra superchargers and put a profit of 100% instead of the average 50%. They would make more money selling the supercharger friendly priced so the average Joe doesn't have to remortgage his house to get one and obviously have it installed.for an extra fee..just saying
Yeah, I'd get it but not at the current pricing.
Just picked up a 2018 Nautical Blue ORP. I used to have a Raptor so wouldn't mind having a little more power. Will be getting a supercharger soon. Would like to have a twin screw option.
This dudes cool as fuck. You can tell he is passionate about this
I have the unit they developed for TRD on my 2005 Tacoma. It is hands-down the best and highest quality supercharger set up Iâve ever seen. When buying superchargers in the future if Magnuson doesnât make it I wonât buy it.
Still waiting for the tacoma 3rd gen SC....
seriously, they would have been had my monies
Apparently itâs not doable because the 3.5 v6 is an Atkinson cycle engine
Evan Hasson they have already teased the public on their IG multiple times. Itâs in development
Evan Hasson welcome to the Wrong Club!
sorry thats just what I've heard from many source. do you wanna sue me or something?

You can get this same supercharger for a 4runner from Magnuson Superchargers: www.magnusonsuperchargers.com/product-p/01-13-40-021-bl.htm
A lot of people do not know that turbos have lag and superchargers DO NOT have lag, it's real time power on tap. Look up Engineering Explained comparing the two technologies.
TigerKitty 2 a lot of what people? Typically people who know the difference or what forced induction is have a general grasps of the ups and downs of each system
colormesarge heâs talkin about the peopl thatâs not into cars donât know
Sounds like this has potential to make the 4Runner even better for Overlanding.Just enough extra power to make it easier to climb the steep hills while packing the equipment.
Does anyone else hear that pining at 5:29 ? Sounds like detonation.
âItâs not an AMG in here.â Exactly.
Since Gas mileage isnât great to begin with adding the horse power is a win! Iâm putting this on as soon as my warranty runs out. đđŠ
My 2001 4 runner which I have since passed to my brother in law has 330k on her. Solid suv and a cornerstone of the class. PLEASE give one of these away! Iâll be the first to register.
MAKE ONE FOR 2016+ TACOMA V6 6SPD! THANK YOU!

JoMaHa lol I have one and love it but hp is awful
The saying for off-roading, to keep from breaking stuff, is: better to under power and over gear.
It's perfect for off road climbing up over stuff, but does lag a bit on the highway. I feel like the more I take the truck off road the more I appreciate the capabilities of it. I just wish it had more power for my daily commute :)
How does the stock transmission handle the power?
id love this on an off road session.
You can get this same supercharger for a 4runner from Magnuson Superchargers: www.magnusonsuperchargers.com/product-p/01-13-40-021-bl.htm
Jesse Iwuji are you that guy from the video? đ
Still have my 03 4 Runner 4x4 v8. I drive it like I stole it every day. Fucking bullet proof. Cant say that about any other vehicle I've ever owned.
Nice! I always felt my 16' 4Runner could use a little more power. Don't know if I can cough up the $5700 price tag though. I'm thinking it might actually make more power for the 2WD models, assuming this works with the 2WD models right?
Try STP octane booster with 93 premium gas that's what I use in my 2010 4Runner nice follow the Lord Jesus.
+Jason Koertge
Still thinking about it? I know I am, especially when I load up the drawers and fridge in the back, sliders, Alu Can rooftop tent, and front bumper. Wonder if they also sell rockets.
You guys need to get that TRD qual again and have this sold at the dealerships...so that I can get the wife to buy in to having one of these rolled into the loan. 5th Gen 4Runner is my next vehicle, especially if the new 3.5L goes into the 6th gen.
One down side is u must use premium fuel
Is this true? Never mentioned this
I am sure you can get a tune that will utilize less octane but at less HP.
Yes you do. Put one on my 2017 4 Runner. It will ping @ 3500-4000 on 87 octane must run premium and will lose 1 mpg per gallon but it's a tradeoff for the extra power- the 4.0 V6 feels like a normal V8
Bernardus Jones Worth it..!
@@zerokool-2058 I think so, didn't lose any fuel economy, feels like a V-8
I ordered one! Finally a reliable brand building quality products. Canât wait
Jesse makes the video...gorgeous smile! I will take a SC now thank you!
I tend to take this with a grain of salt considering the person who is suppose to know everything about it said the 4Runner had a sport mode.... it does absolutely nothing. The S stands for sequential. It sets the max gear the truck will go to.
You need to be schooled yourself. S does NOT stand for sequential, and with all the knowledge this guy has to keep up with, you have NO room to talk....Need way more than a grain of salt here.......
I put a blower in my 2021 4runner and although it's generally a positive experience, I feel she can never make up her mind about what to eat for dinner.
This, once i hit about 50k i need one. Will be like buying a whole new car. Honestly though i pull a lot with the mama tank and this power boost would be WELL welcomed even towing 3/4k
I need it for my 4Runner đ
always curious about the wear and tear on the engine and transmission with this set up
Pretty Minimal
Drop the price to $4000. And youâll see a 6 month backorder. $5600. is no bueno
Superchargers are not cheap to make, if you google search what superchargers cost at Whipple, Edelbrock, Procharger, etc its not cheap.
Cheaper
skankhunt42 heeey buddy! My bday is next week!
Pay to play...Funny, I never see anyone willing to drop their INCOME so that we could have things cheaper.
Great supercharger. What if any mods/changes are made to the transmission? I.e. tighter shifts etc.
Love the Audi badge on the dash. Have one of those on my S4. đ
Jesse's smile tells the whole story...
Thank you making this!! Lots of chat on T4R and Toyota120 but nobody has put a good video together about this supercharger.
âThat was legitness!â
This is pretty dope đ„
Is there a difference in mpg with the supercharger?
I just want to know if thereâs anything else I would have to do? Because Iâm not sure if it would wear out the engine or transmission.
...still waiting for 3rd gen tacoma supercharger
As soon as one hits for the 2016 Taco. Imma throw all my money at it.
Great video!!! It looks like MAGNUSON has made a perfect supercharger application for TOYOTA 4RUNNERS!!! I currently own a 2012 TOYOTA 4RUNNER LIMITED with only 26000 miles and have been considering to possibly put one of these superchargers in it!!! For more HP power gain of course and most importantly for heavy cargo towing inside my 4RUNNER!!! Considering that I will be caring about 800Ibs to1000Ibs of car audio equipment in my rear cargo area on a daily basis I believe that a
MAGNUSON SUPERCHARGER might be the best way to go to compensate for all that weight I will be caring around!!! It will be everything from amps, sub's, to car audio deep cell batteries so hopefully this is the right way to go!!! I'm open for any other suggestions and they would surely be appreciated thank you!!! Once again great video!!!! đđđ
Wonder how much it would be for this supercharger for my 4runner and getting it installed
shout out to that Fozzy at 6:17
Did they take the supercharged badge from a Audi. looks just like it.
It's a Swiss army knife 4x4 SUV. Get the TRD PRO with the Fox shocks.
Stats and numbers less talking and I know what a 4runner looks like please!
If all you want is stats and numbers, you don't need CZcams---just go online and get your "text" fix.
this would be great to do whenever the original motor needs to be rebuilt, but since its a Toyota that might be a long time
I really love the idea of adding more HP to the 4Runner, but Iâve always read the reliability will tank. Is that true?
mike wellington if I had to guess, the engine wonât last as long compared to the just leaving it stock. But as long as the tune is solid and well done, it should still last a long time.
Edit: Forgot the part about tuning
rupasree bose appreciate that, thanks
Reliability will not tank, there are people with 150,000+ miles on their supercharger with their vehicles, not these ones yet, but other vehicles
mike wellington Usually people who lack experience say that. There are a lot of upgrades for all year 4runners.
colormesarge how do you mean? Iâm a but confused
Tuff trucc got some extra muscle under the hood
If you donât use 91 premium gas âœïž just like 87 regular octane will there be a mechanical problem?
I need one for my taco pro 2017 cement colored bad ass truck !!
6:42 7 seconds from 0 to 60!?
Awesome info and Jessie is a fantastic spokesperson
What about the rear axles and driveline when actually off roading? For example, running it in the dunes at Glamis, CA. Not through whoops but simply just driving it through the sand and up the hills. How much more does this add to the strain on your driveline components?
I think a cold air intake, headers, and a cat back exhaust would help make the most out of the supercharger. What does the Magnuson supercharger cost? I think the old TRD pro charger used to sell for around $5k.
A cold air intake, headers, and exhaust even with w tune will only give you about 20 HP. And without a tune it will give you absolutely nothing. TRD superchargers were made by Magnuson if you didn't know.
I didn't know that. I went to the Magnuson website and it says that intake/headers/exhaust are not recommended with the supercharger but probably won't hurt anything.
Could you find out if they have kits or plan to build kits for a 1uz-fe?
We just Purchased a 2021 4Runner Limited. Living in Colorado @ 7000 ft above sea level and travel up to 14,000 ft above sea level, the v6 is frankly a rocket with chains on. Low torque, Low horsepower, terrible fuel economy.
We need a SuperCharger with a huge liquid cooler, and a custom tune.
From daily driving, to heavy towing to off roading in high altitude we are looking for a solution that also improves fuel economy.
Our 2005 4Runner had the v8 with superior power, torque and fuel economy. đđ
Itâs embarrassing that we canât keep up with our friends on any level in any venue when before we were the âking of the hillâ with our 2005 4Runner v8 , now âlimited to the bunny slopes.â with the pathetic V6 with low torque, horsepower, and awful fuel economy. @ $52,000 ouch.

HELP
Any idea how this affects Toyota's warranty?
What's up with the TPMS light?...Also, we need a supercharger for the 4th Gen V6's
Neil Watson if you bought a 4th gen v8 you wouldn't need one
Wow had no idea they used to make parts and the actual supercharger for toyota back in the day. Iâm still waiting for this latest generation of Tacomaâs supercharger
Sign me up but is it affordable? And does it make the 4 runner worse for gas mileage than what it already is ?
Please don't ever change ur outro theme song, it's really lit
Will it pass smog ? How much will cost to install in a 2021 4Runner limited?
The supercharge is for 1gr-fe engine 4.0l, what about 2gr-fe 3.5l would this fit? Toyota aurion in Australia is a 3.5l 2gr-fe with TRD supercharger. would this fit other vehicle with same engine code 2010 and present?
Can this be added on any year or make of the 4runner? And how much more gas will this eat
Not really. This is a truck and meant for off road. People fall victim to trends and bro science. Toyota once offered super charged from Trd. But they no longer supported them due to relibilty issues. Engines were blowing up due to faulty set ups and peripheral parts routinely failed. For no reason other than the vehicle not being designed for a high boost pressure set up. This is a very realiable off reader that comes stock ready to go anywhere. It doesn't need more power or torque, nor does it need that ridiculous 8 speed transmission. Toyota spent millions in research and engineering and have the 4.0 with the 5 speed for a reason. Enjoy the vehicle for what it was built for and not make it into something it's not.
News that matter I had two 4Runners with the TRD supercharger, headers, and exhaust and put over 200k on both with ZERO issues! Got a buddy 390k on a 4Runner with the same set up and ZERO issues! 4runners are heavy and slow and the boost is a huge improvement especially at altitude in Colorado. My real world experience is the exact opposite of your comment.
@@carbonking53 do you have videos of your trucks?? Im extremely curious to see how these runners faired. I own two 5th gen 4runners my self and I've never had any issues with power. The weak link to be honest isn'tthe engines. It was the 5 speed tranny that always want to shift higher in efforts to save gas. I go sequential mode and it becomes a powerful truck. I'll typically set it to 2nd use up the rpms and allow it to shift higher, once I'm caught up, if traffic is moving fast.. don't have experiance with the super chargers, other than what is general consensus and what toyota told me directly. I'm sure they're are factors to consider. Maybe people weren't installing them correctly, playing with the settings, doing more than what's recommend.
You do realize when Toyota first started offering the TRD blowers they would actually cover them under warranty if installed at the dealer? Sounds like Toyota was quite confident in the reliability.
@@NuclearSandwich7 I have one on my '98 Limited. Its only got 64,000 original miles. The tranny on these are the drawback after installing the SC. The valve body needs upgraded due to slow shifts.
Daniel Fair I donât doubt that at all. Regardless the setup is quite reliable. Especially in a manual transmission application.
TRD blower without the dealership headache. Toyota used to sell these and warranty them no issues. Im interested in what the 'tuner kit' option on the website for this is... Smaller pulley and recalibration? It as a small print link at the bottom and says contact us for further info.

What does it feel like in comparison to the 4.7 4runner? I like the new style but I did not want to give up my v8.
Can you use an k&n cold air intake with the supercharger..I have a 2014 sr5 4runner
How would it sound with a snorkel?
To much tire noise inside. How can you fix that in a vehicle ? Is it possible??
Skid plates on the undercarriage & remove the seats and carpeting to install sound deadening mat material. Doors too
It does make you question whether this is a good idea or not because Toyota stopped selling and installing the TRD supercharger in dealerships.
Will the instant added power on tap, will it make it sketchy for winter driving??
This is tempting, but does it still last to 400k miles?
But why is the supercharged badge by audi
Question â after adding this supercharger...
Do you need to use a Super Unleaded Gas now? Or is regular Unleaded still fine to use.
Supercharger requires at least 91 octane fuel, and thereâs no getting around it. âïžđšđŠ
It made 250whp stock? Gd it only lost like 10% through the drivetrain
Essence of Racing 278 hp and 270 ibs pounds of torque
I wish they still made the TRD V8 Superchargers... it's so sad. Impossible to find one!
They do, Magnuson makes it. Magnuson was the producer of the TRD supercharger, it was a magnuson supercharger with a TRD name on it
Jesse Iwuji I've called Magnuson its discontioned and have not had any for a long time
Jesse Iwuji if you didn't see I said I wish they STILL made them. Sadly not anymore
Not for the 4.7 V8 but they make one for the 5.7 in the Tundra/Sequoia/Land Cruiser. I wish they made one for the 4.6, make the GX460 a beast.
Please do a mighty car mods crossover episode. It would be amazing. You could drive the mira, the vtec mini or even supergramps
See this system here? It's high fi, high fidelity, what that means is that it's the highest quality fidelity
Nice ECO light after the WOT pull HAHAHA
This is super cool but most toyotas benefit from lower gears before anything else. Tacos especially but it applies to 4 runners too.
Elephant in the room:It's gonna run you 6k.
Everything costs...You can either afford it now, or you can't---no elephant necessary.
I have that EXACT 4runner. just grey. And now....I need to buy one. lol this is 4runner PORN right here!!! hahahha!
When can we get a 2021 SC kit?
Did the rep just say at the 4 minute and 18 seconds mark that they made a blower for the 3. 5 L Tacoma
Trust me, I want this a lot but like, adding speed to a vehicle thatâs already boxy with a high center of gravity? What am I missing why would someone do this? Just for speed or fun or?? Convince me đ
Well a track hawk is a boxy ass suv, why not a 4Runner đ
Because the era of fast 4x4's is here. A boosted 4Runner is fun as heck! Make sure to get the OTT Tune for even more kick!
Since this supercharger fits the 5th gen, will it fit the 1gr-fe in a 05 4th gen??
